    Abstract
Contribution to a thematic issue devoted to subject control in on-line catalogues. Keyword searching with Boolean operators was impossible in the traditional on-line catalogue and its promised benefits in on-line systems are not yet clear. Reports on a survey undertaken at Brigham Young University library, Utah, which investigated this issue when the library was selected as a test site for keyword searching in the NOTIS on-line catalogue. Results of the survey were mixed. While keyword searching will require increased computer capacity for unstricted use, students, though content with the new tool, are not adept at using its sophisticated features and will require much more training than for the basic NOTIS on-line catalogue.

    Abstract
2nd of two articles based on the results of a survey of on-line public access catalogues (OPACs) in public libraries carried out by Manchester Library School. 20 UK libraries provided data for the survey. Discusses types of OPAC configurations in use, suppliers of systems, help facilities, display of data, and subject searching on OPACs. Concludes that, in general, OPACs make accessing a catalogue easy and that this encourages catalogue use, resulting in increased document demand levels and in more satisfied customers.

    Abstract
The paper will discuss the following points: What do we mean by a 'good' catalogue, which requirements to the database design must be satisfied for the system to act as a good catalogue, which types of database management system should we use, can a catalogue be distributed on several computers and how will this influenece the performance, availability, maintenance, etc., how does a 'union' catalogue consusting of several independant catalogues on different computers act as 'a' catalogue?

    Abstract
The growing interest in end user or direct patron access to on-line bibliographic databases is reviewed with references to online catalogues, databases, and CD-ROMs. The literature of end user searching is surveyed with notes on: user training, software search aids, end user services in libraries: characterisation of end user searches; the role of librarians; and CD-ROMs as end user media

    Abstract
Contribution to a thematic issue devoted to subject control in on-line catalogues. In contrast with data base searching, the use of an OPAC is direct, without intermediaries and without prior training. This tool allows decentralised information access, 1st in the library and now directly from users' homes. In France MINITEL has made distributed access possible. Outlines the French authority list, RAMEAU (Répertoire d'Autorité Matière Encyclopédique et Alphabétique Unifié) giving details or its users and describes searching the system and the search software, ALEXIS. ALEXIS can serve as an example of the direction to take since it was developed within the perspective of natural language queries.

    Abstract
A research project at Middlesex Polytechnic is examning the problems of subject access in an OPAC. A series of user studies have been carried out which examined students' use of existing catalogue facilities, which in turn led to the experimental evaluation of various interface designs for an online catalogue. The experiments were primarily concerned with the effect of the following variables on the speed and accuracy of retrieval of specific items, the use of colour, the speed of presentation of information, the amount of information on a screen, the paging and scrolling of information, the position of a sought item within a list

    Abstract
LIAS, the Pennsylvania State University's (Penn State) integrated interactive online system, provides for messaging by the user to inform library staff of errors found in bibliographic records. The message is sent by use of the OOPS command, and results in a printout which is used by processing staff for online catalog maintenance. This article describes LIAS, the use of the OOPS command, the processing of the resulting OOPS reports, an assessment of the effect of its use, and some speculation on the expansion of the LIAS message system for use in catalog maintenance.

    Abstract
Research in user behavior on online catalogs is in its early stages, but preliminary findings suggest that users encounter many of the same problems identified in behavioral studies of other types of bibliographic retrieval systems. Much can be learned from comparing the results of user behavior studies on these two types of systems. Research on user problems with both the mechanical aspects and the conceptual aspects of system use is reviewed, with the conclusion that more similiratiy exists across types of systems in conceptual than in mechanical problems. Also discussed are potential sources of the problems, due either to individual characteristics or to system variables. A series of research questions is proposed and a number of potential interim solutions ae suggested for alleviating some of the problems encountered by users of information systems

    Abstract
Browsing refers to information retrieval where the initial search criteris are generally quite vague. The fundamentals of browsing are explored as a basis for the creation of an intelligent computer system to assist with the retrieval of online information. Browsing actions via a computer terminal are examined, together with new methods of accessing text and satisfying user queries. Initial tests with a prototype system illustrated the use of different retrieval strategies when accessing online information of varying structure. The results suggest the construction of a more intelligent processing component to provide expanded capabiblities for content extrction and navigation within text documents

    Abstract
Traditional subject cataloguing hampers subject retrieval in central catalogues, because of the lack of a common indexing and retrieval language in these catalogues. This study investigates the possibilities to use the various individual subject access systems, present in the catalogues, for subject access. A search procedure based on 'citation pearl growing' and 'user relevance feedback', which can be applied in a public access interface to central data bases, has been developed. From an experiment it can be concluded, that automated expert assistance, provided with a search strategy, will improve search response for unexperienced searchers. It reduces the number of zero-hits and increases the number of relevant items retrieved

    Abstract
Research on the use of online catalogs has challenged many assumptions about the behavior of library users. It has demonstrated that many of the patterns of behavior observed in the use of card catalogs were adaptions to the card technology; often behavioral patterns are different in an online environment. These studies have indicated that patrons prefer online catalogs and use them more, but they also show inadequacies in bibliographic practice, especially in the area of subject access.
