    "Scheint derzeit das Konzept von Bibliothekskatalogen auf dem 'Weg zu sein, bis zur Unkenntlichkeit mit dem Universum weltweiter Informationsnetze und Fachdatenbanken zu verschmelzen, so ist zu fragen, ob nicht angesichts immer bequemeren Zugriffs auf das Ferne und Spezielle die Besinnung auf Qaulitäten dieses 'Vorfeldes' nottut. Oder sind sachliche Suche in deutscher Sprache, interdisziplinäre Ausrichtung, komfortabler Einstieg in ein Thema, Orientierung am lokalen Bestand als Kriterium der Literaturerschließung bereits überholt? Zurückgreifend auf die These, daß es im Online-Katalog einen Kernbestand qualitativer Erschließung mit Indexaten geben soll, der - bei stets möglichem Ausgreifen auf Volltext- und Freitextretrieval - durch 'Auswahl' Klarheit und Überschaubarkeit in der Flut atomisierte Informationen sichert, könnten in dieser mit höherem intellektuellen Aufwand gepflegten Datenschicht dann auch lokale Bestände und Besonderheiten zur Geltung kommen

    Abstract
    Katalogisierung über den Rechner bedeutet immer auch, einen OPAC aufzubauen, der es erlaubt, nach unterschiedlichen Merkmalen - formal und sachlich - und mit deren Kombination zu recherchieren. Die Freiwortrecherche wird von den Benutzern gern verwendet, obwohl dabei die Recall Ration (Vollständigkeit) nicht ausgeschöpft wird. Die Nutzung von Schlagwörtern sollte deren Standardisierung in einer Normdatei voraussetzen, um den Subjektivismus der Katalogisierer auszuschalten. Schlagwortketten sind prinzipiell für einen OPAC überflüssig. Bei Verwendung einer hierarchischen, d.h. systematischen Klassifikation sollte deren Notation systemkohärent, flexibel und synthetisch (Facetten bzw. Schlüssel) sein. Mit Hilfe von Registern sind Schlagwörter und Systemnotationen vice versa zu verknüpfen. Wenn Sachkatalogisierung im Verbund erfolgt, bilden Terminologiekontrolle und Einheitsklassifikation als Grobsysteme wichtige Desiderate

    Ein Vorteil bibliothekarische Online-Kataloge gegenüber konventionellen Katalogen ist die Möglichkeit der Suche nach Stichworten. Stichwortsuchen sind kein originäres Instrument der Sachrecherche und können diese nicht ersetzen. Dieser ist Teil des Integrierten Literatur-, Tonträger- und Musikalieninformationssystems (ILTIS), das auf der Basis der PICA-Software in Der Deutschen Bibliothek eingesetzt wird.     Abstract
    Rekapituliert aus Ergebnissen der OOPAC-Nutzerforschung werden einige wesentliche Schwierigkeiten, die Endnutzer bei der Literaturrecherche in OPACs haben, und erklärt werden einige softwareseitige Maßnahmen zur fehlertoleranten OPAC-Gestaltung. Schwierigkeiten bei der OPAC-Nutzung sind: keine Treffer (kein recall), zu viele Treffer (Ballast), Orientierungslosigkeit, unverständliche Optionen, ungenügende Daten für Relevanzbeurteilung, Überschätzung des Datenbankinhaltes, unwirksame Hilfestellung. Einige in deutschen OPACs noch nicht implementierte Maßnahmen mit fehlertoleranter Auswirkung sind: automatische Wortformenreduktion, automatische Rechtschreibkorrektur, relevance ranking, Relevanzrückmeldung und Recherche mit Koindexaten
