    Abstract
    Library OPACs have long been the gateways between users and information. They present to users the achievements of library automation, and are the most widely available automated retrieval systems and the first that many user encounter. Current trends in OPAC design are toward a user oriented, individual information service which can meet the different needs of users with a variety of background and interests. Compared with the rather inactive, short term and general information service of conventional systems, this type of system focuses on active, long term and personalized service.     Abstract
    Describes the work carried out at Oklahoma State University to develop a means of editing and customizing the information screens provided with the NOTIS Library Management System, employing the WordPerfect word processing package and the Windows operating system. The capture capability of Windows was used to copy blocks of text screens from the NOTIS Library Management System into WordPerfect, where they could be easily edited and spell checked. Once each screen was ready, it was again captured using Windows and loaded into the NOTIS system at the appropriate location. The procedure was found to enhance greatly the editorial capability for the information screens available with the Library Online Catalog

    The Venice University Institute of Architecture has developed Easyweb, a software package to integrate its heterogeneous non-compatible bibliographic and multimedia databases, standardise access and create internal links, by transferring all existing OPAC applications to the Web. Features include importation of UNIMARC data, multiple window searching, multibase searching and special applications, e.g. circulation management. Easyweb is notable user friendly and has become the point of reference for OPACs in Italy

    Abstract
    Difficulties with 'wayfinding' are common among users of electronic information systems. A study of strategies (textual, graphic, colour) for cuing users to their location in a data base showed that the presence or absence of physical cues was less important to successful searching than the user's abibiliy to represent internally the structure of the information. Users with more detailed and complete impressions of the data base searched faster. But the variety of different representations of the data base suggest it may be very difficult to create generic models as help to novice users

    Abstract
    An investigation of tools, techniques, and methods for the evaluation of interactive library catalogues is described, with emphasis on diagnostic methods and on use of the catalogue in a wider context of user information seeking behaviour. A front-end system (Olive) was developed to test verious enhancements of traditional transaction logging as a data-gathering technique for evaluation purposes. These include full-screen logging, pre- and post-search, online/offline, and in-search interactive questionnaires, search replys as well as talk-aloud. The extent of subject or hybrid searching activity as opposed to specific item searching is also highlighted

    Abstract
    Research on the use of online catalogues reveals that information retrieval by subject is the most common form, but the least successful. Most problems are attributed to users' search terms, which are either to broad or too specific. Presents an Intelligent Negotiating Neural Network (INN) design model for solving this aspect of online catalogues. The network is designed to act as as electronic information specialist capable of learning to negotiate a user's query and translate it into a true, well formulate statement prior to accessing an online catalogue. The network's architecture includes 4 dimensions: conceptual graphs for queries, inheritance and recognition, knowledge base, and modules. This architecture corresponds to four elements of the traditional query negotiation interview performed by information specialists. These are: query/concept; types of sources/answer-providing tools; types of literature; and time frame. 3 different sessions of the user interface are presented: negotiation of a broadly stae query; negotiation of a norrowly stae query; and negotiation of a query for which concepts are nonexistent in the knowledge base

    Abstract
    This article first compares and contrasts the essential, fundamental differences between traditional and digital information mediums. It then reexamines the role of the online public access catalog (OPAC), refines the definition of library's catalog, and advocates the addition of Internet resources within the OPAC. Next, the article describes the building of the Alex Catalog, a catalog of Internet resources in the in the form of MARC records. Finally, this article outlines a process of integrating the futher inclusion of other Internet resources into OPACs as well as some of the obstacles such a process manifests.

    Introducess a new approach to display retrieved subject headings in subject searching designed to encourage users to browse bibliographic information.
