    Abstract
Covers the process of downloading from an On-line Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) to an MS-DOS microcomputer. Describes the purpose of downloading, steps to achieve this an postprocessing the captured data to produce a report using wordprocessors or text oriented programming languages. Offers advice on importing to applications software. Suggests that the OPAC community needs a universal MARC reformatting program

    Abstract
The Venice University Institute of Architecture has developed Easyweb, a software package to integrate its heterogeneous non-compatible bibliographic and multimedia databases, standardise access and create internal links, by transferring all existing OPAC applications to the Web. Features include importation of UNIMARC data, multiple window searching, multibase searching and special applications, e.g. circulation management. Easyweb is notable user friendly and has become the point of reference for OPACs in Italy

    Abstract
The UK's National Art Library at the Victoria & Albert Museum joined the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) in 1986 and from 1987 to 1990 created catalogue records in MARC format on the OCLC database pending the introduction of a stand-alone computer system. the library now employs a Dynix microcomputer system for cataloguing, acquisitions, circulation, serials control, community information and the provision of online public access catalogues (OPAC). Describes library records currently available online, progress in retrospective conversion, internal networking and plans for external networking via the Joint Academic Network (JANET), and the provision of bibliographic and image databases in CD-ROM and videodisc format. Future developments will include interface between museum/image and library/documentation databases

    Abstract
Within the SOKRATES project Bavarian state, university and regional libraries are being equipped with locally automated systems. Regensburg university library has piloted the SISIS-OPAC-ONL version 1.0, adapted from the SINIX-based software SISIS-SE, with a machine readable stock of 1,66 million titles. OPAC-ONL offers 3 retrieval functions of different grades. Tests have been approved by Bavarian state libraries provided that certain faults are rectified statewide use of the OPAC should follow

    Abstract
Reports the results of a questionnaire survey of 414 libraries in 4 categories: academic libraries; school libraries; public libraries and special libraries; to assess the status of library training initiatives with respect to the libraries' OPACs. Answers were sought to 3 questions: how have libraries modifoed OPAC software; have libraries developed any instructional methods for teaching the use of OPACs; and to what extent are online catalogues self instructional? Results show that most participants' libraries have modofied library OPAC software; librarians continue to teach use of the online catalogue, depending heavily on handouts; few systems have built-in tutorials for users; and very fes have developed computer assisted instruction for the OPAC

    Abstract
Paper presented at the 14th biennal conf. of IATUL, Cambridge, Mass., USA, 8.-12.7.1991: new technologies and information services - evolution or revolution? Ed.: Jay K. Lucker and published by the British Library on behalf of IATUL. The provision of enhanced subject access and access to a wider variety of bibliographic resources for library users have been influenced by technology. This has occured throuigh advances in workstations, storage media, graphics, networks and search engines such as BRS/SEARCH. Presents the results of a study by the Council of Library Resources on online catalogues. Discusses access to the periodical literature, library workstations, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign library's microcomputer workstation, the OKAPI search system for online catalogues and the Scottish Academic Libraries Bibliographic Information Network

    Abstract
In order to evaluate the features and functionality of the online help system for the NOTIS (version 5.1) OPAC. a set of performance enhancing features were gathered from a review of research studies of online help systems, 25 features were identified and organized into 4 categories: user training, interface; access to system commands; and massage content and display. The evaluation revealed that the NOTIS online help system fared poorly in user training features, fared well in user interface; was substandard in access to system commands, and moderately well in message content and display. Concludes that the NOTIS help system is probably no better and no worse than that of other library systems but is adequate

    Abstract
First experiences with OCLC's LS/2000 on-line public access catalogues (OPAC), at Newcastle upon Tyne University Library have been reported (see Program 20(1986) no.2, S.151-163). Presents a brief account of the different modes of help available to users of LS/2000 and the Network OPAC (developed by Cambridge University Library using its CATS software), and statistics about the use of these 2 systems

    Abstract
Describes a study that examined the instances and causes of problems with keyword subject searching of journal citation databases. The researchers employed 3 methods, and in so doing, tested their viability in developing a cohesive record of user searching activities and attitudes: transaction log analysis, survey questionnaire, and protocol analysis. Two types of recommendations emanate from this research: suggestions for practical enhancements to interface software design; and a new methodological approach to the study of user searching behaviour in online systems

    Abstract
The study of subject access to UK academic library catalogues was based on a questionnaires end out during Summer 1991. 86 out of a possible 110 questionnaires were returned. All universities and polytechniques now have OPACs which are progressing well towards comprehensive bibliographical coverage of their libraries' stocks. The MARC format is now widely used. Subject access strategies are usually based on either Library of Congress Subject Headings or inhouse indexing systems but almost half the OPACs studies have no separate subject searching option based on subject indexing is expensive and future subject indexing strategies are best based on pre-existing controlled vocabularies. Strategies authority control is essential. A limited range of software strategies is recommended including the need to limit search results

    Abstract
Rules regarding cataloguing, subject headings, the way information in bibliographic records is organised and the catalogue's interface, or the way the screen is set up, are barriers to the use of online catalogues by children Describes the background to and implementation of a project to create a child orientation catalogue with a graphical user interface, or one that relies on pictures instead of text, within Denver Public Library in Colorado. Now called the Kid's catalog and commercially available from the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries Co., the catalogue's software acts as a front end to a library's regular catalogue

    Abstract
One of the most common errors in cataloguing library materials involves miscoding of the nonfiling indicator of title fields. Notes the extent of the problem and its negative effect on searching in the library's online catalogue and surveys how librarians have approached solutions to the problems. Describes how the major library automation system address this problem
