    Abstract
Presents a study questioning catalogue users at Emporia State Univ. about their experiences and their evaluation of NOTIS in order to access how patrons felt about the catalogue and how well they used it. The study focused on the instruction offered by 59 randomly selected NOTIS libraries. Responses were solicited concerning the university or college, the library, and training methods for OPAC users. With the information gained through both parts, the library instruction program and information regarding NOTIS at White Library could be evaluated and modified

    Abstract
Reviews the literature of designing screens (interfaces) in displays for terminals accessing OPACs. Gathers from scattered and specialised sources the basic principles so that librarians at all levels can approach the screen design process with confidence. Discusses the physical screen and general principles; menus, commands, inquiry screens, and messages; and finally, organisational considerations

    Abstract
Suggests that many problems encountered by students when using online cataloguers arise from a basic unfamiliarity with record structure and its impact on electronic searching. To illustrate the contention that catalogue instruction should begin with an examination and discussion of MARC records, describes a MARC based presentation delivered during freshman orientation at St. Olaf College, Minnesota. Also includes the sample MARC record and script followed by the instructional librarian

    Abstract
Analytical references are needed in online library catalogues in order to provide volume specific author and title access to volumes in monographic series that have been catalogues as periodicals. Demonstrates how Oregon Health Science University Library has used the MARC bibliographic format to provide a record consisting almost entirely of indexed access points, in essence, many cross references assembled into one record, all pointing to a serial. Further proposes that AACR2 rules 13.2A and 21.30M1 be extended to prescribe analytical added entries as well as analytical references

    Abstract
Determines whether iconic interfaces might work with online public access catalogues (OPACs) and assesses problems which students encounter in using icons. Students from the Uk and France were asked to identify IBM, Mac and hand drawn icons and guess their functions. Mac icons were the easiest to identify and hand drawn icons were the least easy to identify. A number of students failed to guess the icon function second time round. Results suggest that an icon based OPAC interface could be polpular, but would require careful design, particularly for a multilingual interface

    Abstract
Current user interfaces for textual database searching leave much to be desired: individually, they are often confusing, and as a group, they are seriously inconsistent. We propose a four- phase framework for user-interface design: the framework provides common structure and terminology for searching while preserving the distinct features of individual collections and search mechanisms. Users will benefit from faster learning, increased comprehension, and better control, leading to more effective searches and higher satisfaction.

    Abstract

    Abstract
Examines 3 aspects of keyword searching to see if defaulting to keyword searches might serve as a solution to the problems users find when performing subject searches in OPACs. Investigates if keyword searching produces useful results; if people who use keyword searches to find information on a subject report that they are satisfied with the results; and how keyword searching and controlled vocabulary searching are offered and explained in currently available OPAC interfaces. Concludes that both keyword and controlled vocabulary searching ought to be easily available in an OPAC, and that improvements need to be made in explanation and help offered to subject searchers

    Abstract
Suggests that an appropriate approach in comparing online and card catalogues is to compare the 2 in relation to the processes in which bibliographic records are created (the input stage), manipulated (the storage stage) and retrieved (the output stage). Studies the concepts underlying these processes and reveals major differences between online and card catalogues. These differences are multiplied and widened when moving from input to output to such an extent that online catalogues can be considered as a significant departure from manual catalogues. The redesign for use in an online environment of bibliographical standards which are based on the card catalogue should be based on conceptual as well as practical differences between the online and card catalogues

    Abstract
Amstelveen Public Library in the Netherlands introduced the online Kid's Catalog in 1997 to enable young users to access the library's catalogue. The system was developed in the United States and has been translated into Dutch for use in Amstelveen. The system enables users to access the catalogue through a menu of icons or by typing in author, title and subject headings. The system can recognise typing errors and offer corrected headings. The system is extremely popular both with children and adults

    Abstract
Advances in computer and communication technology technology have had an important impact on OPACs. The client server architecture model, the Internet, protocols, and standards such as Z39.50 have resulted in newly designed interfaces which reduce syntactic and semantic knowledge required to conduct effective online searches. Experimental OPACs have been developed in an attempt to assist users in conceptual transformation of their information needs into searchable queries. These experiments are based primarily on determining users' behaviour at the OPAC terminal, which needs much further study. Other non traditional models for storing and retrieving information should be considered to create an intuitive OPAC

    Abstract
Information access in Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Libraries', New York, InfoTrax has increased from its formation as an electronic catalogue in 1984 to its current status of campus wide information system. This has been accomplished by including additional library materials, campus files, and outside data bases. Integration between data bases gives patrons access to call number and serials check-in information without having to switch files. An electronic request service allows patrons to hold, photocopy or interloan materials from their terminals
