- Abstract
- Describes a project designed to integrate art into the children's library at Espergaerde in Denmark. Explains the aims of the project, principally to make the use of the library an artistic experience, and the 3 tasks the project was to fulfil: the redesign of the interior using artwork by local artists; a change from the traditional arrangement of fiction; and provision of workshop facilities for children to exercise their artistic inclinations. Details how these tasks were accopmplished and discusses the results of the project, stressing the renewed appreciation of art and the importance of passing that on to children

- Abstract
- The broadside ballads collections at Oxford University's Bodleian Library comprise over 30,000 titles and are an important resource for researchers in popular literature between the 16th and 19th centuries. The creation of a digital database of the ballads has presented the challenge of cataloguing and indexing a large collection of documents containing both textual and visual material. Discusses issues surrounding the subject indexing using ICONCLASS of the woodcut illustrations of the ballads, including: differences between the cataloguing and indexing of images and of texts; how the indexing of visual and textual material should be integrated; how successful is ICONCLASS in establishing communication between the indexer and the user; and what is the appropriate interface for a large collection of items with a wide variety of potential users

- Investigates what effect the shelf classification of fiction had on the way that library users in the 2 branch libraries of Kajanni, Finland, use the library's stock of fiction and how they loan fiction. In 1 library the fiction stock was divided in 11 shelf categories, based on genres of fiction - in the other no changes were made. The books were also indexed and classified in the library's database. The project lasted for 3 years and the results were gathered by interviewing clients and making statistical analysis on loans in both libraries

- Considers the recent trend towards the promotion, by public libraries, of literary fiction with particular reference to a new fiction initiative by the British Library which seeks to redress the imbalance between the level of access provided for fiction and non fiction in library catalogues. - Abstract
- Considers the theoretical questions involved in the indexing of fiction from several viewpoints: general principles of fiction indexing, and the making of book indexes for novels and other fictional works. Describes the work undertaken to develop fiction thesauri with particular reference to work done in Scandinavia, notably in the development of Kaunokki: the Finnish Thesaurus for Fiction, by Helsinki University Library and BTJ Group Ltd. Briefly presents notes on the structure of Kaunokkis with some examples of its practical use and user feedback from several years' experience of its use in Finnish public libraries. Concludes that the widest field for additional studies would be in the building up of special information systems for fiction.

The project, which has been in existence since 1991, involves adding subject headings to catalogue records on the OCLC union catalogue for individual works of fiction. - Abstract
- Following up themes in an article in a previous issue of this journal on the trend amongst public libraries in recent years to run literature promotions to foster greater exploitation of their collections of fiction, focuses on the contribution of the catalogue to the activity of promotion. Suggests there is plenty of evidence to suggest that traditional access provided by the catalogue is failing to meet a need for subject based access to fiction. A new fiction indexing initiative by the British Library seeks to redress the balance between the level of access provided for fiction and non fiction in library catalogues. From Jan 1997 BNB catalogue records for fiction have been indexed using the LCSH in conjunction with a range of genre headings derived from the American Library Association's 'Guidelines on Subject Access to Individual Works of Fiction, Drama etc. (GSAFD). The guidelines recommend indexing fiction to provide for 4 kinds of access: by form/genre; characters; setting; and topic. Discusses the principles and usefulness of this approach with the help of some difficult to categorise examples

Reviews the literature on subject-and -genre access to fiction. Describes a preliminary study in providing enhanced catalogue access to fiction and compares its findings with a similar study conducted by the Subject Cataloguing Division of the Library of Congress

- Reports results of a study to determine the feasibility of routine subject cataloguing of fiction and drama and whether the information provided by dust jacket copy or back of the book copy on paperback books provides enough information to apply LCSH to fictional works using the Guidelines of the Subcommittee on Subject Access to Individual Works of Fiction, Drama etc. of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services, ALA, and how many headings of each type outlined in the Guidelines would typically by assigned using dust jacket copy. Such sources usually provide sufficient information to apply subject headings

- EDVIN is a subject term and genre database for fiction and biographies, for use by librarians as well as by library users, based on many years of experience of what library users actually ask for, i.e. novels on a given subject, a novel similar to or as good as the one they have just read, or the title of a book on the basis of only vague recollections. The product is not a thesaurus constructed according to a previously determined model, but a register of subject terms developed according to the a posteriori method and in close cooperation with the public
