- Abstract
- Knowledge organization (KO) research has been traditionally more oriented toward scientific documents. However, narrative, one of the oldest kinds of literature genre, is increasingly important in the multimedia culture of today, and is getting more important in applied social sciences as business administration, advertising, public relations, politics or education. This paper explores the key facets for KO in the field building on literature theory and faceted classification theory.

- Abstract
- The Nippon Decimal Classification (NDC) system, extensively used in Japanese libraries, was devised in 1929. It is difficult to use NDC to classify world literature, such as fiction in English by non American, non British writers. This is not necessarily straightforward in other classification schemes but a survey of 40 Japanese university libraries, of which 24 responded, showed remarkable inconsistencies in the treatment of 22 world literature authors. NDC clearly needs updating to deal with this problem

- Abstract
- Several systems for the classification of fiction have been proposed to date, but experience shows that such classification partially depends on the culture and literary education in specific countries. Slovenian public libraries have traditionally used UDC as the only subject information on belles-lettres. Research has shown that users would prefer richer subject information. Therefore an attempt was made to enhance UDC by adding subject information, that should be helpful to users and librarians. The newly proposed Alternative Model system contains lists of verbal and alpha-numerical denotations for the basic groups of belles-lettres book material (main-genres: lyrics, drama, epics) and all other categorical criteria (language of the original literary work, literature to which the work belongs, genre, sub-genre) and half-categorical (accessibility of the content of literary works, origin within the periods of literary history, the century in which the literary work was written, the rhythm of the language). All these lists are available, but not included in this paper. The idea of the Alternative Model system is to show the possibilities of making the classification of belles-lettres in libraries more helpful, efficient and exact.

- Abstract
- Considers the theoretical questions involved in the indexing of fiction from several viewpoints: general principles of fiction indexing, and the making of book indexes for novels and other fictional works. Describes the work undertaken to develop fiction thesauri with particular reference to work done in Scandinavia, notably in the development of Kaunokki: the Finnish Thesaurus for Fiction, by Helsinki University Library and BTJ Group Ltd. Briefly presents notes on the structure of Kaunokkis with some examples of its practical use and user feedback from several years' experience of its use in Finnish public libraries. Concludes that the widest field for additional studies would be in the building up of special information systems for fiction.

- Describes a project designed to integrate art into the children's library at Espergaerde in Denmark. Explains the aims of the project, principally to make the use of the library an artistic experience, and the 3 tasks the project was to fulfil: the redesign of the interior using artwork by local artists; a change from the traditional arrangement of fiction; and provision of workshop facilities for children to exercise their artistic inclinations. Details how these tasks were accopmplished and discusses the results of the project, stressing the renewed appreciation of art and the importance of passing that on to children

- Abstract
- In the classification of fiction literature in public libraries its presentation on shelves and its depth analysis in card files or selective bibliographies should supplement each other. In the article some less known traditions in the English-language area of thematical classification schemes in Germany of the twenties and since World War II are investigated. Concludingly some principles in the form of theses are stated which should be observed in the subject analysis of fiction lietrature in order to be able to meet fully the multiplicity of readers' requests

- Abstract
- Purpose - To reflect on an editorial from an earlier issue entitled "The banning of books in libraries". Design/methodology/approach - A discussion of the argument presented in the original editorial and its connection to present-day concerns over the use and dissemination of information and links to other issues, together with the maintenance of a professional ethos in the face of those concerns. Findings - A set of moral absolutes does exist from which librarians can derive an ethos for the operation of their services. Such absolutes take on a greater significance in the complex moral climate in which we now live, but are now under threat. Practical implications - This article calls on library and information professionals to maintain their stand in the face of increasing pressures to compromise attitudes. Originality/value - Reflects on the continuing (and increased) importance of professional values.

- Abstract
- Investigates what effect the shelf classification of fiction had on the way that library users in the 2 branch libraries of Kajanni, Finland, use the library's stock of fiction and how they loan fiction. In 1 library the fiction stock was divided in 11 shelf categories, based on genres of fiction - in the other no changes were made. The books were also indexed and classified in the library's database. The project lasted for 3 years and the results were gathered by interviewing clients and making statistical analysis on loans in both libraries

- Abstract
- Information retrieval and exploration of work domains through databases and integrated information systems has become increasingly important in many modern work settings (as well as in libraries). The problem space of the users is defined on occasion by the dynamically changing requirements from their tasks and goals. it is argued that IR system design should be based on an analysis of the properties of the work domain, the task situation and the user characteristics. The paper describes a general framework for IR system design that has been used in the design of a library system. A special problem identified from use of the framework in domain analysis of fiction retrieval is treated in more detail: mapping the authors' domain structures to the domain structures expressed in users' needs in indexing and representation of fiction
