    Abstract
One difference between a portal and a mere search engine is that portals are now the recipients of investments from major media interests, a trend which may have important ramifications for the Web publishing. Points to AOL as a successful portal, quotes a compilation of 10 favourite Web activities and examines the contents of a portal, typically a search engine or directory plus free e-mail but also news services. A significant trend is for portals to replicate themselves in different languages. Presents a list of the big portal players

    Abstract
Presents a state of the art review of WWW search engines from the earliest Internet precursors and noting: prblems inherent in the current range of WWW search engines; problems of searching the WWW (link persistence and lack of integrated search software); and analyzing the resulting search engine types (keyword or directory). Compares search engines of all types across their generic features (database content, retrieval software, and search interface), rather than on a search engine by search engine basis. Considers wider information access issues arising from the nature of the Internet and Web search engines and proposes a general strategy for using web search engines. Comments on the irony that a unitary global information space accessible via 1 freely accessible software package (WWW client browser) should be so balkanized by a plethora of search engines in complete reverse of the traditional world of printed, CD-ROM and online databases, where a limited number and comparatively stable range of search tools attemps to homogenize a large number of physically separate and disparate collections

    Abstract
Describes the establishment of an Internet gateway local to the University of sussex, UK, firstly as a gopher and more recently as a WWW server. Describes a project currently uderway to assess the practical value of Internet searches to research and the consequential training and support requirements. Determines the value of a local gateway to academic researchers at Sussex and the roles specific to a local gateway that such comprehensive resources as Yahoo and BUBL cannot fulfil. The project is using an interview-based methodology to gain an understanding of researchers' views of Internet resource provision, and these interviews are being analyzed with the help of the NUD*IST qualitative data analysis software package

    Abstract
Altavista, one of the major search engines for the WWW has recently been made available by DEC in a version suitable for local use (AltaVistaPX). The system can be used to search files on hard disk or via networks. Unlike similar systems AltaVistaPX is not run as a separate program, but is embedded in Netscape or other browser, and can be added to a list of 'bookmarks'. Payment ($ 30,-) and downloading of the file can be made online

    Abstract
The Northern Light Internet search engine was inaugurated in Aug 1997. The service differs from existing services in that it classifies search results in a set of custom search folders and for a modest fee provides access to a range of bibliographical resources not normally available via the Web. Paymant may be made online via a simple transaction. The custom search folders enable users to refine searches more easily than with other search engines. However, the search commands to not permit truncated or wild card searches

    Abstract
Presents a view of portal sites as a radically different model from those currently embraced by traditional information companies. The concept of a portal as a starting point that Web users pass through is an uncomfortable one for most traditional services, which are designed to be one-stop destinations for information. It will become increasingly difficult for even the largest data warehouses to compete with the rising volume of Web content if closed end information models are not abandoned in favour of distributed ones which better reflect the reality of what is available to information consumers. Dow Jones Interactive Publishing is among the first to embrace a distributed model by indexing the sites which it believes have customer value, regardless of whether they offer their content on the subscriber service
