    Abstract
    In spite of their size, the major Web indexes are not comprehensive. Considers approaches carrying out comprehensive searches, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages. In the single search tool approach, users search the largest of the databses one by one, using the command language uniqe to each to increase the precision of the esearch. In the megasearch approach, search engines use 1 form that simultaneously seands a single query to a number of search engines and then presents the results. Inference Find, Dogpile and MetaFind are examples of good metasearch engines

    Abstract
    Continued development of the Internet requires the development of efficient, easy-to-use search engines. Ideally, such development should call upon knowledge and skills from a variety of disciplines, including computer science, information science, psychology, and ergonomics. The current study is intended to determine whether search engines shows a pattern of interdisciplinarity. 2 disciplines were selected as the focus for the study: computer science, and library/information science. A citation analysis was conducted to measure levels of interdisciplinary research and publishing in Internet search engine design and development. The results show a higher level of interdisciplinarity among library and information scientists than among computer scientists or among any of those categorized as 'other'. This is reflected both in the types of journals in which the authors publish, and in the references they cite to support their work. However, almost no authors published articles or cited references in fields such as cognitive science, ergonomics, or psychology. The results of this study are analyzed in terms of the writings of Patrick Wilson, Bruno Latour, Pierre Bordieu, Fritz Ringer, and Thomas Pinelli, focusing on cognitive authority within a profession, interaction between disciplines, and information-gathering habits of professionals. Suggestions for further research are given

    Abstract
    Evaluates the performance of 8 major Internet search engines in answering 21 real reference questions and 5 made up subject questions. Reports on the retrieval and relevancy ranking abilities of the search engines. Concludes that the search engines did not produce good results for the reference questions unlike for the subject questions. The best engines are identified by type of questions, with Infoseek best for the subject questions, and OpenText best for refrence questions

    Web search engines generally use best match search techniques, rather than traditional Boolean operators. Precision in searching will depend on the numbers of selected terms appearing in a document and the inclusion of less-common words in the search string. Users are, therefore, recommended to enter as many words as possible. ExCite and WebCrawler lead users from a relevant document to other documents containing similar word patterns, while MusCat and EuroFerret suggest additional keywords for searching

    Proposes a new idea of searching under the multi-engine search architecture to overcome the problems associated with relevance ranking.     Users who want to exploit all the information sources on the Web will need an efficient search and selection tool e.g. a directory or search engine. Directories list Web sites and analyze their contents. Describes the behind-the-scenes work of documentalists specialized in surfing, tracking and indexing French language sites for the directory Nomade. Describes the creation of Nomade, its functioning and indexing, and how this new profession of 'cyber-documentalist' is changing the practices and functions of information professionals as they become Internet information organizers

    Abstract
    This study compared the search features and retrieval performance of Yahooligans!, Ask Jeeves for Kids, and Super Snooper on identical searches. This extended the earlier research conducted by Bilal (1999), which examined the cognitive, affective, and physical behaviors of twenty-two 7th grade science students' use of Yahooligans! search engine. The three types of searches the students formulated in Yahooligans! on an imposed fact-driven query were here conducted in Ask Jeeves for Kids and Super Snooper. The retrieval performance criteria of the three engines included: (1) retrieval output, (2) relevance, (3) overlap in results, and (4) redundancy. A matrix of features (e.g., database coverage, search interface, search capabilities, retrieval interface, filtering, feedback, online help, FAQs, and advertisements) was developed to compare the engines. The performance of the natural language capability embedded in Ask Jeeves for Kids was evaluated by comparing the results retrieved directly from Yahooligans! to those Ask Jeeves for Kids returned from Yahooligans! on identical searches.The. results shed light on the strengths and weaknesses of each engine and appropriateness to specific types of queries. Yahooligans! was the most effective on keyword searching. Super Snooper returned the highest number of hits but with zero relevance on all types of searches. Ask Jeeves for Kids was successful only on one keyword search and failed both the natural language phrase and multiple keyword. Implications are made for improving the engines' design, retrieval performance, and search features, as well as for user instruction

    Abstract
    Describes the concept of a proxy based information classification and filtering utility, named Web Assistant. On the behalf of users a private view of the WWW is generated based on a previously determined profile. This profile is created by monitoring the user anf group activities when browsing WWW pages. Additional features are integrated to allow for easy interoperability workgroups with similar project interests, maintain personal and common hotlists with automatic modification checks and a sophisticated search engine front-end

    Abstract
    Presents Inquirus, a WWW meta search engine which works by downloading and analysing the individual documents. It makes improvements over existing search engines in a number of areas: more useful document summaries incorporating query term context, identification of both pages which no longer exist and pages which no longer contain the query terms, advanced detection of duplicate pages, improved document ranking using proximity information, dramatically improved precision for certain queries by using specific expressive forms, and quick jump links and highlighting when viewing the full document

    Abstract
    Where, how, and why are scholars invoked on the WWW? An inductively derived typology was used to captue genres of invocation. Comparative data were gathered using five commercial search engines. It is argued that the Web fosters mow modalities of scholarly communication. Different categories of invocation are identified and analyzed in terms of their potential to inform sociometric and bibliometric analyses of academic interaction
