    Empört zogen US-Autoren und -Verlage vor Gericht und handelten im Herbst einen Vergleich aus, den das Gericht noch genehmigen muss. Er sieht vor, dass Google die Verfahrenskosten trägt, jedem Autor eines ungenehmigt digitalisierten Buches 60 US-Dollar zahlt (insgesamt 45 Millionen US-Dollar) sowie 34,5 Millionen US-Dollar für die Gründung eines digitalen, von Google unabhängigen Buchregisters bereitstellt. Das Register soll die Einnahmen verteilen (37 Prozent an Google, 63 Prozent an die Rechteinhaber), die Google erwirtschaftet aus dem kostenpflichtigen Zugang zu Büchern oder ihrem Download (als Ebook oder Book on Demand), aus der Werbung sowie aus Online-Abonnements für Institutionen und Bibliotheken. Und natürlich dürfen die Scan-Maschinen weiter laufen. Die Konsequenzen des Vergleichs lassen tief durchatmen. Google erhält, warnt Robert Darnton in "The New York Review of Books", praktisch ein Digitalisierungsmonopol für die USA. Mehr noch: Die millionenfache Verletzung des Urheberrechts wird pragmatisch durchgewunken. Die Verlage erfreut nämlich, dass Google ein neues Geschäftsfeld erschlossen hat: all die vergriffenen Bücher, deren Nachdruck sie für nicht lohnend halten. Die Suchmaschinenfirma geht ihrerseits vom Prinzip der Finanzierung durch Werbung ab: Google wird auf einen Schlag weltgrößter Verleger und weltgrößter Buchhändler. Die Buchsuche wandelt sich zum Online-Buch(inhalte)verkauf.

    Abstract
    Morozov hat zudem eine Alternative zu Google geschaffen. Zumindest wird sein Dienst so in Teilen der Öffentlichkeit und im persönlichen Umfeld von Morozov wahrgenommen. Das Angebot trägt den Namen "The Syllabus" (auf Deutsch: "Das Register" oder "Das Verzeichnis"). www.the-syllabus.com. Das ist nach Sara Getz als Frontstellung gegen die "Attention Economy" zu verstehen, in der die Anbieter um die knappe Aufmerksamkeit ihrer Nutzer ringen. Wie erfolgreich sie dabei sind, wird nach Auflagenhöhen, Einschaltquoten, Klicks und "Likes" gemessen. Diese stellen einen Anreiz dar, kürzer, schriller, boulevardesker und oberflächlicher zu schreiben. Im Folgenden werden Beschreibungen und Bewertungen von "The Syllabus" seitens Sara Getz und Niklas Meek wiedergegeben. Hinzu kommen die Selbstbeschreibungen von Syllabus auf der eigenen Webseite und meine persönliche Bilanz, nachdem ich "The Syllabus" ein knappes Jahr genutzt habe.

    Komplett vermisst in allen Tools haben wir die Unterstützung von Access. Ein Sprecher von X1 beteuerte, das Tool verstehe Access bis zur Version 2. Das haben wir nicht nachgeprüft (nur Access 2003). Oft stellten wir Probleme mit Umlauten fest. Blinkx verzichtet komplett auf alles, was nicht Englisch ist. Früher gab es eine deutsche Version, und eine Sprecherin versicherte, es soll bald eine internationale folgen, die auch Deutsch beherrscht. Die vorliegende 3.5 ist hierzulande jedenfalls nicht zu verwenden. Copernic versteht keine Umlaute in HTML-Seiten, da diese als &xyz; vorliegen: K&uuml; statt Küche. Auch hier soll die nächste Version Abhilfe schaffen. In unserem letzten Test hatte Google ähnliche Probleme, das ist aber nicht mehr der Fall. Dafür filtert es HTML-Tags nicht richtig: z.B. Fe<b>tt<lb> findet es nicht als Fett sondern F ett. Der Anwender sollte sich genau klar machen und prüfen, in welchen Formaten seine Daten vorliegen. Das Suchtool sollte alle unterstützen. In den Index Nach der Installation stellt derAnwenderbei den meisten Tools ein, welche Ordner und Mail-Programme es in den Index einbeziehen soll. Dann beginnt der Indexer mit derArbeit, was je nach Größe einige Stunden dauern kann. Der fertige Index ist sozusagen eine Karte der Daten. Erenthält alle suchbaren Begriffe und den zugehörigen Dateinamen, wie ein Register der Festplatte. In diesem findet sich ein Suchbegriff viel schneller, als wenn das Tool jede Datei öffnen müsste. Google macht es sich besonders einfach: Es bricht die Indizierung bei etwa lOOk ab. Das konnten wir bei mehreren Dateiformaten (RTF, DOC, HTML) feststellen. Die erste Hälfte ist suchbar, die zweite nicht. Dieses Verhalten macht im Web sicher Sinn, den die ersten Seiten eines Dokuments geben Aufschluss über den Inhalt, nach dem der Anwender später sucht. Auf seinem Desktop sucht der An wender oft aber anders. Er hat eine ganz bestimmte Info, deren Ort erfin den möchte. Dazu müssen die Dokumente im Indexvollständig abgebildet sein. Google gab keine Stellungnahme dazu ab.
