    Abstract
With the many choices that can be built into information systems, it is possible to customize such systems for users, based on the tasks that users are accomplishing, on the personal characteristics of users, or a combination of these factors. Reports results of an experiment which detailed logging of use of experimental information systems and was used to determine the optimal configuration of these systems for each user. 4 experimental systems were specially designed and all used a single database of 668 bibliographic records. Tasks were varied, and the cognitive abilities of users were tested to assess one important personal characteristic. Results showed that it was possible to create an optimal configuration to match the cognitive abilities of users, but that it was more difficult to assess which configuration was the best match for specific tasks. The person in task interaction proved to be the least powerful indicator of design configurations. These results suggest that usable information systems can be created for users by careful analysis of the interaction of design features with personal characteristics such as cognitive abilities

    Abstract
Reports on the design of a GUI for the Okapi 'best match' retrieval system developed at the Centre for Interactive Systems Research, City University, UK, for online library catalogues. The X-Windows interface includes an interactive query expansion (IQE) facilty which involves the user in the selection of query terms to reformulate a search. Presents the design rationale, based on a game board metaphor, and describes the features of each of the stages of the search interaction. Reports on the early operational field trial and discusses relevant evaluation issues and objectives

    Abstract
Discusses the need for tailorable user interfaces, in particular for Web-based systems. User interfaces need to be configurable by the end users to match their skills and work requirements. Describes what configurability has been induced by user feedback and how tailorability for various degrees of user skills was integrated and implemented in the BSCW Shared Workspace system, a Web-based groupware tool

    Abstract
Presents a brief report on a study, carried out by the Centre for Interactive Systems Research, City University, to investigate the techniques used for evaluating OPACs: to explore and assess different data gathering methods in studying information seeking behaviour at the on-line catalogue; and to examine how a transaction logging facility could be enhanced to serve as a more effective diagnostic tool. Abstract
Information retrieval systems such as library OPACs have been largely designed to give the impression of being single user systems, the existence and activity of other users being hidden from each other. However, informal observations indicate significant collaboration between users despite the fact that existing systems fail to support this. Describes the development of an interface, the Ariadne system, that supports collaboration through the storage and re-use of others' search processes promoting better visualization of the information data structures being browsed and more effective means of communicating the browsing process. Discusses issues relating to privacy and ownership resulting from the storage of users' searches. Argues that introducing support for collaboration into information retrieval systems would help users to learn and use the systems more effectively

    Abstract
Describes the coming together of 2 independent user interface softwares for improving access to databases: MenUSE (Menu-based User Search Engine) and HIBROWSE (High Resolution Interface for Database Specific BROWsing and SEarching). MenUSE was developed for searching bibliographic databases whilst HIBROWSE is a front end for searching information stored on structured relational database management systems. Combining these 2 approaches affords users much greater access capabilities than is possible using traditional information retrieval systems. Describes the power of HIBROWSE in the context of EPOQUE (the European Parliament Online QUEry system) and the INSPEC database

    Abstract
A study of new information systems and databases shows that insufficient help is provided to enable users to exploit these resources adequately. Despite surveys which show that users rarely employ Boolean logic appropriately in formulating search strategies database producers continue to use it as an indexing tool. Moreover, although much effort has been devoted to developing navigation techniques to search databases, problems still arise with insufficient entry points and links between systems. Resources are currently being channelled into the development of virtual reality systems to help users

    Abstract
Proposes a model for integrating hypermedia and expert systems and describes an implementation. The proposed model consists of an expert system with a hypermedia user interface module and hypermedia output explanation module. Describes implementation based on the proposed model, and expert system named the Tourist Hyper-Expert Consultant (THECO). The results showed that the proposed model and structure, which employ hypermedia features, can enhance the user interface and output explanation modules of expert systems. Incorporating hypermedia into the user interface module enhances the flexibility of the expert system application in acquiring inputs from the users. Hypermedia also improved the ability of the output explanation module to give more comprehensive recommendations
