    Abstract
    Presents a brief, critical review of LISA PLaus: the CD-ROM database version of LISA and which includes the database of Current Research in Library and Information Science (CRLIS). The review covers the DOS version only, as it appeared in the Summer 1996 CD-ROM, noting that the Windows version was planned for the future. Points to the way LISA has found its mark, if not its fortune, in LISA Plus and notes its strengths, including: ideal suitability for current awareness in library and information science (LIS); massive and convenient consolidation of the published LIS literature; and massive increase in coverage from 7.900 abstracts in 1993 to over 12.000 currently. Criticizes certain features of LISA Plus, notably: the OPTI-Ware search interface; the combination of 2 databases (LISA and CRLIS) in a single, searchable database; and certain unexpected effects caused by the building of the Subject and Free Text indexes. Points particularly to great lack of consistency in the indexes and the indexing (faults that were fully rectified by a complete overhaul of the data in Summer 1996). Notes that LISA Plus is the first port of call for both information researchers and information science students. The Windows version of LISA Plus was launched in Spring 1997

    Reports the findings of a study, conducted by Temple, Barker and Sloane Inc., MA, which identified 7 measurable benefits of graphic user interfaces to computerized information retrieval systems; higher speed; more accurate work; higher productivity; less frustration; less fatigue, more facilities to self teach and explore system; greater facilities for novices to learn more about the system's capabilities. Concludes that, when compared with character based user interfaces, graphic user interfaces generate higher work outputs per work hour through higher productivity; higher work output per employee through lower levels of frustration and fatigue; and greater returns on information technology investment through reduced demand for user training

    Abstract
    Current user interfaces for textual database searching leave much to be desired: individually, they are often confusing, and as a group, they are seriously inconsistent. We propose a four- phase framework for user-interface design: the framework provides common structure and terminology for searching while preserving the distinct features of individual collections and search mechanisms. Users will benefit from faster learning, increased comprehension, and better control, leading to more effective searches and higher satisfaction.

    We describe a prototype Information Retrieval system; SENTINEL, under development at Harris Corporation's Information Systems Division. SENTINEL is a fusion of multiple information retrieval technologies, integrating n-grams, a vector space model, and a neural network training rule. One of the primary advantages of SENTINEL is its 3-dimensional visualization capability that is based fully upon the mathematical representation of information with SENTINEL.     Abstract
    The growth of medical, academic resources on the World Wide Web has led to much greater incentives and opportunities for nursing and medical students, researchers and practitioners to access Web resources. However, usersindividual differences and the variety of information-retrieval mechanisms provided by medical web resources may combine to reduce the benefits of this information resource. In a study designed to qualitatively analyse the interaction of such individual- and system-differences, a reliable method of representing WWW navigational data was found to be important in assisting traditional methodologies of representation and analysis. The methodology of graphically representing such navigational data, and the support such a technique may offer the qualitative analysis of user-system interactions, is thus described in detail and with reference to one specific example drawn from the data collected.     Abstract
    Reports progress and future plans for a project to study the interactions of users with information retrieval interfaces. Tests are run with professional data base searchers and with end users who are members of a profession but have little or no searching experience. Interfaces tested include a command language search system used to search DIALOG bibliographic data bases, a non-procedural system that produces DIALOG commands, and several full text systems, including one using hypertext.     Standards for user interfaces for access to bibliographic data bases cannot be developed without more complete understanding of the current user, user attitude and capabilities. Gives 3 means of achieving this based on observing the user. 45% of access points in subject searches results in no retrievals. Errors in searching on-line catalogues occur with a 40% no hit title search rate and a 51% no hit author search rate when those records were on the data base. Stresses the importance of fundamental user interface components contained in the IBM staff publication systems guide. Concludes that although there is no such thing as a standard user it is still vital to develop user standards

    Abstract
    Science mapping is discussed in the general context of information visualization. Attempts to construct maps of science using citation data are reviewed, focusing on the use of co-citation clusters. New work is reported on a dataset of about 36.000 documents using simplified methods for ordination, and nesting maps hierarchically. an overall map of the dataset shows the multidisciplinary breadth of the document sample, and submaps allow drilling down the document level. An effort to visualize these data using advanced virtual reality software is described, and the creation of document pathways through the map is seen as a realization of Bush's associative trails

    The HIBROWSE design offers improved searching functionality for users of bibliographic databases. The interface provides a multi windowed view of data stored on a relational database management system, using layered attribute value aggregation and classification. The user interrogates the database by invoking automatically formulated SQL queries that filter the contents of each window according to user selected attribute values.
