    Abstract
    This book outlines the human side of the information seeking process, and focuses on the aspects of this process that can best be supported by the user interface. It describes the methods behind user interface design generally, and search interface design in particular, with an emphasis on how best to evaluate search interfaces. It discusses research results and current practices surrounding user interfaces for query specification, display of retrieval results, grouping retrieval results, navigation of information collections, query reformulation, search personalization, and the broader tasks of sensemaking and text analysis. Much of the discussion pertains to Web search engines, but the book also covers the special considerations surrounding search of other information collections.

    Abstract
    Digital libraries need to facilitate the use of digital information in a variety of settings. One approach to making information useful is to enable its application to situations unanticipated by the original author. Walden's Path is designed to enable authors to collect, organize, and annotate information from on-line collections for presentaion to their readers. Experiences with the use of Walden's Paths in high-school classrooms have identified 4 needs/issues: (1) better support for the gradual authoring of paths by teachers, (2) support for student authoring of paths including the ability for students to collaborate on paths, (3) more obvious distinction between content of the original source materials and that added by the path author, and (4) support for maintaining paths over an evolving set of source documents. These observed needs have driven the development of new versions of Walden's Paths. Additionally, the experiences with path authoring have led to a conceptualization of metadocuments, documents whose components include complete documents, as a general domain where issues of collaboration, intellectual property, and maintenance are decidedly different form traditional document publication

    Abstract
    The purpose of this exploratory study is to develop research methods to compare the effectiveness of two video browsing interface designs, or surrogates-one static (storyboard) and one dynamic (slide show)-on two distinct information seeking tasks (gist determination and object recognition). Although video data is multimodal, potentially consisting of images, speech, sound, and text, the surrogates tested depend on image data only and use key frames or stills extracted from source video. A test system was developed to determine the effects of different key frame displays on user performance in specified information seeking tasks. The independent variables were interface display and task type. The dependent variables were task accuracy and subjective satisfaction. Covariates included spatial visual ability and time-to-completion. The study used a repeated block factorial 2x2 design; each of 20 participants interacted with all four interface-task combinations. No statistically significant results for task accuracy were found. Statistically significant differences were found, however, for user satisfaction with the display types: users assessed the static display to be "easier" to use than the dynamic display for both task types, even though there were no performance differences. This methodological approach provides a useful way to learn about the relationship between surrogate types and user tasks during video browsing

    Abstract
    This article presents one part of a wider study, performed at the Department of library and information science and book studies (LIS & BS) at the University of Ljubljana (UL). The study investigated the perceptions of user friendliness of information-retrieval systems (IRS) and the role of individual characteristics of users in these perceptions. Based on an expert study, a user study with 61 postgraduate students of the UL was performed. Three interfaces of e-journals were studied: Science Direct, Proquest Direct, and Ebsco Host. Questionnaires and observations were used for data collection. The users'perceptions of user friendliness and of importance of auxiliary functions were investigated. Also, the connections between these perceptions and the users'individual characteristics were identified. Three sets of individual characteristics were included: approaches to studying, thinking styles, and hemisphere leanings. In connection with the dimensions of individual characteristics, very different perceptions of user friendliness were expressed. Some dimensions of individual characteristics were also found to be connected to the users'academic areas. It is shown that participants from different academic areas have different requirements and perceptions of user friendliness. The results of the study are relevant for the design of the user interfaces of disciplinary IR systems. They also have implications for other areas, for example, user education and training.

    Fiction reading is often neglected by young people. One reason could be that traditional retrieval aids give little help in the retrieval of fiction. A graphic interface may solve this problem if it is designed according to specific criteria such as ease of use, use of icons, availability of a help function and provision of access points particularly suited to fiction. To formulate suitable criteria, the specific characteristics of young people, such as age, gender, computer literacy, reading ability, typing and spelling ability and vocabulary, will have to be considered

    Abstract
    Describes an experiment using 48 sixth-grade students to compare retrieval techniques using the print and CD-ROM versions of Compton's Encyclopedia. Four queries of defferent complexity (measured by the numer of terms present) were searched by the students after a short training session. The searches were timed and the retrieval steps and search terms were noted. The searches were no faster on the CD-ROM than the print version, but in both cases time was related directly to the number of terms involved. The students coped well with the CD-ROM interface and its several retrieval paths

    Abstract
    Project Jefferson was designed to help new students at the University of Southern California (USC) to acquire skills necessary for writing research papers through the example of research into ethical issues raised by the US Constitution. It runs on Macintosh Computers and is based on Apple Computer's HyperCard, a system wich allows users to browse different sources of information at their own pace and along their own routes while noting down useful discoveries in the notebook part of the system. Access to USC's locally mounted bibliographic data bases is also given without any tedious logging-on routines.

    Describes the coming together of 2 independent user interface softwares for improving access to databases: MenUSE (Menu-based User Search Engine) and HIBROWSE (High Resolution Interface for Database Specific BROWsing and SEarching). MenUSE was developed for searching bibliographic databases whilst HIBROWSE is a front end for searching information stored on structured relational database management systems.     Reports on work in progress to define an object oriented model of a probabilistic information retrieval system (OKAPI), the central component of which is the query itself. Considers how to represent queries both internally and at the user interface level, and their relationship with other components of the model.     Although several attempts have been made to devise simplified shelf arrangements for children, little consideration has been given to developing a simplified automated library catalogue. At Denver Public Library in the USA a catalogue has been devised enabling users to search via graphical symbols.     Abstract
    3 user interfaces to LIBIS, a library catalogue accessible via the Internet, were evaluated for use by people who are motor impaired, to identify how interface design influences the motor actions necessary to operate the system. Results confirm that minimizing the motor actions necessary for interaction with the interfaces is needed for this group and recommends improving consistency in design, optimizing instinctive awareness of how to use the system and providing informative feedback and instructive messages on how to progress. these recommendations will be validated through iterative adaptation and testing of the user interface, while designing a prototype library service

    Abstract
    In this paper we present the results of an experiment to help professional scientists and engineers undertake their own literature searches using a number of the major online bibliographic databases. The end-users, or experimental subjects, are already familiar with Deco, the text storage and retrieval system used by Unilever, but have little or no knowledge of the major online database systems, such as Orbit, Dialog, BRS, etc. The paper describes the design and development of a front-end system which simplifies the 'logon' procedure and converts Deco format commands into any of the other required languages. The users can thus search any of the major online databases just as if they were searching their own files on their local system ...

    Abstract
    There are 2 ways to use Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques: as a user interface coupled with a factual database or as an integrated part of a system which deals with a textual database. Describes Telmi, an information retrieval system designed for use with medium sized databases of short text and MGS, a commercialized system used in France Telecom. Telmi is integrated into a production scale prototype which implements a Minitel information service for the public. Discusses the Minitel service and user needs; MGS; the Telmi research system and the full version, the NLP architecture, the lexical and semantic levels; an example of the use of a generic system and the development of a multilingual system
