    Abstract
    The management of knowledge is considered to be one of the most important factors in economic growth today. However, the question of how to deal with knowledge in the most efficient way is still far from answered. We observe two fundamentally different approaches to the question of how we should deal with knowledge. One view sees knowledge as a kind of static object that can be gathered, compiled and distributed; the other view regards knowledge as a dynamic process. This disaccord finds a parallel in an objective-subjective distinction where the first position sees knowledge as independent of personal opinion whereas the second position regards it as interpretative. These discussions are not merely academic but crucially influence the way that knowledge management (KM) is realized, i.e. whether the focus is placed on knowledge artefacts such as documents or on subjective acts. The particular interest of the current essay concerns the question of how KM can be supported by information technology (IT) and which are the fundamental structures that must be regarded. Traditionally, IT-based approaches favour an object-oriented view of knowledge since knowledge artefacts are the objects that can be best processed by IT systems. This even leads to the view that knowledge artefacts represent the only form of knowledge. On the philosophical side this perspective is fostered by analytical investigations that emphasize the primacy of propositional knowledge that is closely related to knowledge artefacts.

    Abstract
    Robertson and Spärck Jones pioneered experimental probabilistic models (Binary Independence Model) with both a typology generalizing the Boolean model, a frequency counting to calculate elementary weightings, and their combination into a global probabilistic estimation. However, this model did not consider indexing terms dependencies. An extension to mixture models (e.g., using a 2-Poisson law) made it possible to take into account these dependencies from a macroscopic point of view (BM25), as well as a shallow linguistic processing of co-references. New approaches (language models, for example "bag of words" models, probabilistic dependencies between requests and documents, and consequently Bayesian inference using Dirichlet prior conjugate) furnished new solutions for documents structuring (categorization) and for index smoothing. Presently, in these probabilistic models the main issues have been addressed from a formal point of view only. Thus, linguistic properties are neglected in the indexing language. The authors examine how a linguistic and semantic modeling can be integrated in indexing languages and set up a hybrid model that makes it possible to deal with different information retrieval problems in a unified way.

    Abstract
    We discuss the needs of a knowledge organization scheme for supporting Web-based software applications. We show how it differs from traditional knowledge organization schemes due to the virtual, dynamic, ad-hoc, userspecific and application-specific nature of Web-based knowledge. The sheer size of Web resources also adds to the complexity of organizing knowledge on the Web. As such, a standard, global scheme such as a single ontology for classifying and organizing all Web-based content is unrealistic. There is nevertheless a strong and immediate need for effective knowledge organization schemes to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of Web-based applications. In this context, we propose a novel knowledge organization scheme wherein concepts in the ontology of a domain are semantically interlinked with specific pieces of Web-based content using a rich hyper-linking structure known as Superlinks with well-defined semantic roles. We illustrate how such a knowledge organization scheme improves the efficiency and effectiveness of a Web-based e-commerce retail store.

    Abstract
    Documents in rich text corpora usually contain multiple facets of information. For example, an article about a specific disease often consists of different facets such as symptom, treatment, cause, diagnosis, prognosis, and prevention. Thus, documents may have different relations based on different facets. Powerful search tools have been developed to help users locate lists of individual documents that are most related to specific keywords. However, there is a lack of effective analysis tools that reveal the multifaceted relations of documents within or cross the document clusters. In this paper, we present FacetAtlas, a multifaceted visualization technique for visually analyzing rich text corpora. FacetAtlas combines search technology with advanced visual analytical tools to convey both global and local patterns simultaneously. We describe several unique aspects of FacetAtlas, including (1) node cliques and multifaceted edges, (2) an optimized density map, and (3) automated opacity pattern enhancement for highlighting visual patterns, (4) interactive context switch between facets. In addition, we demonstrate the power of FacetAtlas through a case study that targets patient education in the health care domain. Our evaluation shows the benefits of this work, especially in support of complex multifaceted data analysis.

    Abstract
    Internet of Things (IoT) brings the third development wave of the global information industry which makes users, network and perception devices cooperate more closely. However, if IoT has security problems, it may cause a variety of damage and even threaten human lives and properties. To improve the abilities of monitoring, providing emergency response and predicting the development trend of IoT security, a new paradigm called network security situation awareness (NSSA) is proposed. However, it is limited by its ability to mine and evaluate security situation elements from multi-source heterogeneous network security information. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an IoT network security situation awareness model using situation reasoning method based on semantic ontology and user-defined rules. Ontology technology can provide a unified and formalized description to solve the problem of semantic heterogeneity in the IoT security domain. In this paper, four key sub-domains are proposed to reflect an IoT security situation: context, attack, vulnerability and network flow. Further, user-defined rules can compensate for the limited description ability of ontology, and hence can enhance the reasoning ability of our proposed ontology model. The examples in real IoT scenarios show that the ability of the network security situation awareness that adopts our situation reasoning method is more comprehensive and more powerful reasoning abilities than the traditional NSSA methods.     Abstract
    AGI - Information Management Consultants liefern seit nunmehr 16 Jahren eine Software zur Entwicklung von Thesauri und Klassifikationen, ehemals bezeichnet als INDEX, seit zweieinhalb Jahren als IC INDEX neu entwickelt. Solche Terminologien werden oft auch als Glossar, Lexikon, Topic Maps, RDF, semantisches Netz, Systematik, Aktenplan oder Nomenklatur bezeichnet. Die Software erlaubt zwar schon immer, dass solche terminologischen Werke mehrsprachig angelegt sind, doch es gab keine speziellen Werkzeuge, um die Übersetzung zu erleichtern. Die Globalisierung führt zunehmend auch zur Mehrsprachigkeit von Fachterminologien, wie laufende Projekte belegen. In IC INDEX 5.08 wurde deshalb ein spezieller Workflow für die Übersetzung implementiert, der Wortfelder bearbeitet und dabei weitgehend automatisch, aber vom Übersetzer kontrolliert, die richtigen Verbindungen zwischen den Termen in den anderen Sprachen erzeugt. Bereits dieser Workflow beschleunigt wesentlich die Übersetzungstätigkeit. Doch es geht noch schneller: der eTranslation Server von Linguatec generiert automatisch Übersetzungsvorschläge für Deutsch/English und Deutsch/Französisch. Demnächst auch Deutsch/Spanisch und Deutsch/Italienisch. Gerade bei Mehrwortbegriffen, Klassenbezeichnungen und Komposita spielt die automatische Übersetzung gegenüber dem Wörterbuch-Lookup ihre Stärke aus. Der Rückgriff ins Wörterbuch ist selbstverständlich auch implementiert, sowohl auf das Linguatec-Wörterbuch und zusätzlich jedes beliebige über eine URL adressierbare Wörterbuch. Jeder Übersetzungsvorschlag muss vom Terminologie-Entwickler bestätigt werden. Im Rahmen der Oualitätskontrolle haben wir anhand vorliegender mehrsprachiger Thesauri getestet mit dem Ergebnis, dass die automatischen Vorschläge oft gleich und fast immer sehr nahe an der gewünschten Übersetzung waren. Worte, die für durchschnittlich gebildete Menschen nicht mehr verständlich sind, bereiten auch der maschinellen Übersetzung Probleme, z.B. Fachbegriffe aus Medizin, Chemie und anderen Wissenschaften. Aber auch ein Humanübersetzer wäre hier ohne einschlägige Fachausbildung überfordert. Also, ohne Fach- und ohne Sprachkompetenz geht es nicht, aber mit geht es ziemlich flott. IC INDEX basiert auf Lotus Notes & Domino 5.08. Beliebige Relationen zwischen Termen sind zulässig, die ANSI-Normen sind implementiert und um zusätzliche Relationen ergänzt, 26 Relationen gehören zum Lieferumfang. Ausgaben gemäß Topic Maps oder RDF - zwei eng verwandte Normen-werden bei Nachfrage entwickelt. Ausgaben sind in HMTL, XML, eine ansprechende Druckversion unter MS Word 2000 und für verschiedene Search-Engines vorhanden. AGI - Information Management Consultants, Neustadt an der Weinstraße, beraten seit 1983 Unternehmen und Organisationen im dem heute als Knowledge Management bezeichneten Feld. Seit 1994 liefern sie eine umfassende, hochintegrative Lösung: "Information Center" - darin ist IC INDEX ein eigenständiges Modul zur Unterstützung von mehrsprachiger Indexierung und mehrsprachigem semantischem Retrieval. Linguatec, München, ist einstmals aus den linguistischen Forschungslabors von IBM hervorgegangen und ist über den Personal Translator weithin bekannt.
