    Abstract
    Retrieval techniques may be based on the full text of documents, or on descriptors selected from a thesaurus. The latter approach constitutes an attempt to bridge the gap between demand and documents, which causes problems if demand cannot be forecast. Building up a thesaurus involves choosing the method of collecting descriptors, choosing the actual descriptors and making the system easily accessible to users. Classification and a classified catalogue are essential to the organisation of knowledge. Rules for the formation of classes have developed out of natural systems of classification. Chain indexing greatly aids the formation of the subject index. UDC and DDC are used in most documentation centres in the Netherlands. Public libraries mostly use SISO, a Dutch universal classification system

    Abstract
    Lacking a universal working language, information managers around the world cannot now deal reliably and efficiently with multilingual documentation. Language mismatch paralyses international cooperative efforts such as multinational bibliographic standardisation, linking of collections, and sharing the work of classification and indexing. Knowledge of the same second language by all information managers can open the communication channels needed for worldwide cooperation. Ethnis and ideological rivalries prclude success in this role by any of the conventional languages. The planned language, Esperanto, is the logical choice because of its neutrality, rational structure, clarity and expressive power. Pioneering projects in automatic language processing, not possible in English, are feasible in Esperanto

    Abstract
    One current trend in information retrieval that can facilitate resource sharing and cost reduction is the sread of common indexing languages. Of the more sophisticated languages available, clearly the best known and widely adopted is PRECIS. One of the claims made for PRECIS by its designer is that the role operators it uses correspond to linguistic universals, making PRECIS eminently suitable for multilingual indexing. This strong claim, if justified, could make PRECIS the common indexing language of choice where translation problems have high priority, as they do in Canada.
