    Abstract
A summary of a survey of the use of the DDC in libraries of the United States and Canada is presented. (5% of alle libraries in the United States and Canada use DDC; of these are at least 75% use the most recent full or abridges edition. Librarians wish to have DDC revised continuously, but they do not want the meanings of numbers changed. Any assistance that can be provided in the application of DDC is welcome. Most of the larger libraries do not believe zhat the current index provides sufficient assistance. Divisions needing revision are listed with an index number reflecting priority. DDC is seen to be warmly regarded by librarians in general and by public service librarians in particular

    Abstract
The terms which comprise an entry in an index can be arranged in various ways. The use use roles or facets such as 'thing-action-part-effect' under which terms can be categorized allows the use of citation orders which preserve the syntactic relationships between terms in a string. Alphabetization and rotation in context are simple methods but with certain disadvantages for the users. The citation order of BTI results in a detailed index using punctation to indicate relationships. PRECIS incorporates prepositions which preserve necessary entries. Articulated indexes use natural language phrases displayed under selectes subject headings. These methods could be used to construct book indexes

    Abstract
The criticisms made against chain indexing are reviewed, and PRECIS briefly considered as a possible (but improbable) general substitute for indexing. The failures of chain indexing arise mainly from an inherited overemphasis on generic relationships, encouraged by careless use of the term 'chain'. The use of symbols to represent relations between terms is suggested for the chain index, to emphasize syntagmatic relations and prevent ambiguity. These relationships can be used to manipulate the index terms into likely additional index approaches, employing the logical concepts of symmetry and transitivity which derive from a structure inherent between relations, a sort of 'metarelations'. The transitivityy of the relations of action or property to object over the relation of material to object are particularly considered, and clues to this relational structure obtained from Aristotle's theory of causation

    Abstract
The paper deals with procedures and problems arising when computers are used as tools in the production of indexes. The following steps of the procedure are explained and studied: 1) Correction of machine-readable records; 2) Production of index entries. Here, various methods and forms (KWIC, KWOC, rotation method) and dictionary use are described and discussed, and information about their advantages and disadvantages is given; 3) Sorting and cumulation of index entries; 4) Output and setting, output feasibilities are detailed. Emphasis is also laid on the problems arising from the non-satisfactory links of the processing chain: data recording, limited fonts, and choice of index terms.
