    Abstract

    Abstract
Outlines the aims of the UCLA/OCLC Core Record Pilot Project (UOCRP) to test the assumptions that: the creation of core level cataloguing will take less time than that required for full level cataloguing; and core records will provide sufficient access to materials through their description and through authorized headings for names, subjects, uniform titles and series. Reports results of the study of the record creation phase of the UOCRP. A total of 384 records were created, consisting of 234 core and 150 full (control) records. Approximately half of the core records were coded level K in OCLC, and half level I. Core record creation was found to be significantly faster than control record creation (8,5-17%), depending upon whether learning curves are factored in. Core records created included, on average, 1,52 subject headings and 1,01 name headings each; the control records averaged 2,05 subject headings and 1,59 name headings each. Notes that the importance of these differences for access is unclear. Of the 384 records created, 30 core records and 15 control records, were subsequently used by 91 institutions within 2 months of their creation. Of the 45 used, only 7 were modified (6 core and 1 control). Of the 10 modifications made to these records, only 2 involved the addition of controlled access points. With OCLC support, UCLA will continue to gather use and modification data for a year

    Abstract
News is information about recent events of general interest, especially as currently reportes by newspapers, periodicals, radio or television. News is the quintessential multimedia data. While newspaper editors (human and/or algorithmic) may still define the core content of electronic news, new communication technologies will enable the integration of news from a wide variety of sources and provide access to supplemental material from enormous archives of electronic news data (text, photos, and video) in digital libraries as well as the continual streams of newly created data. The goal of electronic news delivery within this context is, however, distiguishable from both news news groups and document retrieval. Electronic news promises to deliver to the reader an edited collage of recent events from wide domains in a manner that is both comprehensive and personalized. As part of a long-term research project into the design of future news delivery systems, we have developed an overall architecture and several prototypes. These prototypes are presented in the article, along with a discussion of issues related to the presentation metaphor and to the functionality of electronic news delivery services. A prototype was demonstrated at the 1995 G-7 Economic Summit in Halifax, Canada, integrating newspaper text and photographs with television news video clips across an ATM network

    Abstract
Presents a state of the art review of the literature of expert systems in library and information science, involving exhaustive searches of all major LIS CD-ROM databases (LISA, ERIC, LiLi, INSPEC etc.) and bibliographies appended in review articles. The search retrieved 679 references, comprising 362 periodical articles, 180 conference proceedings, 63 books articles, 28 theses and 46 monographs. The growth of the literature peaked between 1989 and 1990 and subsequently declined after 1992. Over 1/3 (287) covered intelligent front ends and interfaces for online searching and retrieval, followed by applications in reference service (113), classification, indexing and abstracting (86) and cataloguing (7). The most productive periodicals comprised 6 titles, of which 'Information processing and management' topped the lsit: 43 authors were found to contribute between 5 and 35 articles each, hence contributing 32,19% of the total contributors. 382 of the publications were single author works, 172 were by 2 authors, 72 were by 3 authors and 49 were by 4 or more authors. Only 161 titles were expressive enough to reveal both the name and function of systems being developed
