    Abstract
Online bibliographic databases and document request facilities have been available for many years, with the anticipation of much higher bandwidths on the networks, it becomes feasible to consider their application for the document delivery phase. Electronic document delivery could become an important weapon in the battle to control the rising costs of maintaining collection of research publications. In the context of heterogeneous wide area networks, such as forms the basis for communication within the European research community, the use of electronic mail, and particularly X.400 is an attractive strategy for electronic document delivery. One advantage is that it may be used for many other functions than simple document transfer

    Abstract
To reach a broad acceptance for the OSI Directory Service it is necessary to offer well designed human interfaces to Directory User Agents (DUAs) tailored to the requirements of specific user groups. Describes the implementation of a light-weight DUA called ITAXA (interface to an X.500 Agent) to provide easy access to the OSI directory of non-technical users. The interface is embedded in the typical computing environment of our audience. It uses the similarity between the OSI directory and the usual telephone directory as well as an equivalence between the Directory Information Tree and a hierarchical local file system to simplify ti usage of the directory services for non-technical users

    Abstract
Reports on the work of the ABDUX project to investigate the use of the standardized protocol for the X.500 directory service for searching distributed bibliographic databases. It is a joint project between the Computer Science Department of the University College London, and the Library and Computer Service of Brunel University, UK. Gives a design overview and discusses the implementation phase of the project which involved: enhancements to an X.500 system; implementing user interfaces; and gathering test data for the system. Examines experiences with the system, and assesses why interest in the system has been less than hoped for. Puts forward a model for bibliographic querying which recognises the role of other protocols. Summarizes the main lessons to be drawn from the project

    Abstract
Describes the current state and likely future derictions of CWIS developments in the UK. Considers alternative models for CWIS architectures, concentrating on the client-server approach. Discusses the protocols which may be used to support this model including X.500, Search and Retrieve, Z39.50 and WAIS. Examines how the client-server approach can support access to an information base which is distributed across campus and in due course between campuses. Discusses standards for information provision

    Abstract
Describes the use of presentation software, at Texas A&M University, for computer assisted instruction to train end users in the use of the OPAC. The software chosen for the University's Sterling C. Evans Library is Show Partner F/X. Major software attributes include: the ability to capture and download screens from NOTIS or other applications, including dialog searches and CD-ROM data bases; the ability to create original graphics and text
