    Abstract
Traces the development of distance education programmes which has been fuelled by the non-traditional student, the growth of the Internet, television and videoconferencing. Key elements of library services for distance education are: reference services, a portfolio of nearby libraries or other resources, document delivery, provision of a broad suite of electronic databases, electronic journals, a database of subject specialists, and use of electronic resources on the WWW

    Abstract
Professional librarians operate in an environment characterized by a high level of change. In order to respond to this information environment, it is essential for science and engineering librarians to keep pace with the staggering growth in research information and resources, and with the heightened expectation of the populations with which they interact. The paradox of the need for subject specificity coupled with the need for diversity of subject knowledge presents reference librarians with an unusual challenge. Continuing education programs that are woven into the fabric of job responsibilities can be utilized effectively to enhance the abilities of reference librarians and the quality of services delivered. In this article, Cromer and Testi present a model of a structured, integrated continuing education program for reference librarians utilized at the University of New Mexico's Centennial Science and Engineering Library

    Abstract
Considers the importance of fiction, and the role of the librarian in the successful acquisition and exploitation of fiction books. Examines training and education in this area for both students and practising librarians, and provides details of some possible ways of updating skills through a course being offered by the School of Information Studies at the University of Central England in Birmingham

    Abstract
Describes the EDUCATE (End User Courses in Information Access through Communications Technology) project for end user training in information access. EDUCATE is a Commission of the European Communities, Libraries Programme Project, involving: Limerick University, Ireland (coordinator); and the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussees, France; Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden; Imperial College, London; and Plymouth University, UK; and Barcelona University, Spain. the aim is to produce a model self paced user education course in the selection and use of information tools. Courses have been produced within physics and electric and electronic engineering. the project started in Feb 94 and will run for 3 years. Describes the course ddesign and the media developed. Discusses the use of networks in connection with EDUCATE and notes the tools and interfaces used

    Abstract
The IMPEL2 Project, a JISC-funded Electronic Libraries Programme project based at the University of Northumbria, Newcastle, UK, is focusing on the human and organizational aspects of electronic library development. The project has 5 individual but linked strands, one of which is looking at the implementation of resource based learning in higher education institutions and the impact upon Information Services staff. Reports the findings of the IMPEL2 Project on resource based learning which indicate that the role of the subject librarian in academic libraries is changing, that subject librarians are taking on new duties and responsibilities and have an important part to play in the mplementation of resource based learning

    Abstract
A national multi-gigabyte-per-second research and education network known as the NREN is to be established by 1996, according to the High Performance Computing Act of 1991 passed in Dec 1991. NREN, referred to as the information highway is expected to provide scientific, educational, and economic benefits for the US, and to serve as the basis for an all-encompassing National Information Infrastructure available to all citizens. An annotated bibliography presenting a representation of the literature that provides a history of the NREN as well as a sense of the evolving concerns and visions of this exciting revolution of the Information Age. Includes items that offer general and specific background information, and visions, viewpoints, and issues related to the NREN

    Abstract
Reviews the consequences of the traditional division of library staff into Technical Services and Reader Services and if decreased interest in cataloguing by library managers. Notes ways in which non cataloguers have had limited involvement in cataloguing. Describes different forms of a holistic approach to library practice and suggests advantages of a holistic work plan. Considers problems of a holistic work plan, advances some solutions and identifies implications for education in cataloguing in library schools

    Abstract
In 1989, Pomona College and Claremont McKenna College, two of the Claremont Colleges, received a grant funded by the Knight Foundation through its Excellence in Undergraduate Education program. As fulfilment of the grant's objectives to strengthen library services and to provide remote access to electronic databases, a CD-ROM network was installed at the libraries. Discusses the establishment of the network, the planning and delivery of instruction in use of both local and remote databases, and the impact of electronic technologies of the libraries of the Claremont Colleges

    Abstract
Describes how the department of teacher education of the Catholic College of Leuven at Heverlee in Belgium created a large database of audiovisual materials in a short time in the near absence of existing CD-ROM or online databases from which it might have downloaded. Discusses the advantage of making a new database from existing one and describes the origins of the project, the software and database structure, selection criteria, initial success, and problems. Considers the quality of the data, describes the continuation of the project and evaluates the project

    Abstract
Discusses whether an institutional life can be built upon patterns of digital communication, and if it would resemble that founded on print technologies. considers whether the architecture of digital texts and virtual spaces is capable of creating a sense of place in the way that library architecture does, exploring the character of cyberspace as a public place within which participation in an intellectual community or civic life might be created and nurtured

    Abstract
Investigates evolving notions and expressions of community and networks, in the context of educational culture which is engaged in the process of discovering the opportunities and challenges presented by communications and information technologies. Parallel to this is the task of identifying key elements or threads that might be common to a wide diversity of educational electronic communities

    Abstract
Cataloging is an important part of library education. Concerns about the declining number of required introductory cataloging courses led to this study in which data collected from library school bulletins were compared to data gathered in a similar 1986 study. Results indicate that the number of required iniroductory cataloging courses has dropped.

    Abstract
Asserts that UK public libraries are now busier than ever and are facing higher public expectations of the services on offer. Explores some of the possible reasons for this. Government initiatives including the Citizen's Charter, as well as fundamental changes in all areas of the education systems, are highlighted as being major contributions to the changes in usage. The introduction of the National Curriculum, the impact of open learning courses and reduced personal and instituional spending power within academic libraries have prompted both teachers and students to turn in increasing numbers to the public reference library. Discusses some of the implications for the management of theses services and outlines some possible strategies for the future

    Abstract
Image content opens up exciting possibilities for stand-alone media, distributed networks, online networks, and on-site publishing from information systems for use by the general public, for research, collection management, education and distance learning. These developments coincide and overlap with widespread new questioning and thinking as to the role of museums in relation to their diverse publics and also may have many parallels in the library world. They raise difficult questions about intellectual propriety rights - copyright protection, fair renumeration and complex questions concerning moral rights. Clearly international cooperation, working partnerships and consortia are going to gain further importance and significance

    Abstract
The author proposes that a knowledge classification scheme be organized around four educational purposes of higher education. These purposes correspond to four curricula that are taught in institutions of higher education-the general education curriculum, the specialist education curriculum, the curriculum for the education of researchers, and the curriculum for the education of educators. Implications for the design of such a classification scheme are also suggested.
