    Abstract
Discusses the results of a survey describing special librarian's use of the worldwide computer networks INTERNET and BITNET. Facilities available on INTERNET include electronic mail, computer conferencing, remote login ('telenet') to other libraries' catalogues and file transfer protocol (FTP) which allows the user to log to a remote host to tranfer files. The National Research and Education Network (NREN) is expected to develop over the next 5 years into a high-capacity fibre optic cable network that will link computer user in government, industry, academic, publishing, research and libraries

    Abstract
Reports a survey conducted in April 1997 of 136 Japanese WWW and Telnet OPACs from the persepctive of their functions and user interfaces. These included: types of searchable files; access points; kinds of displays; login commands; search methods; Boolean operation; help functions; search history; and browsing of indexed terms. Results indicate a sharp rise in the number of WWW OPACs and problems with the provision of functions and user interfaces by Japanese WWW OPACs

    Abstract
The vast sources of information, in formatted files, online publications requiring registratiion and login, many statistical files as well as subject databases where results appear as dynamically created HTML pages, are not accessible to Web spiders and thus constitute a hidden Internet. In addition there are non-Web resources such as ftp archives where such materials as research papers can be obtained free. Explains a number of approaches to the hidden Internet including using the list 'Direct links to the search interfaces of resources not easily searchable ..." compiled at the Gelman Library, George Washington University and the Internet Sleuth. Also reviews publications to aid those using Photoshop for designing graphics

    Abstract
Discusses the role of the URL as a menas od uniquely identifying an item of information on the WWW in the context of traditional methods. Includes: standard bibliographic description; LoC card number; ISBN, ISSN; MEDLINE Unique Identifier and OCLC Control Number. Presents the general URL model and the basic structure of URL codes. Discusses specific URL structures: file related URLs (file and ftp); WWW URLs (http); Gopher URLs (gopher); electronic mail URLs (mailto); Usenet newsgroups URLs (news); and remote login URLs (telnet and tn3270). Notes other proposals for identifying Internet resources and services that often become misinterpreted as URLs and lists some of the characters which may not be used within a URL. Although the URL is an official standard for referencing WWW resources, it is not yet recognized as a universal citation model for Internet resources

    Abstract
Database usage data from a random sample of academic and public libraries in the U.S. and Canada reveals patterns of use in selected types of libraries. Library users in both public and academic libraries tend to use commercial online databases most frequently early in the week, mid-day, and at times that correspond to the academic calendar (November in this six-month sample.) The mean number of simultaneous users is correlated with the size of the population served and the number of workstations available, but relatively low numbers of users are simultaneously logged on to research databases at all sizes of libraries. A questionnaire sent to these same libraries identified many other factors that might influence database use, including levels of instruction, availability of remote login, placement of a database on the library's homepage, although none of these factors was found to be statistically significant
