    Abstract
Discusses the advent of software packages (termed front end packages) which are installed on PCs or Macintosh machines and provide the user with an interface to online databases. The packages involved usually provide graphical user interfaces (GUIs) and are dedicated to particular online systems. Focuses on KR ProBase which was introduced by Knight-Ridder in 1995 for information specialists to search DIALOG and DataStar (though not yet with a single interface). Describes the features of this product. Concludes with a brief discussion of the alternatives to host specific software packagaes, Z39.50 and Web browsers such as Netscape

    Abstract
Presents a detailed analysis and assessment of EndNote Plus and EndLink, the successful bibliography formatting software program for Windows produced by Niles & Ass. Inc. of Berkeley, CA. The use of EndNote can be learnt without training courses or outside assistance, simply by following the manual. The current version of the program is 2.1 (Apr 1996), but ot allows everything done in the DOS and Macintosh versions to be reused automatically. Provides e-mail Internet addresses for Niles & Ass.; detailes of software required; instructions on how to order EndNote; and other useful data

    Abstract
The article focuses on several developments for the Macintosh computers. The following topics are presented: the Mac Library System (MLS) for the automation of cataloging, inventory control, circulation, serials control, and patron access; the AppleCD SC as a front loading drive that also can play CD audio while a user works on another application; 'books in print' on a prototype Macintosh version; Aires Systems Co.'s MEDLINE KnowledgeFinder for the Macintosh

    Abstract
Lists 19 tips, based on the author's experience with IBM compatible CD-ROM workstations, designed to yield improved performance by more efficient use of the computer hardware, particularly the hard disc. The tips also apply to Macintosh workstations. Covers: optimising files; placing CD-ROM software at the front of the hard disc; using disc caching software; use of the autopark facility; checking the interleave; browsing for orphan files; using CHKDSK/f command; low level formatting of hard disc; purchasing of microcomputers with large RAM caches; stepping up in MHZ and CPU; using more memory and memory management software; putting full path before software is loaded by AUTOEXEC.BAT and batch files; REM software specific lines in AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS; feeding paper tp printer from a box on the flor; booting up in turbo mode and with Num Lock off; speeding up cursor keys; and protecting system enhancements

    Abstract
In 1989, the Albert R. Mann Library at Cornell University, New York, conducted a comparative study of user competence, behavoiur, and preference in the application of text and graphics search-and-retrieval software. SilverPlatter Information Inc. IBM PC and Apple Macintosh programs (PC SPIRS and MacSPIRS respectively) were evaluated. Librarians observed 40 students who searched the ERIC data bases. The reactions of theses student subjects were collected in written questionnaires. Suggests the limitations of the current state of the art in the application of graphical use interface principles to bibliographic search-and-retrieval software
