    Abstract
    Der österreichische Computerpionier Heinz Zemanek hat mit dem Lötkolben in der Hand begonnen, Computer zu bauen. Er hat die Entwicklung des Computers aktiv miterlebt - von der Relais-Additionsschaltung bis zum Halbleiter-Chip, von der Lochstreifen-Befehlseingabe bis zur formalen Definition der Programmiersprachen. Er hat kybernetische Modelle mit Studenten und Mitarbeitern gebaut und programmiert. Gemeinsam mit seinem Kollegen Konrad Zuse gilt er als Begründer der modernen Datenverarbeitung in Europa. 1954 baute er das Mailüfterl einen volltransistorisierten Binär-Dezimal-Rechenautomaten", der aus 3.000 Transistoren, 5.000 Dioden und 30 km Draht bestand. Mit einer Breite von 4 Metern, einer Höhe von 2,5 Metern und einer Tiefe von 50 Zentimetern war das Ungetüm gegenüber den damaligen Röhrenrechnern klein. Auch mit kybernetischen Grundmodellen wie der "Maus im Labyrinth", der "künstlichen Schildkröte" oder dem "Homöostat" betrat er Neuland.

    Abstract
    Die Stadtbibliotheken Köln und Bremen haben zusammen mit der Bremer Universität im Rahmen eines vom BMWF durchgeführten Projekts die 'infoThek' zur Bereitstellung elektronischer Medien in Bibliotheken entwickelt. Mittels einer grafisch orientierten Bildschirmoberfläche ermöglicht das System einen menügesteuerten benutzerfreundlichen Zugang zu digital gespeicherten Informationssammlungen. Das auf der Basis von Toolbook entwickelte Informationssystem ermöglicht nicht nur die Einbindung von elektronischen Büchern bzw. CD-ROM-Anwendungen, sondern auch die Bereitstellung von Stadtinformationen, die von lokalen Anbietern in elektronischer Form bezogen werden können. Das System führt eine Anzahl unterschiedlicher Anwendungen in übersichtlichen Menüs zusammen, so daß der Bibliotheksbenutzer einfach und schnell einen Überblick über das vorhandenen Informationsangebot erhält

    Abstract
    Ziel der US-amerikanischen TREC (Texte REtrieval Conference) Initiative ist es, zum einen Standard-Kollektionen von Teten zu erstellen, auf deren Basis verschiedene Retrieval-Ansätze verglichen werden können. Zum anderen sollen Kollektionen einer Grösse aufgebaut werden, die realistischen Anwendungen nahe kommen. Damit soll das alte Vorurteil der Untauglichkeit neuerer IR-Methoden (bzgl.     Abstract
    Eine ganze Anzahl von Bibliotheken in Europa befaßt sich mit der Entwicklung von Internet Subject Gateways - einer Serviceleistung, die den Nutzern helfen soll, qualitativ hochwertige Internetquellen zu finden. Subject Gateways wie SOSIG (The Social Science Information Gateway) sind bereits seit einigen Jahren im Internet verfügbar und stellen eine Alternative zu Internet-Suchmaschinen wie AltaVista und Verzeichnissen wie Yahoo dar. Bezeichnenderweise stützen sich Subject Gateways auf die Fertigkeiten, Verfahrensweisen und Standards der internationalen Bibliothekswelt und wenden diese auf Informationen aus dem Internet an. Dieses Referat will daher betonen, daß Bibliothekare/innen idealerweise eine vorherrschende Rolle im Aufbau von Suchservices für Internetquellen spielen und daß Information Gateways eine Möglichkeit dafür darstellen. Es wird einige der Subject Gateway-Initiativen in Europa umreißen und die Werkzeuge und Technologien beschreiben, die vom Projekt DESIRE entwickelt wurden, um die Entwicklung neuer Gateways in anderen Ländern zu unterstützen. Es wird auch erörtert, wie IMesh, eine Gruppe für Gateways aus der ganzen Welt eine internationale Strategie für Gateways anstrebt und versucht, Standards zur Umsetzung dieses Projekts zu entwickeln

    Abstract
    Der gegenwärtige Wandel zur Informationsgesellschaft betrifft auch die Bibliotheken. Schlagworte wie "virtuelle Bibliothek" oder "digitale Bibliothek" tauchen immer häufiger in der Bibliothekslandschaft auf. Die Bücher-Bibliotheken" werden nicht verschwinden, aber sie müssen sich der Herausforderung der Informationsgesellschaft stellen und ihre Rolle neu definieren. Wissenschaftliche Bibliotheken nehmen sich bereits seit einiger Zeit der neuen Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien an, aber auch für die Öffentlichen Bibliotheken besteht Handlungsbedarf. Das Land Salzburg hat deshalb eine Studie mit dem Titel "Die Digitale Bibliothek" bei der Techno-Z Fachhochschule Forschung und Entwicklung GmbH in Auftrag gegeben, die Strategien für die Weiterentwicklung der Öffentlichen Bibliotheken des Landes im Informationszeitalter entwickeln soll. Die Ergebnisse dieser Studie sind nicht nur für die Öffentlichen Bibliotheken im Land Salzburg von Interesse, sondern betreffen auch andere Regionen und deren Bibliothekslandschaft. Aufgrund der großen Nachfrage haben wir uns daher zu einem Sonderdruck des Heftes 15 der "Materialien zur Weiterbildung in Salzburg" mit den wichtigsten Ergebnisse der Studie entschlossen.     Abstract
    Da in den nächsten Monaten zahlreiche Institutionen und Gremien der Europäischen Union über den Richtlinienvorschlag zur Harmonisierung des Urheberrechts und der verwandten Schutzrechte in der Informationsgesellschaft beraten werden, hat eine BDB/DBI-Arbeitsgruppe das folgende Statement formuliert und - ergänzt um weitere Unterlagen - im Juli 1998 an deutsche Mitglieder des Europa-Parlaments versandt, um die Position der deutschen Bibliotheken deutlich zu machen.
