    Abstract
By meticulously categorizing life, maybe there's a chance we can save some species from extinction. That's perhaps the source of the excitement that erupted online when a team of leading biologists and software engineers announced the Encyclopedia of Life project in early May. The scientists plan to create an online catalog of the genome, geographic distribution, phylogenetic position, habitat, and ecological relationships of all 1.8 million known species on the planet. To do it, they'll use the latest technologies and scientific methods -- but they'll also use Carl Linnaeus' 272-year-old taxonomy system. James Hanken, director of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University where he teaches evolutionary biology will lead Harvard's role in the project. The author of over 100 scientific publications, he's also an accomplished photographer, with his work appearing in Natural History, Audubon and Playboy. Hanken chatted with Wired News about Linnaeus' legacy in an age of genetic discovery that the father of taxonomy could not have imagined -- and the movement to uproot the Linnaean system.

    Abstract
Wikis are established means for the collaborative authoring, versioning and publishing of textual articles. The Wikipedia project, for example, succeeded in creating the by far largest encyclopedia just on the basis of a wiki. Recently, several approaches have been proposed on how to extend wikis to allow the creation of structured and semantically enriched content. However, the means for creating semantically enriched structured content are already available and are, although unconsciously, even used by Wikipedia authors. In this article, we present a method for revealing this structured content by extracting information from template instances. We suggest ways to efficiently query the vast amount of extracted information (e.g. more than 8 million RDF statements for the English Wikipedia version alone), leading to astonishing query answering possibilities (such as for the title question). We analyze the quality of the extracted content, and propose strategies for quality improvements with just minor modifications of the wiki systems being currently used.

    Abstract
The Wikipedia is a collaborative encyclopedia: anyone can contribute to its articles simply by clicking on an "edit'' button. The open nature of the Wikipedia has been key to its success, but has a flip side: if anyone can edit, how can readers know whether to trust its content? To help answer this question, we have developed a reputation system for Wikipedia authors, and a trust system for Wikipedia text. Authors gain reputation when their contributions are long-lived, and they lose reputation when their contributions are undone in short order. Each word in the Wikipedia is assigned a value of trust that depends on the reputation of its author, as well as on the reputation of the authors that subsequently revised the text where the word appears. To validate our algorithms, we show that reputation and trust have good predictive value: higher-reputation authors are more likely to give lasting contributions, and higher-trust text is less likely to be edited. The trust can be visualized via an intuitive coloring of the text background. The coloring provides an effective way of spotting attempts to tamper with Wikipedia information. A trust-colored version of the entire English Wikipedia can be browsed at http://trust.cse.ucsc.edu/
