    Abstract
    Noch immer gestaltet sich die Verständigung zwischen Geistes- und Naturwissenschaften äußerst schwierig, und die Spaltung des Wissens in zwei 'Kulturen' stellt ein echtes Problem dar. Die Grenzen werden mittlerweile zwar immer durchlässiger, die Fronten aber bestehen weiter. Dabei nehmen die Vertreter beider Denkrichtungen nicht nur oftmals kaum Notiz voneinander, sie dehnen mittlerweile ihre Deutungs- und Erklärungsangebote auch weit in das jeweils angrenzende Arbeitsfeld hinein aus. So neigen Geisteswissenschaftler manchmal dazu, die Welt insgesamt als geschichtlich-sprachliches Kulturphänomen anzusehen, während Naturwissenschaftler selbst die Kultur für ein Stück wissenschaftlich erforschbare Natur halten. Bei solcher Betrachtungsweise ist es verständlich, daß die Erfolge und Anliegen der jeweils anderen Seite nur unzureichend zur Kenntnis genommen werden. Umso notwendiger ist es deshalb, Möglichkeiten des Dialogs aufzuzeigen, ohne die kontroversen Positionen zu verharmlosen.

    Abstract
    Wenn es in diesem Jahrhundert so etwas wie eine zentrale intellektuelle Faszination gibt, dann liegt sie wahrscheinlich in der Entdekkung des Beobachters. [...] Das Faszinosum wie auch das Skandalon der Entdeckung des Beobachters liegt in dem Umstand, daß man Blindheit und Einsicht aller kognitiven Prozesse zusammen als die eine Seite einer Medaille erkennen muß, deren andere Seite wir nicht kennen. Zwischen Blindheit und Einsicht können wir hin und her wechseln. Für die Beobachtung erster Ordnung, die Beobachtung von Sachverhalten, genügt das allemal. Erst auf der Ebene der Beobachtungen zweiter Ordnung, der Beobachtung von Beobachtungen, fällt auf, daß Sachverhalte immer nur Sachverhalte für einen Beobachter sind und daß der Beobachter nicht sieht, was er nicht sieht. Aufklärung, Ideologiekritik, Hermeneutik und Psychoanalyse machen sich dies zunutze. Aber das Problem liegt tiefer. Das Problem liegt darin, wie Heinz von Foerster bündig formuliert, daß der Beobachter nicht sieht, daß er nicht sieht, was er nicht sieht.
