    Abstract
    In einem Studienprojekt "Multimedia-CD-ROM RDK - Reallexikon zur Deutschen Kunstgeschichte" während des Sommersemesters 2002 und des Wintersemesters 2002/03 haben Studierende des Schwerpunktes Medienerschließung, Information Retrieval des Studiengangs Bibliothekswesen den prototypischen Aufbau einer multimedialen, integrierten Nutzungsumgebung des Reallexikons zur Deutschen Kunstgeschichte realisiert. Die Ergebnisse sowie die zu Grunde liegende Vorgehensweise werden in diesem Bericht vorgestellt. Bedingt durch verschiedene Eigenschaften des Originals, das auf höchstem wissenschaftlichen Niveau Zusammenhänge und Fakten in einer Printausgabe ohne bislang hinreichende Zugangsmöglichkeiten (es fehlen bislang Sach- oder Personenregister) anbietet, waren verschiedene Schwierigkeiten zu überwinden, um eine mediengerechte Präsentation der Artikel mit guten Such- und Findemöglichkeiten zu entwickeln. Im Rahmen des Projektes wurden fünf Artikel, die in der Printversion zusammen ca. 60 Seiten umfassen, sowie zusätzliche Informationen in eine Datenbankumgebung eingebracht, die aus sechs einzelnen, teilweise miteinander verknüpften Datenbanken besteht. Grundlage war hierfür die Software MIDOS 2000. Für die Datenbank wurde anschließend eine adäquate Suchumgebung gestaltet. Dem Benutzer wird dort eine zielgenaue Recherche ermöglicht und die vernetzte Navigationsstruktur bietet die Gelegenheit, komfortablen Zugang zu den Inhalten des Reallexikons und den zusätzlichen Informationen zu erhalten. Ergänzt wird der Projektbericht um je einen Beitrag von Herrn PD Dr. W. Augustyn zur Vorstellung des Reallexikons zur Deutschen Kunstgeschichte und von Herrn Bernd Ginzkey zum Funktionsumfang der Software MIDOS.

    Abstract
    Information retrieval (IR) is a complex human activity supported by sophisticated systems. Information science has contributed much to the design and evaluation of previous generations of IR system development and to our general understanding of how such systems should be designed and yet, due to the increasing success and diversity of IR systems, many recent textbooks concentrate on IR systems themselves and ignore the human side of searching for information. This book is the first text to provide an information science perspective on IR. Unique in its scope, the book covers the whole spectrum of information retrieval, including: history and background information; behaviour and seeking task-based information; searching and retrieval approaches to investigating information; interaction and behaviour information; representation access models; evaluation interfaces for IR; interactive techniques; web retrieval, ranking and personalization; and, recommendation, collaboration and social search multimedia: interfaces and access.     Abstract
    This book coherently documents the results and experiences of a major digital library pilot effort, the MeDoc project (Multimedia Electronic Documents). This two-year project was initiated by the German Informatics Society (GI) and involved authors, publishers, librarians, and computer science departments. The prototype distributed digital library system developed during the initiative was operated in a nationwide trial for several months. The book presents the technical and operational results achieved during the project as well as input from foreign digital library acftivities.     Abstract
    Recent years have seen an explosive growth in the use of new database applications such as CAD/CAM systems, spatial information systems, and multimedia information systems. The needs of these applications are far more complex than traditional business applications. They call for support of objects with complex data types, such as images and spatial objects, and for support of objects with wildly varying numbers of index terms, such as documents. Traditional indexing techniques such as the B-tree and its variants do not efficiently support these applications, and so new indexing mechanisms have been developed.As a result of the demand for database support for new applications, there has been a proliferation of new indexing techniques. The need for a book addressing indexing problems in advanced applications is evident. For practitioners and database and application developers, this book explains best practice, guiding the selection of appropriate indexes for each application. For researchers, this book provides a foundation for the development of new and more robust indexes. For newcomers, this book is an overview of the wide range of advanced indexing techniques.     Content Organization in the New Millennium is a compilation of papers contributed to the Seminar on 'Content Organization in the New Millennium' (2-4 June 2000). There were nine invited presentations on various aspects of content organization. The rapid developments in and widening range of use of the Internet worldwide is enabling easy access to information and data globally and almost seamlessly. The quantity, range and variety of information - as text, image, graphics, sound, and multimedia - that is accessible is indeed vast. On the other hand, the ease with which almost any data or information can be placed on and disseminated via the Internet is causing problems for information seekers. One of the causes of these problems is the amorphous nature of the information accessed which has only minimal organization. This results in, among other things, retrieving too much information that is Irrelevant to the subject of interest to the user, and, many a time, it is like searching for a needle in a haystack. Recently, information professionals and subject specialists have become concerned with the situation and have experimented with tools, techniques and strategies, and with the use of time-tested classificatory ideas and other knowledge organization tools, such as thesauri, to mitigate the problems. The paper on "Knowledge Management and Content Organization" by L.J. Haravu places the subject of content organization in the broader canvas of knowledge management (KM). Content organization and the tools necessary to aid knowledge discovery, a basic objective of most information seeking activity, is discussed in the paper "Content Organization as an Aid to Knowledge Discovery" by A. Neelameghan. In that paper, the role of statistical, informetric and scientometric techniques are mentioned, but elaborated on by I.K. Ravichandra Rao in his paper "Quantitative Techniques for Content Analysis." HTML forms for web publishing and embedding metadata have been in wide use; but they are being extended or replaced by XML, XSL, etc. for customizing "Data Type Definitions" to enhance retrieval effectiveness. Shalini R. Urs and K.S. Raghavan discuss this aspect of content organization based on the experience of building a database of theses. The variety of factors to be taken into consideration in content organization for Internet-based information services is elaborated by T.B. Rajashekar on the basis of practical experiences at the Indian Institute of Science. S.B. Viswakumar identifies factors that may affect content organization in multimedia databases. Handling the scripts and vocabulary of Indian languages in organizing the contents of databases raises additional problems and issues, and these are being examined in an increasing measure as more and more such databases are being constructed in this country. B.A. Sharada considers some aspects of the problems of preparing databases in Kannada language. The papers by M.A. Gopinath and G. Bhattacharyya deal, respectively, with the training required for and professional aspects of, content organization.
