    Abstract
    Das Information Retrieval steht in theoretischer und praktischer Hinsicht im Zentrum der Informationswissenschaft. Das Buch vereinigt beide Bereiche, indem es seinen praktischen Ausgang von realen Situationen der Online-Informationsvermittlung nimmt und zugleich einen wichtigen Beitrag zu einer Theorie der Frageformulierung in Information Retrieval an sich leistet. Mit 'realen Situationen' sind mitprotokollierte Online-Sitzungen bzw. CD-ROM Recherchen gemeint. Diese Recherchen wurden teils kooperativ, d.h. zusammen mit den Endbenutzern, oder nicht-kooperativ, d.h. alleine von professionellen Informationsvermittlern, durchgeführt und in der Arbeit ausgewertet. Die Studie ist damit der sog. verhaltensanalytischen Richtung des Information Retrieval zuzurechnen

    Abstract
    Wir befänden uns auf dem Weg ins "Zeitalter der spirituellen Maschinen" (so der Originaltitel) und seien schon (z.B. mit Schach-, Poesie- und Übersetzungs-Computern, an deren Entwicklung und Vermarktung der Autor wesentlich beteiligt war) weit auf diesem Weg vorangekommen. Das Buch selbst ist - "mit Hilfe eines Spracherkennungsprogramms" teilweise direkt in den PC diktiert und mit vielen Internet-Quellen-Hinweisen versehen - ein weiteres Beispiel hierfür. Diese Entwicklung gehe weiter, nicht etwa nur linear, sondern "mit wachsenden Ertragszuwächsen", d.h. exponentiell. Was das konkret für Bildung, Behinderte(n-Integration), Kommunikation, Wirtschaft, Politik, Kunst, Militär und Medizin bedeuten könnte, wird mit Prognosen für 2009, 2019, 2029 und einem Ausblick auf 2099 erläutert. Zur Plausibilität seiner Prognosen verweist der Autor ausführlich und stolz darauf, daß wesentliche Prognosen seines Werkes "KI: das Zeitalter der künstlichen Intelligenz" punktgenau eingetroffen seien. Ein anregendes, durch Personen- und Sach-Register gut erschlossenes Werk.

    Abstract
    Das Gebiet der Wissenspräsentation und Inferenz umfaßt einen zentralen Bereich der Intellektik, d.h. des Gebietes der Künstlichen Intelligenz und der Kognitionswissenschaft. Es behandelt einerseits die Fragen nach einer formalen Beschreibung von Wissen jeglicher Art, besonders unter dem Aspekt einer maschinellen Verarbeitung in modernen Computern. Andererseits versucht es, das Alltagsschließen des Menschen so zu formalisieren, daß logische Schlüsse auch von Maschinen ausgeführt werden könnten. Das Buch gibt eine ausführliche Einführung in dieses umfangreiche Gebiet. Dem Studenten dient es im Rahmen einer solchen Vorlesung oder zum Selbststudium als umfassende Unterlage, und der Praktiker zieht einen großen Gewinn aus der Lektüre dieses modernen Stoffes, der in dieser Breite bisher nicht verfügbar war. Darüber hinaus leistet das Buch einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Forschung dadurch, daß viele Ansätze auf diesem Gebiet in ihren inneren Bezügen in ihrer Bedeutung klarer erkennbar w erden und so eine solide Basis für die zukünftige Forschungsarbeit geschaffen ist. Der Leser ist nach der Lektüre dieses Werkes in der Lage, sich mit Details der Wissenspräsentation und Inferenz auseinanderzusetzen.
