It is written not only for librarians, but more importantly for undergraduates doing mathematical research, for graduate students, and for faculty exploring new areas. This is the 66th volume of Dekker's Books in Library and Information Science. It is divided into two parts, "Tools and Strategies," and "Recommended Reading by Subject," and it has two indexes: author and subject. The first place a seasoned mathematician is likely to browse is Part II, "Recommended Readings by Subject," just to check the list of resources for his or her subject. The subjects included are: History of mathematics Number theory Combinatorics Abstract algebra Algebraic and differential geometry Real and complex analysis Differential equations Topology Probability theory and stochastic processes Numerical analysis Mathematical biology Mathematics education NOTE: We understand from the editor that contributors for other subjects (like mathematical logie) would have been welcome. Each subject is given a chapter written by a mathematician and/or a mathematics librarian. Each entry gives enough information to locate and even order the resource, and often a one- or two-sentence description. The emphasis is an books, but key journals and on-line resources are also indicated. The chapters generally contain an introduction, a section an general sources, and then sections for the major subdivisions of a field. Sections often refer to general texts, and then further refine the subdivision. For example, the chapter an topology by Alan Hatcher contains a section an introductory books, then sections an algebraic topology, manifold theory, low-dimensional topology, history, and other resources. The section an manifold theory, for example, discusses differential topology, piecewise-linear topology, topological manifolds, and surgery theory.
    Part 1, "Tools and Strategies," contains three chapters. The first is a very interesting one an the culture of mathematics. For undergraduates who are thinking about advanced study (or for friends and family who are puzzled about what a mathematician does), this is a concise and even elegant overview. "Tools" continues with chapters an "Finding Mathematics Information" and an "Searching the Research Literature." Both chapters are written by experienced mathematics librarians and answer questions asked by those learning and studying mathematics. "Finding Mathematics Information" contains sixteen sections (too many to enumerate)-two of our favorites are "Locating Definitions and Basic Explanations" and "Finding or Verifying Quotations and Anecdotes." As with Part II, each entry contains complete bibliographic information with a one- or twosentence abstract. "Searching the Research Literature" contains five sections: introduction, strategies, finding journal articles using indexes, finding papers an the Web, and obtaining the resources found. This chapter is more of a discussion than a list of resources, but like the chapter an "Finding Mathematics Information" would be helpful for someone just beginning research in mathematics. Because this work is primarily arranged by discipline, it offers a different perspective than Nancy D. Anderson and Lois M. Pausch, editors, A Guide to Library Service in Mathematics (Greenwich, CT: JAI Press, Inc.), 1993. One might also consult the $65 book by Martha Tucker and Nancy Anderson, Guide to Information Sources in Mathematics and Statistics (Westport, CT: Libraries Unlimited), 2004. The book's major drawback is its price - 42c per page vs. 19c for Tucker and Anderson. However, it is still an important addition to your library's collection, a relevant resource for undergraduate and graduate student advisors, and perhaps a gift for the new librarian who will be working with your department."

The current U.S. presidential election cycle has brought dramatic attention to this, with primary candidates using the Internet both to reach out to disaffected potential voters and to quite effectively raise funds for their campaigns. In short, this "new media" is no longer a novelty in the political arena, but a force that commands respect. In Democracy and New Media, the editors have assembled contributions from the social sciences, humanities, information science, and communication studies that attempt to address the relationship between democracy and evolving technology, using empirical and theoretical analysis. In addition, policy makers and shapers are represented in this volume, sharing interpretations of the impact of Internet technology upon democratic processes and structures. Democracy and the Internet: Some Considerations might have been a more accurate title for the volume under consideration here, because this tome poses questions and attempts to frame discussion, rather than provide concrete answers or definitive arguments. Andrew Feenberg's work, Questioning Technology (1999) and the essay collection Society an the Line: Information Politics in the Digital Age (1999), edited by William H. Dutton, will definitely be worthwhile reading for scholars interested in these topics. Other books that pursue similar lines of dialogue and are worth examining are the essay collection Virtual Politics: Identity and Community in Cyberspace (1997), edited by David Holmes, and Decomcracy.com? (1999), edited by Elaine Cuilla Kamarck and Joseph S. Nye, Jr. Articles that will complement these essays are Antje Gimmler's work, "Deliberative Democracy, the Public Sphere and the Internet," that appeared in Philosophy and Social Criticism 2 (2001), and a study by Thomas Johnson and Barbara Kaye, "A Boost or Bust for Democracy: How the Web Influenced Political Attitudes and Behaviors in the 1996 and 2000 Presidential Elections," that appeared in Press/Politics 8 (2003). Democracy and New Media is arranged around three themes. The first section, How Democratic Is Cyberspace? contains 11 essays. This is the most far-reaching and theoretical section of the book. The second section, a four-essay piece called Global Developments, raises some interesting questions that serve as micro examples of issues pursued at a more theoretical level in previous and subsequent chapters. The comparative nature of the volume is seen here, with chapters addressing the impact of technology an a nation interspersed with chapters that ultimately describe countries or regions where technology is absent in all but the most rudimentary forms. These contrasts, and the insights of the writers, allow seemingly disparate topics to become an intriguing dialogue. The third chapter, News and Information in the Digital Age, examines the changes created by faster and more accessible media.

Being aware of this lack of a well-structured retrievable disciplinary literature, the editors made a practice of attending trade shows and conferences attended by KM professionals to look for presentations that would in some way expand knowledge of the field. They asked presenters to turn their paper into a book chapter, which is the major source of the material in this book. Although this is a somewhat chancy method of identifying authors and topics, several of the papers are excellent and a number add to an understanding of KM. Because of the fluidity of the area of study, the editors devised a three-dimensional topic expansion approach to the content so that the reader can follow themes in the papers that would not have been easy to do if one relied solely on the table of contents. The table of contents organizes the presentations into eight subject sections, each section with a foreword that introduces the topic and indicates briefly the contribution of each chapter to the overall section title. Following this, the Roadmap lists 18 topics or themes that appear in the book and relevant chapters where information on the theme can be found. Readers have the choice of following themes using the roadmap or of reading the book section by section. ..."
