    Abstract
    Reports results of an investigation, undertaken at Sheffield University, Departmant of Information Studies, UK into the effects of postings information (the display on the screen of the number of references in the retrieved sets) on searching behaviour. Linked online searches were conducted, on the LISA database on CD-ROM, with and without postings information. Performance in terms of the number of relevant references, precision and recall was not significantly different whether postings information was available or not; but searches with postings information took more time and more sets were viewed than in searches without postings. Searchers thought that the lack of postings information had affected 90% of their searches. Proposes that training should place greater emphasis on the value of postings information at different stages of the search and should optimize the searching behaviour of those with different searching styles

    Abstract
    Summarizes findings of an international study on information-seeking habits and preferences: With extensive input from hundreds of librarians and OCLC staff, the OCLC Market Research team developed a project and commissioned Harris Interactive Inc. to survey a representative sample of information consumers. In June of 2005, we collected over 3,300 responses from information consumers in Australia, Canada, India, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States. The Perceptions report provides the findings and responses from the online survey in an effort to learn more about: * Library use * Awareness and use of library electronic resources * Free vs. for-fee information * The "Library" brand The findings indicate that information consumers view libraries as places to borrow print books, but they are unaware of the rich electronic content they can access through libraries. Even though information consumers make limited use of these resources, they continue to trust libraries as reliable sources of information.

    Abstract
    Reports results of a study, conducted by the European Society of Paediatric Research (ESPR), to determine whether the information content of structured medical abstracts is greater than abstracts with traditional format and whether the efficacy of peer review is improved by the use of structured medical abstracts. The sample studied comprised the abstracts of papers submitted for the ESPR annual meeting and each abstract was assessed by a research worker by a research worker for information content by referring to a list of criteria. The words in each abstract were counted to obtain the information density of each and the abstracts were evaluated according to whether they were in an unstructured format, a semistructured format, or a more fully structured format. Although there was no significant difference in the scientific score of the scientific information density of the different formats there was significantly more information in the fully structured format. When the abstracts were resubmitted in structured format, there was always a highly significant increase in the information content

    Abstract
    Reports results of a study to monitor information activities of selected UK public libraries and special libraries and to collect enquiry data from 7 different information services (2 public reference libraries; 2 public lending libraries; a tourist information centre; and 2 special libraries). Data was categorized according to length of answer, mode of enquiring; type of enquiry; and subject of enquiry. Results indicated that the special libraries had longer enquiries and received more by telephone, fax transmission and letter than the public libraries. Furthermore, they made most use of computerized information services. Business and commerce enquiries were most freqeuntly asked at the public reference libraries. Answering community information and children's enquiries were the common tasks of public lending libraries. Minimal overlap accured in the provision of tourist information

    Abstract
    Describes a project aimed at setting up a 1 stop scientific, technical and commerical information service for technical companies at Belasis Hall Technology Park, Cleveland, UK. The project accomplished this by: identifying the information needs of the existing and potential tenants; establishing how best to meet those needs (paying a special attention to the role of online information) and setting up a 1 year pilot project: disseminating the results of the project for replication elsewhere and making information provision an integral part of science park design; promoting information as a basis for problem solving and decision making; promoting close links with the users; determining which sources and methods of delivery are most relevant (patents, trade directories, market research reports, online searches); developing a charging policy for the service with a view to the service becoming self financing; increasing the partners' experience in resource sharing; developing a training needs analysis for both providers and users; developing performance indicators; and monitoring the service provided

    Abstract
    Reports the results of a preliminary investigation of techniques of evaluation applied to information technology based communication systems such as: electronic mail; facsimile transmission (fax); voice mail; and teleconferencing. The aim of the study was to develop a methodology for the consistent and systematic evaluation of such systems using qualitative factors as the basis for the evaluation framework. Concludes that: there is no reported framework within the literature surveyed that deals adequately with the evaluation of information technolgy based communications systems; it is possible the generate evaluation methodologies that can be used consistently and systematically in decision making about information technology based communication systems; and substantial further work is rrequired to validate and develop the recommended methodologies

    Abstract
    W.S. Cooper's utility theory was used to evaluate end user and mediated searching of online and CD-ROM databases. The searches were conducted by 510 end users, using MEDLINE. The relevance of the references and the usefulness of the documents retrieved were examnied. The study also assessed the perceived value to end users of the information retrieved. Mediated online searching cost 3 times as much as end user CD-ROM searching, but was only about twice as effective in terms of user satisfaction; user convenience should be a high priority for the information provider and mediated CD-ROM searching may be the best compromise currently available as regards cost effectiveness and successful information retrieval for end users
