    Abstract
Many health science libraries are now in the planning stages for acquisition of local online catalogs and circulation systems. Whether turn-key or in-house, in most cases such systems will be based on machine-readable records, or archive tapes, produced as a by-product of automated cataloging. Because most libraries originally used these systems as a more efficient means to produce catalog cards, the usefulness of the records is questioned. A review of selected aspects of cataloging via OCLC reveals several areas in which local card production priorities have made the resultant archive tapes more difficult and costly to use as a machine-readable database. Some specific suggestions are given for altering input procedures to improve the usefulness of archive tapes. In conclusion, it is recommended that librarians re-examine local input procedures in light of cost-effective production of archive lapes to produce consistent bibliographic entries for local online catalogs, resource sharing projects and management information systems.

The authors take the reader through a comprehensive exposition of cataloguing - the definitions, arrangement and role of the catalogue: the history of its development; standardization and AACR2; the subject approach via pre-and post-coordinate indexing; analysis; filing rules and methods; the physical forms of the catalogue; the use of the computer in cataloguing; the role of networks; the management of cataloguing; and the relevance of book indexing. There is a detailed index, as well as a list of abbreviations and acronyms and a glossary of terms.

    Abstract
The task facing the designers of information retrieval (IR) systems can be stated very simply: to produce the right kind of system with the right components at the right price. In practice, however, this task is greatly hindered by a lack of understanding and communication between the different groups of specialists working on different parts of the system - a problem exacerbated by the fact that each group uses a different jargon, so preventing the exchange of ideas and expertise. There is thus a need for a comprehensive, unified overview of practical computer-based retrieval, and this book provides one. It describes the various parts and their alternative forms, the relationships between them and how these affect the working of the system as a whole. Topics covered include: user, software, knowledge representation, expert systems, database management systems, hardware, user interfaces.

    Abstract
Because rare book cataloging stresses the unique and characteristics of the species in special collections, it tends to be eclectic, chaotic even, in resisting standards and uniform description. Rare book librarians have therefore sought alternatives to AACR2 for bibliographic description at more detailed levels of control than this standard. Slowly a hierarchy of levels for the bibliographic control of books, manuscript and printed, is evolving which has a counterpart in archival control. As librarians choose appropriate levels of description for rare books and manuscripts, cost considerations must play their proper role. A survey of the major rare book and manuscript repositories in the U.S. and Canada provides comparative data for the cost of cataloging at levels higher than AACR2 and delineates other characteristics of RBSC operations for personnel, compensation, unit costs, backlogs, regional variance, standards in practice, accommodation of automation and networking, methods of providing intellectual access, and acquisition activities. This study discusses the concept of phased cataloging and collection management but suggests that current practices are not yet rationalized into an integrated system for the bibliographic control of rare books and archival control of manuscripts and records.
