    Abstract
Subject access plays an important part when plans are made for an on-line public access catalogue (OPAC). Therefore, current subject searching facilities in OPACs should be accessed carefully. These facilities include, amongst other things, phrase searching, keyword searching and class number retrieval. Users reaction have been instrumental in identifying certain shortcomings in subject access to OPACs. Points out certain shortcomings in subject access, as shown by a number of research projects undertaken during the past decade. Highlights aspects which could, in future, improve subject access in OPACs. This could be achieved by either enhancing content representation in the records within the OPAC data base or by enhancing the searchability and browsability of the OPAC. Considers whether the on-line catalogue will ever be a finished, perfect product, or achieve the universal, familiar uniformity experienced by users of the 20th century card catalogue.

    Abstract
Examines searching capabilities and search results relating to the same full text data base made available by: a host that offers a command language designed for searching bibliographic data bases and a host that provides search facilities that have been specially designed for full text retrieval. Moreover, the CD-ROM format of an encyclopedia is compared with the equivalent on-line version of the same work, Academic American Encyclopedia. Results reveal that it is easier to search on those systems that offer searching facilities which have been specially designed for full text retrieval.

    Abstract
Geographic indexing is usually handled in the same way as other indexing; that is, through the use of controlled vocabulary, often in a hierarchical arrangement from broad region (such as continent) to smaller regions (such as country, county, geologic province, topographic feature, city). But a geographic location can also be described by map reference points (geocoding), such as a set of latitudes and longitudes. This spatial referencing and the use of computer graphic display has many advantages over word-based indexing. Examples of the variation of geographic indexing terminology for on-line bibliographic records are given.

    Abstract
Reports on research into the use of new technologies in providing more sophisticated delivery systems where the services of skilled reference librarians are not available. Describes a workstation equipped with a CD-ROM jukebox of reference books and vocabulary control tools on laser discs with keyword access. The user interface will include an expert system to guide users in selecting the types of material and in developing the best search strategy by mapping the terms selected by the users to contolled vocabularies. Searches will be narrowed or broadened as appropriate. The system will also be designed to connect to a full service integrated library network enabling the user to access the on-line card catalogue, check circulation and perform interlibrary loans.

    Abstract
Offers a personal look back at the origins and early use of associative search techniques, and also a look forward at more theoretical approaches to the document retrieval problems. The purpose is to contrast the following 2 different ways of improving system performance: appending associative search techniques to more or less standard (conventional) document retrieval systems; and designing document retrieval systems based on more fundamental and appropriate principles namely probabilistic design principles. Very recent work on probabilistic approaches to the document retrieval problem has provided a new (and rare) unification of 2 previously competing models. In light of this, argues that if we had to choose the best way to improve performance of a document retrieval system, it would be wiser to implement, test, and evaluate this new unified model, rather than to continue to use associative techniques which are coupled to conventionally designed retrieval systems

    Abstract
Despite the popularity of fiction in libraries, little has been done to analyse systematically the criteria that fiction readers use when selecting books. Describes and evaluates several fiction sclassification systems from the perspective of how well they answer likely reader queries regarding the subject of a novel. Examines the 2-faceted 'levels-of-access' concept that is the common point of reference in all comparisons. Discusses classification schemes in terms of theri utility for browsing, subject headings for card catalogues, and printed indexes. Also discusses the provision of multifaceted subject access through on-line fiction cataloguing. Suggests further investigation of levels of access

    Abstract
Reviews the cumulative index to LISA, the leading English language abstracting journal on librarianship and information science and maintains that the index is a vital reference tool for those who do not have access to an on-line search service. Dascribes the index which is arranged in sequences of name and subject. Maintains that the introduction could be longer as the name index in particular requires more explanation, and illustrates by means of axamples. Lists strengths and weaknesses of the name index. Asserts that the subject index will receive greater use and warrants some explanation which is not provided. Suggests that the value of chain indexing is negated by divorce from classification. Affirms the enormous value of the work as an indispensable reference tool

    Abstract
An assessment of B.C. Vickery's contribution to the development of classification for retrieval. This has been both practical anf intellectual. On the practical side his work in the early CRG and elsewhere enhanced the status of classification for retrieval as a significant field of study. On the intellectual side he demonstrated the use of his own elaborated version of Ranganathan's facets for the purposes of western special libraries.. He analysed the ssential features of retrieval systems generally as the required framework within which classification could usefully play a part. The paper discusses some remaining 'grey areas' in faceted classification, classificatory fragments implicit in many thesauri, and the value for expository purposes of a mildly polemic approach to issues in classification

    Abstract
NISO draft standard Z39.50 (sometimes called the "Linked Systems Protocol") provides a standard for linking computers to permit the searching and retrieval of machine-readable bibliographic and authority records. The concept, context, status, and potential of the Linked Systems Protocol are reviewed in relation to the historical development of bibliographies and library catalogs. The functions of a fully developed bibliographic Linked Systems Protocol are summarized and shown to have extensive implications for scholarship, bibliographic access, and the notion of a national database. Effective international use of such a protocol would require the solution of several traditional problems.

    Abstract
Free text and controlled vocabulary searching can no longer be viewed as antagonistic techniques in information retrieval since they both display advantages and weaknesses dependent on a fairly wide range of context, with the option to use both increasingly favoured. An attempt is made to present a list of features associated with the two techniques and to suggest a methodology to assist in deciding on the optimal retrieval technique for a particular purpose. The relevance of the techniques in expert systems and full text contexts is also discussed. Finally, recommendations for further research are suggested, concentrating on survey techniques in real-life retrieval situations

    Abstract
The distinction between subjective and objective relevance of a document to a request, athough heretofore given little explicit recognition, is of importance to information retrieval as well as to certain broader issues in librarianship. Objective relevance is crucial to the design and testing of bibliographic retrieval systems, while subjective relevance is paramount in the operation and use of such sustems. The distinction provides a rationale for a trial-and error mode of interaction with libraries, online databases, and other information systems. The concept of objective relevance introduced here is illuminated by earlier work on logical relevance by Patrick Wilson and William Cooper

    Abstract
Pro-Cite is a software package for managing personal bibliographic data bases from which printed bibliographies are frequently required. Condisers the kinds of project for which Pro-Cite is intended, and those for which it is not intended. In the latter category is included the management of large permanent data bases to which powerful online access is frequently required. Its strength lies in its specialisation: it provides pre-defined data structures for various kinds of printed and audiovisual output formats corresponding to a range of standard styles. Discusses the package under the following headings: editing, searching, printing and browsing, indexing, and sorting. Examnines the use of Biblio-Links which are reformatting devices used to convert downloaded on-line serch results to Pro-Cite format

    Abstract
Contribution to a thematic issue devoted to subject control in on-line catalogues. In contrast with data base searching, the use of an OPAC is direct, without intermediaries and without prior training. This tool allows decentralised information access, 1st in the library and now directly from users' homes. In France MINITEL has made distributed access possible. Outlines the French authority list, RAMEAU (Répertoire d'Autorité Matière Encyclopédique et Alphabétique Unifié) giving details or its users and describes searching the system and the search software, ALEXIS. ALEXIS can serve as an example of the direction to take since it was developed within the perspective of natural language queries.
