    Abstract
Survey on the activities going to develop the UDC into a fully faceted classification system according to the Recommendations of the UDC Management Board. A Master Reference File (MRF) has been created from which any publisher or insitution may develop its own versions according to the requests of its clientele. The UDC Technical Director at the FID Headquarters in The Hague maintains the file. An Editorial Board and an Editor in Chief was appointed. Extensions and Corrections are being published. Examples are given on ongoing revision work in the classes for Astronomy, Linguistics and Philology as well as in Medicine. Cooperation with the Editors of the Bliss Classification and the DDC exists

    Abstract
The ways in which notation can be used to express the content of documents to which it relates are various. At the most superficial level notation can correspond to the hierarchical structure of the schedules or link to literal components. The notation of compound concepts can express the structure and composition of the compound, and systems exist in which symbols denote the functional roles of the constituent elements and the relationships between them. At the highest level notation can be used to mirror the actual structure of those entities which it represents, as in the case of mathematical systems or chemical compounds. Methods of displaying these structures are examined, and the practicality in a documentary context is questioned, with particular reference to recent revision work on the chemistry class of the Bliss Bibliographic Classification 2nd edition (BC2)

    Abstract
Reviews the ideas and achievements of Henry E. Bliss concerning his Bliss Classification Scheme (BC), based on material in the Henry E. Bliss Papers at Columbia University, New York. Describes his views on various aspects of classification: its function; arrangements; adaptability; and notation. Discusses the role and qualifications of classification staff. Notes the advantages and disadvantages of standard systems, including: LCC, DDC, and UDC. Explores the origins, evolution, publication, and impact of the original BC and its relationship to the radical revision of the BC, 2nd ed.

    Abstract
Publication of the 2nd ed. of the Bliss Bibliographic Classification presents librarians with a fresh opportunity to reassess the nature and benefits of helpful order for their collections and records. Half the parts are now available, exhibiting major expansion, revision, and development of the scheme. The new edition is sponsored by the Bliss Classification Association which welcomes the views and inputs of American librarians. It has been applied to libraries and information centers and used in thesaurus construction. This edition provides intensive subject specifity through detailed term listings and full synthetic capability. The notation is designed to be as brief as possible for the detail attainable. The classification allows a large measure of flexibility in arrangement and syntax

    Abstract
The experience of the British Classification Research Group (CRG) suggests that a good general scheme could be compiled by integrating specialist schemes. Examples are given from the 1990 revision of class J Education of the Bliss Bibliographic Classification. Sequences in arrays may need adjustment to suit different needs, but a general, or "Ur-Classification" will provide a reservoir of terms for specialist schemes, while the special schemes provide detailed analysis and emuneration by experts in each field. A fraction of money spent on new library buildings would enable the compilation of such a general scheme, which could well be based on the BC2 edition of Bliss B.C.

    Abstract
Development of the 2nd edition of the Bliss Bibliographic Classification (BC2) is outlined. The scope of the Introduction volume is described. Parts already issued, those ready for publication, and those awaiting completion are listed. The level of detail of the vocabulary is indicated. Four forms of synthesis are explained: addition of common subdivisions, facet combination including alternative combination patterns, array combination, and drawing marks from other parts of the system. Notational features which contribute to the relatively brief classmarks are identified. Different kinds of alternative location of subjects are discerned and examples provided. The potential feature of phenomenon-based classification is noted. Present use of the scheme is summarized and documented and its future application suggested.

    Abstract
This article pertains to two further general classifications, which, in contrast to the reigning classifications just mentioned, incorporate in a thoroughgoing manner a modem view of the world. One of these was announced in 1910, to a chorus of disapproval, saw the light of day as a completed scheme in 1935, fell into suspended animation after the death of its author in the 1950s, and was revived, drastically revised and expanded in England by Jack Mills in 1967. A large part of the expanded scheme has appeared in the form of separately published fascicles; the remainder mostly in the areas of science and technology are in an advanced state of preparation. I refer of course to the Bliss Bibliographic Classification. I use the expression "of course" with some slight hesitation having once met a North American library school academic who thought that Henry Evelyn Bliss was an Englishman who lived in the London inner suburb of Islington. This was an unconscious tribute to Jack Mills, though perhaps unfair to Bliss himself, not to mention America, whose son he was.

    Abstract
Though the idea of phase relation was first initiated in documentary classification by UDC in 1899, most of the other schemes either ignored the problem or tried to solve it through enumeration. Bliss followed the latter method in his Bibliographic classification (BC1). It was left to Ranganathan to further develop the idea and give it concrete shape in his Colon Classification (CC). BC2, in 1977, adopted an analytico-synthetic approach instead of the enumerative method. Attempts to establish the impact of CC on BC in this regard through comparison of the 2 schemes

    Abstract
In relation to indexing, one of the chief implications of cognitive epistemology is the necessity for redefining knowledge representation concepts for information filing and retrieval purposes. Such a redefinition involves abandoning the traditional, hierarchical, closed-structure classification model. Considers the following in detail: a semiotic critique of classification principles; Ranganathan's classification theory; Ranganathan and cognitive epistemology; and some reflections on the DDC and the Bliss Bibliographic Classification
