    Abstract
The training of librarians in content analysis undergoes influences resulting both from the realities existing in the various application fields and from technological innovations. The present contribution attempts to identify components of such training that are necessary for a future-oriented instruction, and it stresses the importance of furnishing a sound theoretical basis, especially in the light of technological developments. Purpose of the training is to provide the foundation for 'action competence' on the part of the students

    Abstract
Cataloguing has always depended on choices made by non cataloguers and it has been driven by technology. Technological innovations expand the range of materials requiring bibliographic control and also improve the quality of that control. In the near future, economic factors will constrain opportunities to continue improving quality. Technological factors will continue to broaden demands on cataloguers. Inability to continue expanding the revenue streams of supporting institutions will limit cataloguer's efforts while rapid growth of information bearing technology, particularly on networks, will inflate demands for cataloguing. Librarians must develop expanded skills with automation networks and modern software systems if they are to maintain control

    Abstract
MARC is now more than 20 years old. It has been, and still is, criticized from different point of view. Reviews some of the positive and negative opinions on MARC, as expressed by different sectors of the profession, and studies the future of MARC in relation to technological innovations. Concludes that MARC remains a valuable means of communicating bibliographical information

    Abstract
The MARC machine readable catalogue is now more than 20 years old. It has been, and still is, criticized from different points of view. Reviews some positive and negative opinions on MARC as expressed by different sectors of the profession, and considers its future in relation to technological innovations. MARC remains a valuable means of communicating bibliographical information

    Abstract
This article deals with technological and innovation processes, and the economic benefits in a region with open borderlines as part of a national innovation and economic system. Innovations and technologies compete for resources in an environment characterized by economic scarcity. Ultimately, the technology most suited to the times and the regional conditions triumphs. The article focuses the (present) innovative structures in industry in a selected region of Germany (i.e., the federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg) and provides new scientometric data on the (present) contribution of public institutions to technological development in the region under scutiny. This article concludes with a synopsis of present structures and a new information database on future technologies, thereby pointing out the regional challenges originating from structural change

    Abstract
Technological and regulatory developments are opening the door for competition and new services in the local loop. The reunification of Germany created an opprotunity for Deutsche Telekom to install fibre in the loop on a large scale in eastern Germany. Deutsche Telekom's strategy consists of 4 steps: fibre in the loop is seen as a process innovation. New broadband services - product innovations - can be based on the process innovation. Only a sufficient number of installations will enable the industry to invest in new products. Besides the local networks equipped with fibre, there is an overlay network for the rapid delivery of fibre access for business customers. The experience gained in eastern Germany will be transferred to western Germany when tranforming its existing network structure

    Abstract
Challenges the mind sets that exist about cataloguing in libraries today by offereing arguments for new priorities based on a formula of blending the users' needs with the need for libraries to take a more proactive role in helping users find and use information relevant to their learning needs in a world of rapid and complex change. Argues that inhouse cataloguing is in decline due to the explosion of technological innovations and a high demand for new services pushing for a new order of priorities to ensure effective management at a time of shrinking resources. Focuses on examples from the university environment

    Abstract
The cornerstone of the British human-centred tradition lies in the notions of human machine symbiosis and socially useful technology. The contemporary tradition has its roots in the LUCAS PLAN of the 1970s and has been shaped by a number of European social and technological movements in Scandinavia, Germany, France, Ireland and Italy. The emergence of the information society places the human-centred debate in wider socio-economic and cultural contexts. Explores the shaping of the European dimension of the human-centred tradition and proposes a research agenda for social innovation for inclusive information society

    Abstract
While technological advances are constantly opening up possibilities for new formats and media, as well as the creation of more traditional products, and while the technology has been strongly promoted, little research has been conducted on the problems of using it cost effectively to create products or on testing and evaluating them: information management. Presents the findings from case studies in a range of business and institutions undertaken as part of a research programme designed to address both the practical and theoretical deficiencies

    Abstract
Reviews the origin of the information superhighway paradigm and the many resulting national initiatives, including the US National Information Infrastructure and the world wide global information infrastructure. Quotes the guiding principles, and presents a list of possible future services, together with an overview of the major technological avenues. Discusses the current prototype of the future universal information infrastructure. i.e. the Internet and the WWW. Discusses which requirements are currently satisfied by the Internet plus WWW combination, and which capabilities are not yet provided. Presents a possible scenario of evolution

    Abstract
Reports results of a longitudinal study of the impact of computer mediated communication (CMC) by students and staff of the Department of Communication and Information Studies, Queen Margaret College, Edinburgh over a 5 year period and the value they derived from it. Data covers levels and patterns of messaging as well as perceptions of, and attitudes towards, CMC activities. Despite rapid changes in technological capabilities, there was seen to be some stability of reactions to CMC, with students particularly valuing administrative and course orientated uses

    Abstract
Highlights problems associated with the preservation of digital information. Reports on the draft report of the Task Force on Archiving of Digital Information, commissioned by the Commission on Preservation and Access and the Research Libraries Group. The report sets out the key organization, technological, legal, and economic problems associated with digital preservation. Defines the critical issues that inhibit resolution of each identified problem, and makes recommendations for further action
