    Abstract
Discusses the development of cataloguing rules for audiovisual media in Austria in recent years, and the publication of ÖNORM A 2653, which encapsulates these rules, in 1991. Describes the main features of these rules; the concept of the audiovisual underlining them; their inclusion of unpublished material; the presence of content analysis in the bibliographic description, and the fact that they are aimed at computer cataloguing

    Abstract
Describes the evolution of subject access to works about individual corporate bodies in Anglo-American subject cataloguing practice and compares this with similar problems of works of individual biography. Explores the lack of comparable levels of subject access for the 2 classes of works. Automation may have been part of the problem, but through automated maintenance routines, it offers the best hope for a viable solution. Recommendations are made that would restore parity in level of subject access by using syndetic reference structure and preserving the principle of specific entry upon which most subject access systems in Anglo-American libraries are based

    Abstract
Discusses Austrian government policy on the information superhighway (ISH) since Aug. 94. The Austrian telecommunications infrastructure is far behind the standards of Europe. The Austrain PTT monopoly over the public telecommunications network is an obstacle to development. The rates for data services are still based on copper cable with transmission speeds of 9600 Kbps. Although there are various ISH initiatives in Austria, the gap between vision and reality is large. Describes the initiatives of the Austrian National Host and the Bureau for International Research and Technology Cooperation; the Austrian Platform for Telematic Applications; BNet (Burgenland); Telematik Initiative Wien; TELKIS Telekommunikationsinitiative Steiermark; Datahighway Upper Austria; Vorarlberger Telekommunikations GmbH; Telematik Initiative; Datenbahn Telecom GmbH (Salzburg); Ti-KOM (Tirol) and other initiatives

    Abstract
The important role of psychological research in the field of human-computer interaction is becoming more and more recognized. The principles of how to design a user-oriented system cannot be worked out without the knowledge of how users work with systems. The book containes 18 edited papers presented at the 6th Interdisciplinary Workshop on Informatics and Psychology in Schärding, Austria, May 1987 arranged in five sections. They cover different approaches such as: Human knowledge representation, action regulation and plan recognition, simulation of interaction, formal methods of describing mental models, system design and mental models, learning and mental models

    Abstract
Hyper-G, developed at the Graz University of Technology, Austria, is a 2nd generation hypermedia information system that aims to overcome the problems of the existing Internet interfaces such as the WWW, WAIS and gopher. It supports tools for structuring, maintaining, and serving heterogeneous multimedia data, guaratees automatic hyperlink consistency, supports hyperlinks among multimedia documents, offers full text retrieval, a Unix like security system, client gateways to gopher and Web browsers, includes seamless access to server technologies, and offers advanced navigation tools and the ability to manipulate information in multiple ways. It offers a genuine alternative to the WWW

    Abstract
Finally, Melvil Dewey fully revealed, in entertaining prose, built on rigorous and deep historical scholarship. This is the definitive biography we've missed for so long. It tells the story of an American archetype?a man imbued with the inventive curiosity, sexism, anti-Semitism, racism, type-A control-freakishness, and reform zeal so characteristic of the power brokers of his time and his nation. The result is a masterpiece of history. It appropriately bears the imprint of the library association he founded and nurtured and which was enlisted for years to coconspire to cover up the darker side of the old boy. Wiegand's (a Dewey historian) penetrating, provocative interpretations add to the readability and pleasure of this fine biography, even his highly arguable view that the persistence of Dewey's design for librarianship means it "will likely remain a marginal profession." To this member of the small club of holders of jobs Dewey once held, it is obvious that Wiegand's work can be used to make the opposite case as well: that it was Dewey who gave librarianship any hope at all of becoming central to modern American society. Either way, you should own and read this brilliant, comprehensive study of the biased crackpot genius to whom we librarians owe so much.?
