    Abstract
Describes an experiment comparing the performance of automatic full-text indexing software for personal computers with the human intellectual assignment of indexing terms in each document in a collection. Considers the times required to index the document, to retrieve documents satisfying 5 typical foreseen information needs, and the recall and precision ratios of searching. The software used is QuickFinder facility in WordPerfect 6.1 for Windows

    Abstract
Considers whether, when there is a choice, a back-of-book indexer should use a duplicate entry or a see reference. Guidelines suggest that it is preferable to use the duplicate entry if it would not add to the length or complexity of the index. Studies 1.100 see references in 202 back-of-book indexes and concludes that 22% of the see references should have been replaced by duplicate entries. Failure to select a duplicate entry instead of a see reference occurs most frequently in science and techology books and in indexes with no subheadings

    Abstract
Examines the use of networked information sources in scholarly communication. Networked information sources are defined broadly to cover: documents and images stored on electronic network hosts; data files; newsgroups; listservs; online information services and electronic periodicals. Reports results of a survey to determine how heavily, if at all, networked information sources are cited in scholarly printed periodicals published in 1993 and 1994. 27 printed periodicals, representing a wide range of subjects and the most influential periodicals in their fields, were identified through the Science Citation Index and Social Science Citation Index Journal Citation Reports. 97 articles were selected for further review and references, footnotes and bibliographies were checked for references to networked information sources. Only 2 articles were found to contain such references. Concludes that, although networked information sources facilitate scholars' work to a great extent during the research process, scholars have yet to incorporate such sources in the bibliographies of their published articles

    Abstract
Visualization interfaces can improve subject access by highlighting the inclusion of document representation components in similarity and discrimination relationships. Within a set of retrieved documents, what kinds of groupings can index terms and subject headings make explicit? The role of controlled vocabulary in classifying search output is examined

    Abstract
Considers the principles of indexing and the intellectual skills involved in order to determine what automatic indexing systems would be required in order to supplant or complement the human indexer. Good indexing requires: considerable prior knowledge of the literature; judgement as to what to index and what depth to index; reading skills; abstracting skills; and classification skills, Illustrates these features with a detailed description of abstracting and indexing processes involved in generating entries for the mechanical engineering database POWERLINK. Briefly assesses the possibility of replacing human indexers with specialist indexing software, with particular reference to the Object Analyzer from the InTEXT automatic indexing system and using the criteria described for human indexers. At present, it is unlikely that the automatic indexer will replace the human indexer, but when more primary texts are available in electronic form, it may be a useful productivity tool for dealing with large quantities of low grade texts (should they be wanted in the database)

    Abstract
Aims to provide an accurate and comprehensive bibliographic description of Canadian science fiction and fantasy literature in english language pulp magazines published between 1896 and 1955, a fragile and increasingly elusive periodical genre which contains a virtually unknown selection of popular fiction and art by Canadians. The arrangement is alphabetical under the following headings: author index; title index; artist index; magazine index; and series index

    Abstract
The Science Citation Index Compact Disc Edition (SCI CDE) is a multidisciplinary database providing complete bibliographic information on cited references for each article, meeting, abstract, editorial, review, footnote and letter. Trough a CD-ROM version produced by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), the related records feature enables extended cross referencing. Describes ISI's improvements to searching the databses, covering the search engine and by comparing CSI CDE with MEDLINE on CD-ROM. Assesses SCI CDE's special options and documentation

    Abstract
Reviews the Web of Science, a new Web interface to the citation indexes produced by ISI. The Web of Science carries the past 10 years of ISI's 3 major citation indexes: AHCI, SSCI, and SCI. Combined, the 3 indexes provide access to article citations from about 8.000 journals and over 10 million records. Topics covered in the review include: pricing; searching in 2 modes: Quick Search and Full Search; lateral searching and citation matching; document delivery; full text; and documentation and help. Provides a list of selected databases that link to full text, a facility not yet available on the Web of Science

    Abstract
Investigates the characteristics of Journal Citation Reports (JCR) through the study of the Science Citation Index (SCI). Other criteria for evaluating a journal are also discussed. The compilation process of SCI data, and the characteristics, applications and limitations of SCI are studied. A detailed description of JCR is provided including: journal ranking listing, citing journal listing, cited journal listing, subject category listing, source data, impact factor, immediacy index, cited half-life and citing half-life. The applications and limitations of JCR are also explored. In addition to the criteria listed in JCR, the size, circulation and influence of journals are also considered significant criteria fir evaluation purposes

    Abstract
Reviews Science Citation Index CDE (compact disc edition) with abstracts, which is published by the Institute for Scientific Information. It indexes 3.300 national and international scientific and technical journals, offering cited references for each article and the ability to search by related records. With a year's subscription costing $ 14.783, the CD is priced for only the largest libraries and corporate research facilities. For smaller libraries it would be cheaper and more current to go online
