    Abstract
Reports on the Workshop on Intelligent Adaptive Agents, part of the 13th National conference on Artificial Intelligence (AAI-96) which presented state-of-the art methodologies for research and development of intelligent adaptive agents and defined initial boundaries, criteria and acceptable characteristics of the field. Discusses definitions of an agent, summarizes issues discussed at the workshop, and the presented talks and presentations

    Abstract
Presents a brief overview of the structure of expert systems and the main features of intelligent agent software. Discusses the potential uses for intelligent agents and assistants in the following library and information centre activities: information retrieval and catalogue searching; reference services; referral services, such as to distance education students; indexing and abstracting; collection development and acquisition; classification of library materials; and library education. Few intelligent agents are commercially available at present but this should change over the next few years

    Abstract
Proposes the development of an 'intelligent document' as a key component of the future electronic library; in which the intelligent documents in a library collection may be thought of as the ability of documents or a collection of documents to adapt to differing characteristics of individual information seekers and users. Proposes the sort of intelligent document that could: identify particular learning strategies being used by individual users; classify them in terms of a model of learning capable of making explicit relationships between strategies, individual differences, learning tasks, and learning outcomes; and offer, on the basis of this model, individualized strategic advice (or take individualized strategic action) relating to how the user might most productively go forward. Describes results obtained during the study, conducted at the Department of Information Studies, Sheffield University, UK, involving PRECIS documents, fuzzy data analysis and artificial neural networks

    Abstract
Reviews the Autonomy intelligent search agent for the Internet. The system searches for Internet sites based on a description of the search problem, the user selects suitable documents and the search is retained using this selection. The evaluation indicates that Autonomy is not suited to ad hac one-off searches as it takes too long compared to more traditional search engines. Search agents could be used for monitoring the WWW, or searching newspapers

    Abstract
The growing complexity of sources of information and users' needs for information is fast outstripping the manual browsing and searching interfaces of the past. A long-term approach to the complexity problem is to design intelligent information agents that provide active assistance in the process of finding and organizing information. These agents differ from conventional information retrieval in how they interact with the user and the dynamic nature of the information they deal with. This article surveys some work at the MIT Media Lab in developing intelligent informations, especially as assistants to users browsing the Web. These agents don't replace conventional browsing or direct manipulation interfaces, but work with such interfaces to learn from interaction with the user, anticipate the user's needs, and connect the user with othe people who may share his or her interests

    Abstract
This paper is based on the project work carries out by the authors at DRTC. Knowledge representation models are used in building intelligent systems for problem solving. The paper discusses, a frame based knowledge representation model built for automatic indexing. The system assigns POPSI indicators and produces subject strings for titles. The results are given in appendices

    Abstract
Knowledge engineering has been used to design an intelligent interface for the Juris-Data database, 1 of the largest case study databases in France. It was based on the legal classification elaborated by the Juris-Data group to index the cases. The system aims to to help users find the case study most relevant to their own. A methodology for the construction of legal classification of the primary document was designed together with a framework for index construction. This led to the implementation of a Legal Case Studies Engineering Framework based on the accumulated experimentation and the methodologies designed. It consists of a set of computerized tools which support the life cycle of the legal document from their processing by legal experts to their consultation by clients
