    Abstract
    Der Gemeinsame Bibliotheksverbund (GBV) wird heute von den sieben Bundesländern Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Niedersachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein und Thüringen getragen. Sitz der Verbundzentrale des GBV ist Göttingen. Dem GBV gehören die Staats-, Landes- und Hochschulbibliotheken der beteiligten Länder sowie die Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin - Preußischer Kulturbesitz, zahlreiche öffentliche Bibliotheken und Spezialbibliotheken an. Insgesamt beteiligen sich über 400 Bibliotheken aktiv am Verbund. Der Weg des GBV ist geprägt von der permanenten Anpassung der Aufgaben und Perspektiven der Verbundarbeit an die Entwicklungen im bibliothekarischen Umfeld. Ausgehend von der reinen Verbundkatalogisierung wurde dieses Aufgabenfeld sehr schnell um Online-Fernleihe, Unterstützung lokaler Bibliothekssysteme und Endbenutzerdienste erweitert. Mit Einführung des Pica-Systems in Niedersachsen wurde bereits Anfang der neunziger Jahre internationale Zusammenarbeit zur Selbstverständlichkeit. Mit Zusammenschluss von sieben Bundesländern zu einem Verbund mußten dann auch Verbundstruktur und Organisation den Erfordernissen einer länderübergreifenden Kooperation angepasst werden. Der vorliegende Beitrag beschreibt diese Entwicklung und den heute erreichten Stand der Verbundarbeit. Ausgehend davon wird versucht, eine Einschätzung der künftigen Perspektiven des GBV hinsichtlich der traditionellen Verbundarbeit und den sich abzeichnenden Tendenzen einer globalen Zusammenarbeit aller an der Informationsversorgung in Forschung und Lehre beteiligten Einrichtungen und Organisationen aufzuzeigen.

Seit neuestem bietet Google, in Zusammenarbeit rnit Verlagen, unter http://scholar.google.com/ eine auf wissenschaftliche Publikationen spezialisierte Version seiner Suchmaschine an. Das Motto: "Stand an the shoulders of giants." Obwohl noch als "beta" ausgewiesen. fallen erste Tests beeindruckend aus: umfassend und tatsächlich ausschliesslich auf wissenschaftliche Arbeiten beschränkt. Sortiert wird nach einem aus gegenseitiger Zitation gewonnenen Index, ähnlich zu Googles "Page Rank". Wenn sich diese Qualität halten und ausbauen lässt, haben wir die Geburtsstunde eines weiteren wichtigen Instruments wissenschaftlicher Literaturrecherche und -Versorgung erlebt.

Oberhauser): " Dieses nunmehr in vierter Auflage vorliegende Werk ist - vor allem in der angelsächsischen Welt - bereits zu einem Standardlehrtext für Studenten informationswissenschaftlicher Studiengänge geworden. Es zeichnete sich stets durch klaren Aufbau, gute Lesbarkeit und eine bei aller Knappheit doch relativ umfassende Themenbehandlung aus. Der im Titel verwendete Begriff organizing knowledge steht hier ja nicht für mögliche engere Bedeutungen wie etwa Wissensrepräsentation oder gar Klassifikation, sondern für den gesamten Themenbereich information retrieval bzw. information management. Die beiden ersten Auflagen verfasste die versierte und produktive Lehrbuchautorin Jennifer Rowley noch alleine;1 erst bei der dritten Auflage (2000) stand ihr John Farrow (2002 verstorben) als Mitautor zur Seite.2 Inzwischen zur Professorin am Department of Information and Communications der Manchester Metropolitan University avanciert, konnte Rowley nunmehr für die neueste Auflage den ebenfalls als Lehrbuchautor erfahrenen Richard Hartley, Professor am selben Institut und überdies dessen Vorstand, als zweiten Verfasser gewinnen. Wie die Autoren in der Einleitung ausführen, wurde das Buch gegenüber der letzten Auflage stark verändert. Die Neuerungen spiegeln insbesondere die anhaltende Verschiebung hin zu einer vernetzten und digitalen Informationswelt wider, mit allen Konsequenzen dieser Entwicklung für Dokumente, Information, Wissen, Informationsdienste und Benutzer. Neue bzw. stark überarbeitete Themenbereiche sind u.a. Ontologien und Taxonomien, Informationsverhalten, digitale Bibliotheken, Semantisches Web, Evaluation von Informationssystemen, Authentifizierung und Sicherheit, Veränderungsmanagement. Der Text wurde revidiert und auch, was diverse Standards und Normen betrifft, auf den aktuellen Stand gebracht. Der in der dritten Auflage noch separate Abschnitt über das Internet und seine Anwendungen wurde zugunsten einer Integration dieser Themen in die einzelnen Kapitel aufgelassen. Das Buch wurde neu gegliedert - es weist jetzt zwölf Kapitel auf, die in drei grosse Abschnitte gruppiert sind. Jedes Kapitel beginnt mit einer kurzen Einleitung, in der die beabsichtigten Lehr- bzw. Lernziele vorgestellt werden. Am Kapitelende gibt es jeweils eine Zusammenfassung, einige (Prüfungs-)Fragen zum Stoff sowie eine nicht allzu lange Liste der zitierten bzw. zur Vertiefung empfohlenen Literatur. Diese durchgehende Strukturierung erleichtert die Lektüre und Rezeption der Inhalte und ist m.E. für einen Lehrtext besonders vorteilhaft.

    Abstract
    Da nur 10 bis 30% der Erfindungen in anderen Quellen als in Patentschriften beschrieben werden, ist die Patentinformation für die Kenntnis des Weltstandes der Technik und seiner wirtschaftlichen Verwertungsbedingungen unersetzlich. Die aktuelle und vollständige Information über den Stand der Technik verdanken Wissenschaft, Technik und Wirtschaft dem Grundprinzip des Patentwesens: Das Patentwesen verhindert die Geheimhaltung technischen Wissens, indem es den Erfinder und Patentinhaber für die Preisgabe der Information rechtlich schützt, d.h. es verknüpft Technik und Recht aufwirtschaftsstimulierende Weise. Der daraus resultierende Doppelcharakter einer Patentschrift als Technik- und Rechtsdokument ist keine lästige Erschwernis, sondern ein zu nutzender Vorzug. Noch führt die ungenügende Kenntnis der Patentinformation zu unnötiger Doppelforschung und zu zurückgewiesenen Patentanmeldungen. Ein Drittel der Forschung und der Patentanmeldungen erfolgt nutzlos. Die Patentinformation kann - gestützt auf Patentdatenbanken und Volltextarchive in weltweiten und lokalen Informationsnetzen - einen wachsenden Beitrag an der Entwicklung und Markteinführung innovativer Produkte und Verfahren leisten.
