    Abstract

    Abstract
By the explosion of possibilities for a ubiquitous content production, the information overload problem reaches the level of complexity which cannot be managed by traditional modelling approaches anymore. Due to their pure syntactical nature traditional information retrieval approaches did not succeed in treating content itself (i.e. its meaning, and not its representation). This leads to a very low usefulness of the results of a retrieval process for a user's task at hand. In the last ten years ontologies have been emerged from an interesting conceptualisation paradigm to a very promising (semantic) modelling technology, especially in the context of the Semantic Web. From the information retrieval point of view, ontologies enable a machine-understandable form of content description, such that the retrieval process can be driven by the meaning of the content. However, the very ambiguous nature of the retrieval process in which a user, due to the unfamiliarity with the underlying repository and/or query syntax, just approximates his information need in a query, implies a necessity to include the user in the retrieval process more actively in order to close the gap between the meaning of the content and the meaning of a user's query (i.e. his information need). This thesis lays foundation for such an ontology-based interactive retrieval process, in which the retrieval system interacts with a user in order to conceptually interpret the meaning of his query, whereas the underlying domain ontology drives the conceptualisation process. In that way the retrieval process evolves from a query evaluation process into a highly interactive cooperation between a user and the retrieval system, in which the system tries to anticipate the user's information need and to deliver the relevant content proactively. Moreover, the notion of content relevance for a user's query evolves from a content dependent artefact to the multidimensional context-dependent structure, strongly influenced by the user's preferences. This cooperation process is realized as the so-called Librarian Agent Query Refinement Process. In order to clarify the impact of an ontology on the retrieval process (regarding its complexity and quality), a set of methods and tools for different levels of content and query formalisation is developed, ranging from pure ontology-based inferencing to keyword-based querying in which semantics automatically emerges from the results. Our evaluation studies have shown that the possibilities to conceptualize a user's information need in the right manner and to interpret the retrieval results accordingly are key issues for realizing much more meaningful information retrieval systems.

    Abstract
Presents an overview of the concepts, techniques and tools of knowledge organization. Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS), such as, authority files, glossaries, dictionaries, subject headings lists, classification schemes, taxonomies, categorization schemes, thesauri, semantic networks, ontologies, etc are involved in organizing, retrieval and dissemination of information. Specifically, KOS are useful -in Users Needs Assessment, Database(s) creation, Online systems, OPAC and for generation of information services and products. Practical experiences suggest that new information systems to access a wider range, quantity, and forms of information and enable provision of a variety of information services and products to meet the needs of people, KOS can perform functions even in an electronic/digital environment as efficiently and effectively as in a traditional library environment. Hence, it is necessary that information professionals and computer-scientists work in an integrated manner to enhance information handling operations in electronic/digital libraries.

    Abstract
The Decision Tree Forest (DTF) is an architecture for information retrieval that uses a separate decision tree for each document in a collection. Experiments were conducted in which DTFs working with the incremental tree induction (ITI) algorithm of Utgoff, Berkman, and Clouse (1997) were trained and evaluated in the medical and word processing domains using the Cystic Fibrosis and SIFT collections. Performance was compared with that of a conventional inverted index system (IIS) using a BM25-derived probabilistic matching function. Initial results using DTF were poor compared to those obtained with IIS. We then simulated scenarios in which large quantities of training data were available, by using only those parts of the document collection that were well covered by the data sets. Consequently, the retrieval effectiveness of DTF improved substantially. In one particular experiment, precision and recall for DTF were 0.65 and 0.67 respectively, values that compared favorably with values of 0.49 and 0.56 for IIS.

    Abstract
Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), a system originally designed as a tool for subject access to the Library's own collection in the late nineteenth century, has become, in the course of the last century, the main subject retrieval tool in library catalogs throughout the United States and in many other countries. It is one of the largest non-specialized controlled vocabularies in the world. As LCSH enters a new century, it faces an information environment that has undergone vast changes from what had prevailed when LCSH began, or, indeed, from its state in the early days of the online age. In order to continue its mission and to be useful in spheres outside library catalogs as well, LCSH must adapt to the multifarious environment. One possible approach is to adopt a series of scalable and flexible syntax and application rules to meet the needs of different user communities

    Abstract
Most of the retrieval systems concentrate much on low-level features such as color, texture, shape and position. The present system is mainly developed based on the visual descriptors of the image such as color, texture and shape descriptors, etc. along with the high-level semantic analysis of the image content through different processing modules in the proposed architecture. Similarity measures are proposed and the performance evaluation has been done. As an image browser, apart from retrieving images by image example, it also supports query by natural language. The present system works well both online and offline. We have used unsupervised Kohonen's self-organizing maps (SOM) technique to train the images and our own indexing scheme with reference system based on R-tree SOM. We proposed an approach fuzzy color histogram for color retrieval, and Lie descriptors for the retrieval of shapes. We have also tested our appraoch for MPEG-7 images.
