    Abstract
The article discusses the construction of a controlled vocabulary for the indexing of petroleum and gas related articles in indigenous periodicals and newspapers in the library system of the Nigerian National Corporation (NNPC). The major problems encountered in the design of the subject heading list are highlighted and solutions offered. Attention is also drawn to neologisms as they apply to the controlled vocabulary under consideration.

    Abstract
With the availability of full-text journals in CD-ROM and aggregator databases, libraries need to provide bibliographic and online access to these titles through the OPAC. The article reviews the experience of the King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals Library in providing analytical cataloging to the journal-title level of full-text CD-ROM databases, including Business Periodicals Ondisc (BPO), IEEE/ IEE Electronic Library (IEL), Applied Science & Technology Plus (AS&TP), and Readers' Guide Abstracts (RGA).

    Abstract
For almost 20 years, the National Bibliographic Network (Red Nacional de Información Bibliográfica (RENIB)) has been the driving force of library networking and resource sharing in Chile. Administratively dependent on the National Library (Biblioteca Nacional) and also physically located on its premises, RENIB has been very successful in bringing together librarians from most of the major Chilean libraries and in obtaining their cooperation for a number of important joint projects. The most important among these was the development of the national union catalog, which provides access to the holdings of all member libraries. An earlier project resulted in the online union list of periodicals, developed jointly with the National Commission of Scientific and Technological Research (Comisión Nacional de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica (CONICYT)), which contains periodical records and detailed holdings data of twenty-four universities. As the bibliographic database was being planned, RENIB personnel anticipated the need for a centralized authorities database in order to maintain consistency and uniform standards. Participating libraries provided expert staff members who work jointly with RENIB in teams that build and maintain headings for names, subjects, series, uniform titles, and subdivisions and resolve conflicts. RENIB provided documentation and training and, especially, the organizational structure that now allows for continuing cooperation among institutions that, traditionally, had not worked together.

    Abstract
The international standard ISO 214:1976 defines an abstract as "an abbreviated, accurate representation of the contents of a document" (p. 1) that should "enable readers to identify the basic content of a document quickly and accurately to determine relevance" (p. 1). It also should be useful in computerized searching. The ISO standard suggests including the following elements: purpose, methods, results, and conclusions. Researchers have often challenged this structure and found that different disciplines and cultures prefer different information content. These claims are partially supported by the findings of our research into the structure of pharmacology, sociology, and Slovenian language and literature abstracts of papers published in international and Slovenian scientific periodicals. The three disciplines have different information content. Slovenian pharmacology abstracts differ in content from those in international periodicals while the differences between international and Slovenian abstracts are small in sociology. In the field of Slovenian language and literature, only domestic abstracts were studied. The identified differences can in part be attributed to the disciplines, but also to the different role of journals and papers in the professional society and to differences in perception of the role of abstracts. The findings raise questions about the structure of abstracts required by some publishers of international journals.

    Abstract
The article focuses on the EBSCO databases that provide services to libraries. The Library, Information Science and Technology Abstracts (LISTA) include resources focusing on librarianship, classification, cataloging, bibliometrics, online information retrieval, and information science. LISTA has more than 21,000 articles from more than 600 periodicals and includes more than 5,000 conference papers and reports. In the database, there are also cited references and the number of times the source was used can also be found within the database. These are helpful tips in bibliography researching. The database has also several search options including "Basic Search," "Advanced Search," and Indexes." The EBSCOhost interface is simple to use and easy to grasp while LISTA is a free abstract database.

    Abstract
This paper presents a study that assessed the feasibility of applying the approach of the Faceted Application of Subject Terminology (FAST), an initiative of the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), to records in the Ulrich's Periodicals Directory.? The goal is to determine whether a simplified application of Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), as illustrated by FAST, would benefit the Ulrich's system. This feasibility study found that although a few problems were encountered in the process, overall the FAST database was useful for converting Ulrich's subject headings into FAST headings.

    Abstract
The goal of the scientometric analysis presented in this article was to investigate international and regional (i.e., German-language) periodicals in the field of library and information science (LIS). This was done by means of a citation analysis and a reader survey. For the citation analysis, impact factor, citing half-life, number of references per article, and the rate of self-references of a periodical were used as indicators. In addition, the leading LIS periodicals were mapped. For the 40 international periodicals, data were collected from ISI's Social Sciences Citation Index Journal Citation Reports (JCR); the citations of the 10 German-language journals were counted manually (overall 1,494 source articles with 10,520 citations). Altogether, the empirical base of the citation analysis consisted of nearly 90,000 citations in 6,203 source articles that were published between 1997 and 2000. The expert survey investigated reading frequency, applicability of the journals to the job of the reader, publication frequency, and publication preference both for all respondents and for different groups among them (practitioners vs. scientists, librarians vs. documentalists vs. LIS scholars, public sector vs. information industry vs. other private company employees). The study was conducted in spring 2002. A total of 257 questionnaires were returned by information specialists from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Having both citation and readership data, we performed a comparative analysis of these two data sets. This enabled us to identify answers to questions like: Does reading behavior correlate with the journal impact factor? Do readers prefer journals with a short or a long half-life, or with a low or a high number of references? Is there any difference in this matter among librarians, documentalists, and LIS scholars?

    Abstract
The Library of Congress Subjects Headings (and authority lists derived from LCSH) are used by the H. W. Wilson Company to index a wide variety of periodicals, including the most popular newsstand magazines, children's materials, trade magazines, professional journals, scholarly academic journals, and technical and scientific journals. The simple syndetic structure and subject-string grammar of LCSH are practical, pragmatic, and readily adaptable to periodical indexing. Some modifications are necessary, however. Not only does the material being indexed require specialized headings, but the various user groups, from children to lawyers, require various levels of language in subject access. Furthermore, because periodical articles are often on very narrow (or new) topics, periodical indexing requires much greater specificity (or currency) than LCSH usually provides
