    Rez. in: Knowledge organization 31(2004) no.2, S.112-114 (M.P. Satija) : "With nearly 130 years of eventful and checkered history, the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) is the oldest living yet thriving modern library classification. Having undergone 21 revisions, it is the most applied library classification structure all over the world. Apart from its use in libraries in more than 135 countries across six continents, many national and trade bibliographies use it for content organization. Furthermore, it is now making successful forays into the world of electronic documents and networked information. The print version of the 22nd edition was released in September 2003, two months later than the scheduled time of July 2003, and two months after the release of the electronic version, WebDewey. The period between print editions now seems settled to seven years as a matter of policy. As WebDewey, an the other hand, is updated an a quarterly basis, what really constitutes a new edition is problematic; edition is rolling, always in a flux without much fixity. The last half century, and more specifically the tenure of Benjamin A. Custer as editor (1956-1980; Editions 16-19), has been an era of structural changes in the DDC, backed by professional management and organizational planning. Custer was instrumental in not only resuscitating the system, but also in putting DDC back an the path of progress. His able successor, Dr. John P. Comaromi, edited the 20`h edition (1989) and ushered in a period of simplification and consolidation. Following the acquisition of Forest Press by OCLC in 1988, much more research has gone into making new editions of the DDC. The OCLC Office of Research has involved itself in classification research, especially in the harmonization of various knowledge classification systems and mapping of DDC numbers to subject headings, above all to make DDC capable of organizing electronic information of every sort. The acquisition of DDC by OCLC has also inaugurated an era of new products and services, along with organized marketing. DDC21 (1996) was a product of high IT, and the 22nd edition can safely be termed a child of network technology. It is indeed the first edition produced in the web environment. To stay abreast of current developments an knowledge practices, the editors relied an the Internet and electronic databases for new topics and terms. Editors and policy makes got constant feedback and suggestions via the Internet to add new features and to achieve accuracy and efficiency. In addition to the feedback and expert advice, this edition, as usual, is based an actual classification of three quarters of a million current books in the Decimal Classification Division of the Library of Congress since 1996.
    WebDewey (2003) and Abridged WebDewey (2004) are now only available an the Internet to licensed users. WebDewey is an enhanced version of the Dewey database of terms and numbers available in the print edition. Updated quarterly, it is only accessible via the Internet an an annual subscription basis. It provides much more facilities including key words navigation. Annotation feature allows cIassifiers to add and share notes about local classification changes. WebDewey is available within the full OCLC cataloguing services environment. It provides many access points with many search and browse Indexes. It makes the location of Dewey numbers an "easy" game. The annually updated Dewey for Windows an CD ceased publication in 2001; this decision may hurt the libraries in developing countries where the Internet, due to poor telecommunication infrastructure and unreliable services, is not easily accessible.
    Changes DDC22 is the second edition prepared by Joan S. Mitchell who took over as editor in 1993. It carries forward the policies and improvements started in DDC21, especially the onslaught an the Christian and western cultural blas in the schedules and tables. The plan for reducing Christian blas in 200 Religion, initiated in DDC21, has now been completed, with some additional provisions in 296 and 297. An outstanding change has been the abrogation of Table 7 Persons. The functions of Table 7 are now filled by using T1-08 and whatever notation is appropriate from 011-999. There are at least six places in the tables and 12 places in the schedules where the use of T7 was prescribed; what good the abolition of T7 has produced is not clear. In fact, it does make number building in some cases a bit circuitous, especially while using Table 3C. It has also resulted in the reuse of many DDC 21 numbers with new meanings. However, some numbers remain the same e.g., Social customs of artists 390.47 (both in DDC21 and DDC22). A few numbers have also become shorter in length. In compliance with the recommendations of D'Elia's survey, all works relating to directories of travel facilities such as hotels, lodges, Motels, inns, have been shifted to 910.46 and to 913/919 whereas 647.94 continues to be in place for general information about hotels. A common practice in previous editions, that is full class or extensive revisions (phoenix schedules), appear to have been discontinued in the preparation of DDC22. But minor changes are numerous. There are more than one thousand relocations and discontiuations of class numbers. Some 40 numbers have been reused. ... However, all these changes are not those projected as slated changes for DDC22 in the DDC21 (1996), namely in 520 Astronomy, 355-359 Military science, 636-639 Animal husbandry and 690 Buildings. Obviously the switch over to the DDC 22 will put less strain an libraries. There has been considerable improvement in the manual, now shifted to volume 1 of the print edition (pp. 1-182). Notes in the manual have been shortened by removing redundant information and by dividing them into smaller sections. Some information from the manual has been transferred to the schedules and tables, in the form of notes. The manual is now clearer and easier to read. Flow Charts, built-in numbers, and see also references should help classifiers achieve greater consistency. The relative index has been beefed up. With its 928 pages, it is 333 pages longer than the previous one, including new built-in numbers and many additional terms. The entry vocabulary is wide-based and current. DDC 22, the first edition of this millennium, has kept pace with the fast changing information environment to map and organize it squarely. To quote our friends at OCLC: knowledge is a big world, and they have organized it."

    Abstract
    The Decimal Classification Editorial Policy Committee (EPC) held its Meeting 117 at the Library Dec. 3-5, 2001, with chair Andrea Stamm (Northwestern University) presiding. Through its actions at this meeting, significant progress was made toward publication of DDC unabridged Edition 22 in mid-2003 and Abridged Edition 14 in early 2004. For Edition 22, the committee approved the revisions to two major segments of the classification: Table 2 through 55 Iran (the first half of the geographic area table) and 900 History and geography. EPC approved updates to several parts of the classification it had already considered: 004-006 Data processing, Computer science; 340 Law; 370 Education; 510 Mathematics; 610 Medicine; Table 3 issues concerning treatment of scientific and technical themes, with folklore, arts, and printing ramifications at 398.2 - 398.3, 704.94, and 758; Table 5 and Table 6 Ethnic Groups and Languages (portions concerning American native peoples and languages); and tourism issues at 647.9 and 790. Reports on the results of testing the approved 200 Religion and 305-306 Social groups schedules were received, as was a progress report on revision work for the manual being done by Ross Trotter (British Library, retired). Revisions for Abridged Edition 14 that received committee approval included 010 Bibliography; 070 Journalism; 150 Psychology; 370 Education; 380 Commerce, communications, and transportation; 621 Applied physics; 624 Civil engineering; and 629.8 Automatic control engineering. At the meeting the committee received print versions of _DC&_ numbers 4 and 5. Primarily for the use of Dewey translators, these cumulations list changes, substantive and cosmetic, to DDC Edition 21 and Abridged Edition 13 for the period October 1999 - December 2001. EPC will hold its Meeting 118 at the Library May 15-17, 2002.

    Abstract
    This paper presents the results of an exploratory study to determine literary warrant for topics in electronic resources. The classification numbers in Abridged Edition 14 were used as a starting point. Using the principles of abridgment and expansion in Dewey, a version of the DDC is defined that accommodates the topics found an three diverse Web sites that use Dewey: BUBL, Canadian Information By Subject, and KidsClick! The resulting classes are used to create a database for automated classification of Web resources.

    Abstract
    The DeweyBrowser allows users to search and browse collections of library resources organized by the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system. The visual interface provides access to several million records from the OCLC WorldCat database and to a collection of records derived from the abridged edition of DDC. The prototype was developed out of a desire to make the most of Dewey numbers assigned to library materials and to explore new ways of providing access to the DDC.

    Abstract
    A system of library classification that flashed across the inquiring mind of young Melvil Louis Kossuth Dewey (known as Melvil Dewey) in 1873 is still the most popular classification scheme.. The modern library classification begins with Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). Melvil Dewey devised DDC in 1876. DDC has is credit of 128 years of boudless success. The DDC is being taught as a practical subject throughout the world and it is being used in majority of libraries in about 150 countries. This is the result of continuous revision that 22nd Edition of DDC has been published in July 2003. No other classification scheme has published so many editions. Some welcome changes have been made in DDC 22. To reduce the Christian bias in 200 religion, the numbers 201 to 209 have been devoted to specific aspects of religion. In the previous editions these numbers were devoted to Christianity. to enhance the classifier's efficiency, Table 7 has been removed from DDC 22 and the provision of adding group of persons is made by direct use of notation already available in schedules and in notation -08 from Table 1 Standard Subdivision. The present book is an attempt to explain, with suitable examples, the salient provisions of DDC 22. The book is written in simple language so that the students may not face any difficulty in understanding what is being explained. The examples in the book are explained in a step-by-step procedure. It is hoped that this book will prove of great help and use to the library professionals in general and library and information science students in particular.

    "Am 11. und 12. Juni 2007 fand in der Schweizer Nationalbibliothek in Bern unter dem Titel: "EDUG 2007 - Die Verwendung der Dewey-Dezimalklassifikation (DDC) in Europa: Aktuelle Entwicklungen und Perspektiven für die Zukunft" das erste europäische DDC-Anwendertreffen in Europa statt (wobei 'EDUG' für European Dewey Users Group steht). Organisatoren der Tagung waren Elena Balzardi und Patrice Landry von der Schweizer Nationalbibliothek. Unter den 55 Teilnehmern, davon gut die Hälfte aus der Schweiz, waren u.a. Bibliothekarinnen und Bibliothekare aus Großbritannien, Frankreich, Italien, Griechenland, Schweden und Norwegen. Aus den USA war Joan Mitchell, die Herausgeberin der DDC zugegen, aus Deutschland u.a. Magda Heiner-Freiling (Deutsche Nationalbibliothek) und aus Österreich Karin Kleiber (Nationalbibliothek) und Rudolf Lindpointner (00. Landesbibliothek). Am ersten Tag standen verschiedene Präsentationen zur Arbeit mit der DDC in Europa auf der Tagesordnung. Thema der ersten Vorträge von Federica Paradisi (Florenz), Anne-Celine Lambotte (Paris) und Heidrun Alex (Frankfurt) war die Verwendung von Dewey in Italien, Frankreich und Deutschland, Erfahrungen und Problematiken in einzelnen Bereichen. So wird z.B. in der Bibliothèque nationale de France DDC seit 1992 für die Freihand-Aufstellung verwendet und seit 2000 auch für die Neuzugänge im Magazin vergeben. In der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek werden seit Bibliografiejahrgang 2007 die Reihen A (Monografien und Periodika des Verlagsbuchhandels), B (Monografien und Periodika außerhalb des Verlagsbuchhandels) und H (Hochschulschriften) der Deutschen Nationalbibliografie mit vollständigen DDC-Notationen erschlossen. Probleme gibt es generell in den Bereichen des Rechts, des Erziehungssystems und bei der Archäologie (die BNP vergibt hier z.B. gegen die Regeln einen geographischen Zusatz).
    Der dann folgende Vortrag von Joan Mitchell mit dem programmatischen Titel "Locality and universality in the DDC" gab zuerst einen Überblick über die laufenden Übersetzungsprojekte, bezogen auf die Ed. 22, nämlich: Französisch, Italienisch, Spanisch, Griechisch, Arabisch und Chinesisch. Bezogen auf die Abridged Ed. 14 außerdem: Hebräisch und Vietnamesisch. Sie erwähnte auch den Einsatz von Dewey bei internationalen Projekten wie der "World Digital Library". Der zentrale Punkt des Vortrags betraf dann den Spagat zwischen ,Localization and Interoperability', d.h. zwischen Anpassung an regionale Gegebenheiten (wie z.B. Unterschiede in den Bereichen des Rechts- und Erziehungssystems) auf der einen Seite und Festhalten an der Durchgängigkeit der Bedeutung über alle Sprachen und Kulturen hinweg. Wie auch Magda Heiner-Freiling in ihrem Vortrag hinwies, hat sich die amerikanisch geprägte DDC im Zuge der Übersetzungsprojekte zwar schrittweise den Bedürfnissen der Benutzer in anderen Erdteilen geöffnet, dennoch bestehen noch zahlreiche Schwierigkeiten. Das von Heiner-Freiling erwähnte Beispiel der Pädagogik zeigte aber auch, dass Vorsicht bei Alleingängen auf nationaler Ebene geboten ist, da z.B. im Zuge des Bologna-Prozesses auch in Europa amerikanische institutionelle Strukturen und Terminologie im Bildungswesen Einzug halten. Weitere Vorträge befassten sich mit der Arbeit an elektronischen Verfahren zur automatischen Analyse von DDC-Notationen (Ulrike Reiner aus Göttingen), mit der DDC-Übersetzungs-Software, die für die Übersetzung ins Deutsche entwickelt wurde und nun auch in allen anderen Sprachen im Einsatz ist (Peter Werling, Fa. Pansoft) bzw. mit der DDC-Suche in verschiedenen Webportalen (Lars G. Svensson, DNB). Der abschließende Vortrag von Magda Heiner-Freiling (DNB) ging dann wieder ins Programmatische mit dem Vorschlag, eine gemeinsame European DDC Users Group (EDUG) zu gründen, um gemeinsame Anliegen der europäischen Dewey-User, was z.B. die anfangs erwähnten Probleme in einzelnen Bereichen betrifft, gemeinsam gegenüber den amerikanischen Herausgebern zu vertreten, um so mehr Einfluss auf die künftige Entwicklung der DDC zu haben.
    Wer sich näher für einzelne Themen interessiert, hat die Möglichkeit, auf der Homepage der Schweizer Nationalbibliothek die Präsentationsunterlagen der einzelnen Vorträge einzusehen (http://www.nb.admin.ch/slb/slb_professionnel/projektarbeit/00729/01615/01675/index.html?lang=de). Ziel des zweiten Tages war die Gründung einer europäischen DDC-Anwendergruppe zum Zweck der Vernetzung und Planung für die gemeinsame Entwicklungsarbeit. Anwesend waren Vertreterinnen der Nationalbibliotheken von Großbritannien, Deutschland, Frankreich, Schweden, Norwegen, Italien, Schweiz und Österreich sowie eine Vertreterin von OCLC. Eingeladen hatten die Nationalbibliotheken von Deutschland und der Schweiz. Vormittags wurde eine allgemeine Diskussion über die Ziele und Möglichkeiten einer solchen Anwendergruppe sowie allgemein über die Vorteile einer DDC-Anwendung in Europa diskutiert. Ziele von EDUG könnten sein: - Monitoring der europäischen DDC-Anwendungen - Kenntnis der unterschiedlichen Anwendungsregeln in den verschiedenen Ländern - Zugang auch zu den DDC-Übersetzungen in anderen Sprachen samt Expansionen - Zusammenarbeit beim Angebot von "built numbers" Zusammenarbeit mit OCLC als Vertreterin von europäischen Anliegen (die am Vortag ausführlich angesprochen worden waren) - Harmonisierung der Änderungen in den verschiedensprachigen Ausgaben (21./22. Ed., unterschiedliche Erweiterungen, anderer Sprachgebrauch) - Kooperation bei der Realisierung von technischen Plänen wie z.B. die automatische Klassifikation von Online-Dokumenten oder dem Mapping zu anderen Klassifikationssystemen - Weitergabe von Know-how und Erfahrungen an andere Interessierte Spontan wurden drei Arbeitsgruppen ins Leben gerufen, und zwar eine für technische Angelegenheiten und zwei inhaltliche für die kritischen Bereiche Recht und Erziehung. Nachmittags wurden die Satzungen von EDUG diskutiert und überarbeitet. Bei vielen Punkten wurde Übereinkunft erzielt. Einzelne Fragen blieben noch offen und sollen beim nächsten Treffen - wahrscheinlich im April 2008 in Frankfurt - endgültig fixiert werden."

    "Although the Dewey Decimal Classification is currently available on the web to subscribers as WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey in the OCLC Connexion service and in an XML version to licensees, OCLC does not provide any "web services" based on the DDC. By web services, we mean presentation of the DDC to other machines (not humans) for uses such as searching, browsing, classifying, mapping, harvesting, and alerting. In order to build web-accessible services based on the DDC, several elements have to be considered. One of these elements is the design of an appropriate Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) structure for Dewey. The design goals of mapping the entity model of the DDC into an identifier space can be summarized as follows: * Common locator for Dewey concepts and associated resources for use in web services and web applications * Use-case-driven, but not directly related to and outlasting a specific use case (persistency) * Retraceable path to a concept rather than an abstract identification, reusing a means of identification that is already present in the DDC and available in existing metadata. We have been working closely with our colleagues in the OCLC Office of Research (especially Andy Houghton as well as Eric Childress, Diane Vizine-Goetz, and Stu Weibel) on a preliminary identifier syntax. The basic identifier format we are currently exploring is: http://dewey.info/{aspect}/{object}/{locale}/{type}/{version}/{resource} where * {aspect} is the aspect associated with an {object}-the current value set of aspect contains "concept", "scheme", and "index"; additional ones are under exploration * {object} is a type of {aspect} * {locale} identifies a Dewey translation * {type} identifies a Dewey edition type and contains, at a minimum, the values "edn" for the full edition or "abr" for the abridged edition * {version} identifies a Dewey edition version * {resource} identifies a resource associated with an {object} in the context of {locale}, {type}, and {version}
    Some examples of identifiers for concepts follow: <http://dewey.info/concept/338.4/en/edn/22/> This identifier is used to retrieve or identify the 338.4 concept in the English-language version of Edition 22. <http://dewey.info/concept/338.4/de/edn/22/> This identifier is used to retrieve or identify the 338.4 concept in the German-language version of Edition 22. <http://dewey.info/concept/333.7-333.9/> This identifier is used to retrieve or identify the 333.7-333.9 concept across all editions and language versions. <http://dewey.info/concept/333.7-333.9/about.skos> This identifier is used to retrieve a SKOS representation of the 333.7-333.9 concept (using the "resource" element). There are several open issues at this preliminary stage of development: Use cases: URIs need to represent the range of statements or questions that could be submitted to a Dewey web service. Therefore, it seems that some general questions have to be answered first: What information does an agent have when coming to a Dewey web service? What kind of questions will such an agent ask? Placement of the {locale} component: It is still an open question if the {locale} component should be placed after the {version} component instead (<http://dewey.info/concept/338.4/edn/22/en>) to emphasize that the most important instantiation of a Dewey class is its edition, not its language version. From a services point of view, however, it could make more sense to keep the current arrangement, because users are more likely to come to the service with a present understanding of the language version they are seeking without knowing the specifics of a certain edition in which they are trying to find topics. Identification of other Dewey entities: The goal is to create a locator that does not answer all, but a lot of questions that could be asked about the DDC. Which entities are missing but should be surfaced for services or user agents? How will those services or agents interact with them? Should some entities be rendered in a different way as presented? For example, (how) should the DDC Summaries be retrievable? Would it be necessary to make the DDC Manual accessible through this identifier structure?"

    Dem Grundsatzreferat folgte ein Sachstandsbericht: Stefan Wolf (BSZ Konstanz) sprach über "Neues zur Sacherschließung im Südwestverbund". Er erinnerte an die Übernahme der Sacherschließungsdaten aus dem Bibliotheksverbund Bayern 2003, an die Übernahme von DDC-Notationen aus dem Gemeinsamen Bibliotheksverbund 2004 und an den Beginn der Arbeit an der RVK-Normdatei im Jahr 2005. Aus der Fülle von angebotenem Material sei hier darauf verwiesen, dass der Südwestverbund inzwischen 25 Prozent seines Bestandes mit Schlagwörtern gemäß RSWK und Schlagwortnormdatei sowie 22 Prozent seines Bestandes mit Notationen gemäß RVK, aber auch DDC bzw. LCC erschlossen hat. Seit Dezember 2005 ist dominierendes Arbeitsthema die Migration zu PICA. Danach berichtete Dipl.-Math. Andreas Neumann (Karlsruhe) über RecommenderSysteme auf dem Hintergrund der Arbeit an der UB Karlsruhe. So konnte u.a. dank des Einsatzes dieser Expertensysteme festgestellt werden, dass 8o Prozent der Anfragen auf 14 Prozent des Bestandes gerichtet sind. Ein weiterer Arbeitsbericht wurde von Wladimir Rudyuk (Kiew) vorgelegt: Kriterien des Klassifizierens auf Dokumentebene im elektronischen Rechtsverkehr. Hier wurde die Brücke zur Erschließung in Archiven geschlagen und festgestellt, dass angesichts der vorhandenen Fülle von Einzellösungen erst noch Kriterien für institutionenübergreifende Klassifizierung zu erarbeiten sind. Der folgende Vortrag "Bibliometrische Anwendungen. Beispiel: Datenbankvergleiche" von Dirk Tunger (Jülich) erwies an einer Menge von Material die Bedeutung bibliometrischer Arbeit. Verglichen wurden dabei SCI und SCOPUS, wobei sich unterschiedliche Akzentsetzungen in der Erschließung und Unterschiede im Datenmaterial zeigten. Hervorstechendes Ergebnis der Untersuchung ist, dass die Bibliometrie nicht zur Qualitätsmessung geeignet ist, sondern zur Wahrnehmung von Publikationen. Dr. Hans-J. Hermes sprach danach über: Auch ein Job des Fachreferenten: ,,Titelfrüherkennung" - kann Klassifikation dabei helfen? Hier wurden am Beispiel der Recherche von Titeln mit dem "Publikationsjahr" 2007 (und folgende!) die Grenzen der Erschließung gezeigt.
    Den zweiten Tag der Jahrestagung begann Dr. Bernd Lorenz mit einem kurzen Literaturauswahlbericht. Zunächst gab er zwei allgemeine Hinweise: - Die Briefe zur Klassifikation Nr. 58, Nov. 2005 S. 8 f. enthalten einen Bericht über die AG DK während der GfKl-Tagung Magdeburg 2005. - Gemäß den "Zehn Punkten von Cottbus 2003" wird Frau Dr. Federica Paradisi ein Referat halten über "Applications of the DDC in Italy". Beim Literaturauswahlbericht wurden folgende Titel genannt: - Scott, Mona L.: Dewey Decimal Classification, 22nd edition: a study manual and number building guide (Westport/CT, 2005; XI, 348 S.) besonders S. 7 (offiziöser Text!) [vgl. S. 8: Hier spricht die Autorin sogar vom "wisdom" of the Editorial Policy Committee!!] - Bowman, J.H.: Essential Dewey. (New York, 2005; 150 S.)(kommentierender Text mit Übungen) [gut strukturiert; Basis für ein grundsätzliches Verständnis.] - Heiner-Freiling, Magda; Landry, Patrice: Die Verwendung der Dewey-Dezimalklassifikation (DDC) für die Organisation von Nationalbibliographien: die Schweiz und Deutschland/Österreich (IFLA Oslo, 2005,1.8.2005 (2. Fassung der Übersetzung), 1o S.) [besonders S. 3, 6/8 (DDC Deutsch)] Die knappen Berichte von Anwenderbibliotheken skizzieren einen Gebrauch ohne Kooperation im ohnehin sehr reduzierten Anwenderbereich der UDK in Deutschland. Die ETH Zürich hält ihre UDK-Adaption aktuell und koordiniert in gewisser Weise den Schweizer Anwenderkreis von ca. einem Dutzend kleinerer Bibliotheken. Hingewiesen wurde auf eine kleine Dewey-Ausstellung, die dankenswerterweise durch Hilfe und Initiative von Frau Dr. Margit Sandner (UB Wien) vor dem Besprechungsraum plaziert werden konnte. Sie kann bei Interesse ausgeliehen werden. Die AG DK bestimmte dann nach dem Rücktritt von Frau Rothe (Bibliothek der HTWK Leipzig) im Zusammenhang mit ihrer bevorstehenden Pensionierung, Frau Dr. Monika Lösse (DDB Leipzig) und Herrn Dr. Pika (ETH Zürich) zu neuen stellvertretenden Vorsitzenden.
