    Abstract
    Die Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz wird künftig zu den Kernaufgaben der Bibliotheken gehören müssen. Dies ist auch eines der Hauptarbeitsfelder des Rezensenten, der aus eigener Praxis sieht, welche Schwierigkeiten sich hierbei finden: Viele Klienten erkennen ihren eigenen Informationsbedarf nicht, können ein fachliches nicht von einem informatorischen Problem trennen, sind nicht in der Lage, für ihr spezifisches Problem potenzielle Informationsquellen zu finden und haben vor allem Probleme, die Verbindung zwischen elektronischer und gedruckter WeIt zu schaffen, die somit praktisch unverbunden nebeneinander existieren (vgl. Vortrag, FH Köln, Fakultät für Informations- und Kommunikationswissenschaften, Institut für Informationswissenschaft, am 31. Oktober 2003). Der Brückenschlag zwischen diesen beiden Welten gehört zu den Aufgaben professioneller Informationsvermittler, die nicht nur in der Digitalwelt firm sein müssen, aber auch dort. Nicht zuletzt müssen die gefundenen Informationen ergebnisorientiert genutzt und kritisch bewertet werden und die gefundenen Antworten zur Problemlösung eingesetzt werden. Die Informationslandschaft ist mit ihren verschiedenen Wissensmarktplätzen und Informationsräumen inzwischen so komplex geworden, dass eine kleine Handreichung dazu geeignet erscheint, vor allem die eigene Position des Informationsvermittlers zu überdenken. Zudem ist die aktive Informationsvermittlung noch ein dürres Feld in Deutschland. Die vorliegende kleine Erfahrungsstudie schickt sich an, dies zu ändern. Der Ansatz geht davon aus, dass jeder Vermittler von Medienkompetenz Lehrer wie Lernender zugleich ist; die Anlage ist wie bei allen BibSpider-Publikationen international ausgerichtet. Der Band ist komplett zweisprachig und versammelt Erfahrungsberichte aus der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, den USA und Südafrika, die eher als Ansatz zur Bewusstseinsbildung denn als Arbeitsanleitung gedacht sind. Eingeleitet wird der Band von einer terminologischen Herleitung des Begriffs aus dem Angelsächsischen und den verschiedenen Bedeutungsebenen, die durch unterschiedliche Bildungs- und Informationskulturen bedingt sind. Angerissen werden verschiedene Arbeitsgebiete und -erfahrungen.

    Abstract
    Viele Bibliotheken bieten heute ihre Kataloge und Datenbanken online an, vernachlässigen dabei aber den Bereich Informationsvermittlung.     Abstract
    Die K3-Architektur zur technischen Entwicklung und Realisierung des netzbasierten Wissensmanagement in der Lehre wird dargestellt. Das aktuelle K3-System besteht aus drei zentralen Komponenten; K3Forum (Diskurs), K3Vis (Visualisierung) und K3Wiki (kollaborative Textproduktion, z. B. für Zusammenfassungen). K3 verwendet Open-Source-Software unter der LGPL Lizenz.. Dadurch können freie Verwendung, überschaubare Entwicklungskosten und Nachhaltigkeit garantiert und die Unabhängigkeit von kommerziellen Software-Anbietern gesichert werden. Dank des komponentenbasierten Entwicklungskonzepts kann K3 flexibel und robust laufend weiterentwickelt werden, ohne die Stabilität der bestehenden Funktionalitäten zu beeinträchtigen. Der Artikel dokumentiert exemplarisch die Hauptkomponenten und Funktionen von K3, so dass nachfolgende Entwickler leicht eine Übersicht über das K3-System gewinnen können. Die Anforderungen an den Transfer des Systems in Umgebungen außerhalb von Konstanz werden beschrieben.

    Abstract
    Das Internet mit seinen ständig neuen Usern und seinem extremen Wachstum bringt viele neue Herausforderungen mit sich. Aufgrund dieses Wachstums bedienen sich die meisten Leute der Hilfe von Suchmaschinen um Inhalte innerhalb des Internet zu finden. Suchmaschinen nutzen für die Beantwortung der User-Anfragen Information Retrieval Techniken. Problematisch ist nur, dass traditionelle Information Retrieval (IR) Systeme für eine relativ kleine und zusammenhängende Sammlung von Dokumenten entwickelt wurden. Das Internet hingegen unterliegt einem ständigen Wachstum, schnellen Änderungsraten und es ist über geographisch verteilte Computer verteilt. Aufgrund dieser Tatsachen müssen die alten Techniken erweitert oder sogar neue IRTechniken entwickelt werden. Eine Suchmaschine die diesen Herausforderungen vergleichsweise erfolgreich entgegnet ist Google. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es aufzuzeigen, wie Suchmaschinen funktionieren. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf der Suchmaschine Google. Kapitel 2 wird sich zuerst mit dem Aufbau von Suchmaschinen im Allgemeinen beschäftigen, wodurch ein grundlegendes Verständnis für die einzelnen Komponenten geschaffen werden soll. Im zweiten Teil des Kapitels wird darauf aufbauend ein Überblick über die Architektur von Google gegeben. Kapitel 3 und 4 dienen dazu, näher auf die beiden Komponenten Crawler und Indexer einzugehen, bei denen es sich um zentrale Elemente im Rahmen von Suchmaschinen handelt.

    Abstract
    Informationen werden heute zunächst im Internet gesucht - auch regelmäßige Bibliotheksnutzer machen dies nicht anders. Die Bibliotheken haben sich darauf eingestellt und mit Online-Katalogen, digitalen Bibliotheken, Volltextbanken und der Endnutzer-Fernleihe virtuelle Dependancen im Netz aufgebaut. Diese Angebote werden idealerweise durch einen digitalen Auskunftsdienst ergänzt. Die Internet-Trainerin Anne Lipow sagte schon vor sechs Jahren zutreffend: »It's the librarian's job, to meet the users where they are...« Auch auf zahlreichen deutschsprachigen Bibliothekswebsites gibt es folglich heute individuelle Beratung und Informationsvermittlung in unterschiedlicher Form: als E-MailKontakt, über Webformulare und in den vergangenen Jahren auch vermehrt als Chat.
