    Abstract
    This paper reviews the enormous changes in cataloging and classification reflected in the literature of 2003 and 2004, and discusses major themes and issues. Traditional cataloging and classification tools have been re-vamped and new resources have emerged. Most notable themes are: the continuing influence of the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Control (FRBR); the struggle to understand the ever-broadening concept of an "information entity"; steady developments in metadata-encoding standards; and the globalization of information systems, including multilinguistic challenges.

    Abstract
    This paper presents an approach for integrating multiple sources of semantics for the creating metadata. A new framework is proposed to define topics and themes with both manually and automatically generated terms. The automatically generated terms include: terms from a semantic analysis of the collections and terms from previous user's queries. An interface is developed to facilitate the creation and use of such topics and themes for metadata creation. The framework and the interface promote human-computer collaboration in metadata creation. Several principles underlying such approach are also discussed.

    "Die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) richtet ein zweites "Leistungszentrum für Forschungsinformation" in Oldenburg ein. Das Zentrum am Informatikinstitut OFFIS beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, wie elektronische Lernmaterialien, Musikdateien, Grafiken und andere nicht auf Text basierende elektronisch vorliegende Dokumente in wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken angemessen verarbeitet werden können. Damit sie verfügbar bleiben und nicht "für alle Zeit" verloren gehen, erarbeitete das Oldenburger Informatikinstitut OFFIS zusammen mit den Universitäten Braunschweig und Bonn, der Technischen Informationsbibliothek Hannover und der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek ein Konzept zum Aufbau eines Leistungszentrums für Forschungsinformationen. Der Entwurf wurde im Jahr 2004 der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) vorgestellt. Das mit "Probado" betitelte Konzept überzeugte die DFG, sodass sie dem Konsortium unter der Federführung von OFFIS jetzt den Zuschlag erteilte. Im Leistungszentrum werden innerhalb der nächsten fünf Jahre Werkzeuge und Systeme sowie Verfahren und Abläufe entwickelt, die es wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken erlauben, mit nicht-textuellen Dokumenten genau so selbstverständlich umzugehen wie heute mit Büchern oder Zeitschriften.     Abstract
    Das Internet verändert die Rahmenbedingungen des wissenschaftlichen Publikationswesens einschneidend. Wissenschaftliche Dokumente sind zunehmend elektronisch verfügbar und beginnen, die klassischen Wissenschaftsmedien wie Fachbücher und Fachzeitschriften zu verdrängen. Die Implementierung eines elektronischen Publikationsprozesses ist Voraussetzung für die erfolgreiche Verbreitung wissenschaftlicher Dokumente per Internet. Die Umsetzung setzt jedoch die Einhaltung bestimmter Vorgaben und Regularien voraus, sonst drohen Inkompatibilitäten zwischen den Systemen. Im Kontext von Urheberrechtsnovellierung und Open Access-Bewegung erläutert dieser Beitrag technische und rechtliche Rahmenbedingungen von Online-Publikationen und stellt Projekte und Initiativen vor, die sich auf dem Feld des wissenschaftlichen Publikationswesens betätigen. Ausführlich wurden Problembereiche des aktuellen Publikationsprozesses von Abschlussarbeiten im Studiengang Internationales Informationsmanagement an der Universität Hildesheim mit Hilfe von Interviews untersucht. Auf Grundlage der Zustandsanalyse wurde anschließend der elekronische Publikationsprozess modelliert.

    "Seit 1997 wird an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin ein Dokumentenserver für die Publikation wissenschaftlicher Arbeiten betrieben: http://edoc.huberlin.de. Grundlegende Entwicklungsarbeiten wurden durch das HSP III-Projekt "Digitale Dissertationen" in enger Kooperation mit dem DFG-Projekt "Dissertationen Online" geleistet. Dabei wurden alle Voraussetzungen geschaffen, die für ein gesichertes Publikationsverfahren erforderlich sind, wie die Bereitstellung von Formatvorlagen und Anleitungen für die Autoren, die Konvertierung der Dokumente in ein auf SGML basierendes Dateiformat zum Zweck der Langzeitarchivierung und strukturierten Recherchierbarkeit, die Sicherung der Authentizität und Integrität der Dokumente durch die Vergabe elektronischer Signaturen und Zeitstempel, die Etablierung eines Workflows für alle am Publikationsprozess beteiligten Mitarbeiter. Nach der Beendigung des Projektes "Digitale Dissertationen" wird der Betrieb des Dokumentenservers seit Anfang 2001 als festes, gemeinsames Angebot von Rechenzentrum und Universitätsbibliothek der Humboldt-Universität fortgeführt, wobei die Betreuung nunmehr durch Stammpersonal beider Einrichtungen erfolgt. Das Angebot wird trotz der an die Autoren gestellten hohen Anforderungen - die Verwendung vorgegebener Formatvorlagen und die strukturierte Aufbereitung der Arbeiten sind zwingend vorgeschrieben - von den Promovenden gut angenommen: Von ca. 400 pro Jahr an der HumboldtUniversität geschriebenen Dissertationen wird etwa ein Viertel über den Dokumentenserver elektronisch publiziert. Die Autoren erhalten eine intensive und qualifizierte Unterstützung, welche von der Bereitstellung von Informationsmaterial über Kurse zur Verwendung einer Word-Dokumentvorlage, telefonischem und E-Mail-Support bis zur persönlichen Beratung vor Ort reicht. Konzentrierte sich die Publikation bisher im Wesentlichen auf Dissertationen und Habilitationsschriften, so soll diese gemäß den auf der Abschlusstagung des Projektes "Dissertationen Online" gegebenen Empfehlungen in Zukunft verstärkt auf weitere wissenschaftliche Arbeiten ausgedehnt werden."

KM is still an operational discipline that has yet to have an academic foundation. Its core has yet to solidify and concepts and practices remain fluid, making it difficult to discuss or even to identify the range of relevant elements. Being aware of this lack of a well-structured retrievable disciplinary literature, the editors made a practice of attending trade shows and conferences attended by KM professionals to look for presentations that would in some way expand knowledge of the field. They asked presenters to turn their paper into a book chapter, which is the major source of the material in this book. Although this is a somewhat chancy method of identifying authors and topics, several of the papers are excellent and a number add to an understanding of KM. Because of the fluidity of the area of study, the editors devised a three-dimensional topic expansion approach to the content so that the reader can follow themes in the papers that would not have been easy to do if one relied solely on the table of contents. The table of contents organizes the presentations into eight subject sections, each section with a foreword that introduces the topic and indicates briefly the contribution of each chapter to the overall section title. Following this, the Roadmap lists 18 topics or themes that appear in the book and relevant chapters where information on the theme can be found.
