    Abstract
Examines the use of networked information sources in scholarly communication. Networked information sources are defined broadly to cover: documents and images stored on electronic network hosts; data files; newsgroups; listservs; online information services and electronic periodicals. Reports results of a survey to determine how heavily, if at all, networked information sources are cited in scholarly printed periodicals published in 1993 and 1994. 27 printed periodicals, representing a wide range of subjects and the most influential periodicals in their fields, were identified through the Science Citation Index and Social Science Citation Index Journal Citation Reports. 97 articles were selected for further review and references, footnotes and bibliographies were checked for references to networked information sources. Only 2 articles were found to contain such references. Concludes that, although networked information sources facilitate scholars' work to a great extent during the research process, scholars have yet to incorporate such sources in the bibliographies of their published articles

    Abstract
A Serials Task Force at the University of California, USA, is currently working on merging the MELVYL catalogue and periodicals database. Details its design principles and discusses the major design issues of: name authority control, subject authority files, subsets, long searches, consolidation, sorting, and creation of possible new indexes for keywords, notes, titles, conferences, call numbers, combine author/titles, music, geospatial searching, and form limits

    Abstract
Libraries can add value to Internet resources by adding them to the library's catalogue in a manner consistent with the other resources held within the collection. Reports on OCLC studies into cataloguing Internet resources and accessing electronic periodicals. Existing retrieval methods on the Internet are limited because of shallow directory structures and idiosyncratic naming conventions. Catalogue entries for electronic resources need to provide a complete description of the access methodology if they are to satisfactorily connect remote users without the immediate possibility of backup from reference staff

    Abstract
Reference librarians, who are thoroughly familiar with the purpose, scope and arrangement of abstract periodicals, are uniquely qualified for the task of writing abstracts. The procedures described here offer a relatively simple way for them to write acceptable abstracts from the outset. Although research is being conducted in the area of machine generated abstracts, there wll continue to be a role for human abstractors.

    Abstract
Since its introduction as a library resource in 1984, the use of CD-ROM technology has proliferated among a multitude of vendors. In 1987, Ulrich's, a major supplier of serials information, jumped on the bandwagon when the entire data bases of Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory and Ulrich's Irregular Serials and Annuals become available on CD-ROM as Ulrich's Plus. The next year, Ebsco introduced The Serials Directory in CD-ROM version. Examines and compares these data base systems as reference tools.

    Abstract
The article discusses the construction of a controlled vocabulary for the indexing of petroleum and gas related articles in indigenous periodicals and newspapers in the library system of the Nigerian National Corporation (NNPC). The major problems encountered in the design of the subject heading list are highlighted and solutions offered. Attention is also drawn to neologisms as they apply to the controlled vocabulary under consideration.

    Abstract
Assesses scholarly network periodicals from the reader's point of view. Reviews 7 subscription periodicals that are published primarily on the Internet with particular reference to: the nature of their contents, format, and policies. The review forms the basis of an assessment of the ease of use and usefulness of current network periodicals. While network periodicals present a number of problems, they have also begun to include features which offer readers an advantage over printed periodicals. Concludes with a brief discussion of requirements for future scholarly network periodicals

    Abstract
Reports results of a bibliometric study of the literature of Qigong: a relaxation technique used to teach patients to control their heart rate, blood pressure, temperature and other involuntary functions through controlles breathing. All articles indexed in the MEDLINE CD-ROM database, between 1965 and 1995 were identified using 'breathing exercises' MeSH term. The articles were analyzed for geographical and language distribution and a ranking exercise enabled a core list of periodicals to be identified. In addition, the study shed light on the changing frequency of the MeSH terms and evaluated the research areas by measuring the information from these respective MeSH headings

    Abstract
Discusses the current state of the WWW as a useful tool for researchers in relation to the virtual library. Products such as IAC, EBSCO and UMI offer access using a client-server model and Internet data communications to remote full text databases of sufficient size and sscope to be useful to serious researchers. Reviews the client software for Windows to ProQuest Direct from UMI. UMI has a content base of over 17.000 periodicals, 7.000 newspapers, and 1,4 million dissertations. On 17 Oct 96 UMI introduced access to its servers through the WWW, and an update to its ProQuest Direct Windows client. Remote access includes Z39.50 and LYNX browsers. Covers operating environment; user interface; searching; retrieving documents; and documentation and help
