    Abstract
Provides practical advice and guidance to subject librarians in UK academic libraries preparing for teaching quality assessment (TQA) visits. Suggests what action librarians should take prior to an assessment visit, including forms of departmental liaison. Provides a comprehensive checklist, arranged into six broad categories, of those issues which can be raised by assessors. Describes the author's recent experiences of TQA for science and engineering subjects at the University of Edinburgh. Indicates what action should be taken after the assessment visit.

    Abstract
Describes the change in the perception of the ADONIS project 14 years after its introduction. Outlines the original mission to use new technology to provide copies of copyright articles more effiently, and to take net efficiency gain as a usage of copyright fee. Details the present ADONIS service - its mission is the same although the manner of achieving it has changed - providing a history of the last 10 years; lists recent developments, planned developments and highlights the main problems of ADONIS to be pricing

    Abstract
The British Library have conformed their decision to go ahead with the harmonization programme between the US and UKMARC formats, and although the final date for the changeover is still not yet, they expect the whole process to be over in 2 years, with one further year after that when they will support UKMARC. Describes the progress made so far, and problems that remain to be solved

    Abstract
Report of a survey 96 (out of 119) US and Canadian member libraries of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) to determine their use of on-line and CD-ROM data bases, including OPACs. 4 catalogues were identified: on-line mediated searching (97%); CD-ROMs (96%); end-user on-line searching (45%); and locally mounted magnetic tapes (37,5%). The latter option is expected to be the most widely used option in the new future. Although CD-ROM caused some migration from on-line, most migration was from printed sources to CD-ROM. Tables show: on-line hosts most used for intermediary on-line searching; on-line data bases most after searched by intermediaries; end user on-line systems offered by most libraries; the 20 most popular CD-ROM data bases; and the 8 magnetic tape data bases accessible on OPACs

    Abstract
The age distribution of a country's scientists is an important element in the study of its research capacity. In this article we investigate the age distribution of Japanese scientists in order to find out whether major events such as World War II had an appreciable effect on its features. Data have been obtained from population censuses taken in Japan from 1970 to 1995. A comparison with the situation in China and the United States has been made. We find that the group of scientific researchers outside academia is dominated by the young: those younger than age 35. The personnel group in higher education, on the other hand, is dominated by the baby boomers: those who were born after World War II. Contrary to the Chinese situation we could not find any influence of major nondemographic events. The only influence we found was the increase in enrollment of university students after World War II caused by the reform of the Japanese university system. Female participation in the scientific and university systems in Japan, though still low, is increasing.
