    Abstract
Proposes a new experimental methodology for evaluating the results of library research from the user's viewpoint. Illustrates the theory by comparing the efficacy of information retrieved from 2 document catalogues, identical except that one is alphabetical and the other numerical/verbal. The methodology utilises the concept of 3 dependent variables: 'promising references retrieved' by the researcher; 'documents read'; and 'documents cited'. Claims that the retrieval effectiveness of the techniques outlined compares favourably with that of W.S. Cooper's methodology

    Abstract
This book seeks to complement two major works on the subject published in the U.S.A.by devoting it self tochronological book numbers. It is mostly an ignored rival line to alphabetical book numbers, indeed an ignored subject. The first four chapters dwell on the theoretical and general problems of book numbers, indeed an ignored subject. the first four chapters dwell on the tehoretical and general problem of book numbers: their definition, nature , usefulness and history. The chapter on the debate over the usefulness of book numbers tries to give the readersa taste of the debate that followed their conceptionand immediate development. Chapter four catalogues advantages of chronological book numbers. The remaining four chapters dwell upon the four specific chronollgical book numbering system. The desription of each system is prefaced by a brief life sketch of the inventor. Ranganathan's system has been fully but concsely explained. The other systems are by W.S.Biscoe, J. D. Brown, Fremont Rider and W.S. Rider and W.S. Merrill. There are twoappendices: one onthe chronology of book numbers (1873-1992), and another an almost exhaustive bibliography on the subject. Its aim is to invite the attention of scholars to a neglected part of our heritage.

    Abstract
W.S. Cooper's utility theory was used to evaluate end user and mediated searching of online and CD-ROM databases. The searches were conducted by 510 end users, using MEDLINE. The relevance of the references and the usefulness of the documents retrieved were examnied. The study also assessed the perceived value to end users of the information retrieved. Mediated online searching cost 3 times as much as end user CD-ROM searching, but was only about twice as effective in terms of user satisfaction; user convenience should be a high priority for the information provider and mediated CD-ROM searching may be the best compromise currently available as regards cost effectiveness and successful information retrieval for end users

    Abstract
Describes S.R. Ranganathan's contribution to library and information science in general, mentioning his library education at London and influence of W.C. Berwick Sayers. Describes the seeds of Colon Classification, ed.1 (CC-1) and discusses the salient features of the scheme. Brings out the indebtedness of Ranganathan to Melvil Dewey and describes the influence of UDC on CC-1. Discusses the growth and development of the concept of 'categories', mentioning the influence of W. Hulme, W.S. Biscoe and others. Concludes that Ranganathan possessed an amazing degree of ingenuity to apply established ideas in such a way in a distinctive and original way
