Seine Farbe, Gestalt, Größe ist offenbar." So sinnlieh, so konkret hat René Descartes vor 360 Jahren in den Meditationen (1641) nachgedacht, als Naturwissenschaften und Philosophie noch nicht getrennt waren. Es geht hier um die Frage, was wohl einen Körper ausmacht. Die kleine Pointe ist natürlich, dass sich der "Körper" Wachs verändert, wenn er in die Nähe einer Flamme kommt. Die Forscher von Renaissance bis Barock haben oft diesen sinnlichen Reiz, sie bereiten ihre Wahrnehmungen nachvollziehbar auf, wir erleben all die Galilei, Spinoza, Pascal, wie sie mit ihren Messanordnungen, Kugelwürfen, Quecksilberröhreben, selbstgeschliffenen Linsen herumtanzen, auf Türme und Berge steigen, aufgeregt ein neues und grundsätzlicheres Gesetz nach dem andern zutage fördernd.
