    Abstract
This book emerged from a semester-long faculty research study seminar at the University of California Humanities Research Institute and from a parallel, co-taught student seminar in the Science Studies Program at the University of California, San Diego. It is a graceful collage of essays, newspaper and magazine clippings, and other odds and ends all dealing with the question: "How have people dealt, in ordinary ways, with these millions of interlocking standards?"
