    Abstract
    Describes an approach to the design and implementation of an information retrieval system capable of providing an optimal search for each individual user. On the basis of the properties of information need, analyzes the pecularities of optimal searching in documentary information retrieval systems. Considers the problems arising from implementing optimal searching and proposes concrete solutions to some of these problems. Describes a simple and convenient methods of selecting the 'best result' and proposes an algorithm for organizing optimal searching for selective dissemination of information (SDI). This algorithm can be used, without substantial modification, in many systems capable of using different searching methods

    Shows how to automatically construct a classification of users and a clustering of documents on the basis of users' information needs by creating clusters of documents and cross-references among clusters using users' search requests. Examines feedback in the construction of this classification and clustering so that the classification can be changed over time to reflect the changing needs of the users

    Abstract
    Satisfaction of information need (IN) through the use of information retrieval systems can be improved by more fully taking into account its characteristics when developing information retrieval systems. Investigates the characteristics of IN. Proposes a new instrument in IR systems which takes an example, demonstrates how to take this component into account in the process of IR system functioning by using a list of tasks and requirements. Discusses poissible solutions to problems that arise during the implementation of this list

    The emergence of information retrieval systems as a means of satisfying information needs has resulted in a large number of theoretical and practical ideas being introduced. These advancements provide the foundation for the theory of IR systems detailed in this book.
