    Abstract
Homonymy is known to often cause false drops in free text searching in a full text database. The problem is quite common and difficult to avoid in Finnish, but nobody has examined it before. Reports on a study that examined the frequency of, and solutions to, the homonymy problem, based on searches made in a Finnish full text database containing about 55.000 newspaper articles. The results indicate that homonymy is not a very serious problem in full text searching, with only about 1 search result set out of 4 containing false drops caused by homonymy. Several other reasons for nonrelevance were much more common. However, in some set results there were a considerable number of homonymy errors, so the number seems to be very random. A study was also made into whether homonyms can be disambiguated by syntactic analysis. The result was that 75,2% of homonyms were disambiguated by this method. Verb homonyms were considerably easier to disambiguate than substantives. Although homonymy is not a very big problem it could perhaps easily be eliminated if there was a suitable syntactic analyzer in the IR system

    Abstract
Presents a critical review of the sense making theory of Brenda Dervin, an important contribution to the theory building in information studies. Special attention is given to the use of the sense making theory in empirical research. Claims that the difficulties faced in data collection and analysis when applying sense making as a methodology are dur to the fact that the conceptual apparatus developed by Dervin has not yet been sufficiently elaborated. Dervin, along with many other theorizers of information seeking and use, is also criticized for ignoring the social nature and context of knowledge and thought. The construction of meaning, and thinking in general, it not only a subjective process but it also involves socially shared representations and ideas

    Abstract
Discusses a new model of search term selection and its implications. The model characterizes the selection of search terms as the navigation of multiple discourses, including controlled vocabularies, documents and their domains, the practice of indexing, clients' speech and search requests, databases and the searcher's own knowledge of the search process. Suggests that the multiple aspects of these discourses influences search term selection. The discourse of a controlled vocabulary is analyzed from various aspects and described as an example of a discourse. Professional searchers and the end users may benefit from adopting this new model of search term selection, learning to see alternative, effective search terms in addition to the words they would normally use. The model can also be incorporated in human computer interfaces of information retrieval systems to support the selection of search terms in a passive or active manner

    Abstract
The survey took place in the year of 1990. 16 librarians and information scientists took part from 10 different departments of Oulu University Library. 581 titles were tested, 70% in English and the rest in Swedish, German and Finnish. The reason for the survey was to find out whether it would be worth using a Finnish indexing system alongside UDC. As an average it takes 6 minutes to familiarize with an item and another 6 minutes to classify and catalogue it. The results are compared with other similar projects in Finland and abroad

    Abstract
The contemporary user centred research paradigm in the study of information needs, seeking, and use is critically evaluated with regard to its ideological presuppositions. Discussed Carol C. Kuhlthau's theory of information seeking as an example of a research approach that seems to ignore its ideological nature. In Kuhlthau's theory, the actor is discursively constituted according to subject-object dualisms prevailing in modernity's conception of human identity. This conception draws sharp distinctions between the categories of mind-body and individual-society and has been heavily criticized. Claims that the discourse used by Kuhlthau is closely connected to the interests of the library professionals trying to improve their social status in contemporary Western society. Considers some ways to overcome the methodological individualism characterizing contemporary user centred research
