    Abstract
    Verstautes Wissen: Mit der Encarta 2007 hat Microsoft ein echtes Problem. Das Lexikon tut sich schwer gegen das kostenlose Online-Sammelwerk Wikipedia, das permanent erweitert wird. Doch Microsoft wird mit seinen Online-Updates wenigstens in der Aktualität mithalten können? Falsch gedacht. Einige der über 50.000 Beiträge gehören gründlich überarbeitet. So werden Sie die 2005 fertiggestellte Frauenkirche im Stadtpanorama von Dresden vergeblich suchen. Fast schon peinlich: Der Artikel über Mikroprozessoren spricht von handelsüblichen CPUs zwischen 500 und 800 MHz -nach "Core2Duo" brauchen Sie da gar nicht erst zu fragen. Auch die Vernetzung der Beiträge ist mager: Es gibt zwar einen Eintrag über Nationalökonomie, der wird jedoch -nicht in verwandten Themen. wie "Adam Smith" verlinkt. Wenigstens sieht die neue und doch veraltete Encarta besser aus: Microsoft hat die Startseite gründlich überarbeitet - und den Kategorienbaum abgespeckt. Für mehr Komfort sorgt eine intelligente Suche, welche die relevantesten Beiträge zum gesuchten: Thema ganz oben gruppiert. Interaktive Landkarten, 3D-Reisen und Videos des Discovery-Channel stellen mittlerweile den eigentlichen Mehrwert der Encarta dar. Fazit: Die Encarta bietet zwar viel Multimedia, aber einige Beiträge sollte Microsoft endlich mal überarbeiten.

    "Für die "Brockhaus Enzyklopädie digital", zu der das Fraunhofer-Institut IPSI in Darmstadt wesentliche technologische Beiträge geleistet hat, erhielt der Verlag Bibliographisches Institut & F.A. Brockhaus AG (Mannheim) am 21. Mai den AKEP Award 2006. Damit zeichnet der Arbeitskreis Elektronisches Publizieren (AKEP) des VerlegerAusschusses im Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels die innovativsten elektronischen Entwicklungen in Verlagen aus. "Die 'Brockhaus Enzyklopaedie digital' hebt sich von den anderen nominierten Produkten wesentlich ab und bietet durch das Zusammenspiel unterschiedlicher Informationen neue Perspektiven auf die Welt und das Wissen", begründete Arnoud de Kemp, Jury-Sprecher und Sprecher des AKEP, die Entscheidung. Das Nachschlagewerk übertreffe alle bisher erhältlichen CD-ROM- und DVD-Enzyklopädien an Umfang und Funktionalitäten. Besonders beeindruckt hat die Jury die unterschiedlichen Möglichkeiten, wie man nach Wissen suchen kann. So reagiert die Suchmaschine auf die Eingabe komplexer Fragesätze (natürlichsprachliche Suchhilfe) und stellt im dreidimensionalen Wissensraum assoziative Zusammenhänge dar. Zudem haben etliche Objekte in diesem 3D-Wissensraum ein Kontextmenü, das sie mit gleichartigen, über- oder untergeordneten anderen Objekten in Beziehung setzt. Weit über die bisher bekannten Möglichkeiten digitaler Nachschlagewerke hinaus geht nach Ansicht der Jury auch die Verknüpfung von Artikeln mit multimedialen Elementen. Die Aufgabe des Fraunhofer IPSI in diesem Projekt war es, eine Taxonomie der Lexikoneinträge zu erstellen, die die Wissensvernetzung ermöglicht. Die "Brockhaus Enzyklopädie digital" besteht aus einem USB-Stick, der alle Texte der 30-bändigen gedruckten Enzyklopädie und die notwendige Software mit allen Suchtechnologien enthält.     "Der britische Staatsmann Francis Bacon hat es der Menschheit gesagt: "Wissen ist Macht". Sein Slogan hat bis dato nichts von seiner Aktualität verloren. Ganz im Gegenteil. Informationen über historische Ereignisse, wissenschaftliche Phänomene und berühmte Menschen stehen mehr denn je hoch im Kurs. Doch wer heutzutage Inhalte nachschlägt, geht ins Internet und klickt sich im Wikipedia-Portal von A bis Z. Auf diese Entwicklung reagiert die Konkurrenz mit neuen Offline-Enzyklopädien. Den größten Schritt geht Brockhaus: Parallel zur 21. Auflage der hauseigenen Enzyklopädie erscheint eine digitale Variante, die aus zwei DVD-ROMs und - das ist neu - einem USB-Memory-Stick mit Docking-Station besteht. Auf dem tragbaren Medium, das etwa das Format einer Streichholzschachtel hat, befindet sich die komplette Textsubstanz der 30 Printbände, so dass bei reiner Nutzung des schicken Datenträgers keine Installation auf der Festplatte erforderlich ist. Denn die Anwendung auf dem Stick enthält bereits die Oberfläche, die auch nach der Installation der DVDs benutzt wird. So werden die multimedialen Features einfach miteingegliedert. Im Vergleich zum ohnehin schon lobenswert bedienbaren "Brockhaus multimedial" bietet die "Enzyklopädie digital" das bekannte Wissensnetz nicht in 2D, sondern in 3D. Beim Nachschlagen erlebt der Benutzer noch etwas Einfallsreiches: Dank einer natürlich-sprachlichen Suchhilfe gelangt er etwa mit der Frage "Welches Tier hat zwei Höcker" zum gewünschten Ergebnis. Derartige Entwicklungen haben aber auch ihren Preis: Satte 1499 Euro kostet der Spaß. Wem das zu teuer ist, der erhält mit dem "Brockhaus multimedial 2006" in der Premium-Version für rund 100 Euro 255 000 Artikel zu allen nur erdenklichen Themen, die mit einer konfigurierbaren Suchfunktion auf den Bildschirm geholt und auf Wunsch direkt ausgedruckt werden. Wer die Editionen der vergangenen Jahre kennt, wird viele Ähnlichkeiten feststellen. Es sind aber auch Neuerungen hinzugekommen. So gibt es jetzt beispielsweise erstmals einen Kulturführer, der bedeutende Filme, Bücher, Opern und Theaterstücke jeweils in einer Top-50-Liste darstellt. Hinzu kommt diesmal auch ein Kinder- und Jugendlexikon, denn im Bildungsbereich spielt der Mannheimer Verlag eine wichtige Rolle. Rein auf die Entwicklung bezogen, ist diese Erweiterung in Richtung Schulalltag allerdings nichts anderes als eine direkte Reaktion auf Microsofts "Encarta". Das Nachschlagewerk von Bill Gates' Unternehmen hat nämlich schon vergangenes Jahr eine Kids-Sektion in seine Enzyklopädie integriert - und diese Aufgabe auch besser gelöst.

    Das Multimedia-Lexikon in Version 2004 bietet keine grundlegenden Neuerungen. Neben dem Lexikonteil mit 117.000 Stichwörtern gehören ein Atlas, eine Zeitleiste, Themenreisen, Wörterbücher für Englisch, Französisch, Spanisch und Italienisch sowie das Wahrig-Fremdwörterbuch zur Ausstattung. Für multimedialen Pepp sorgen 16.000 Medienelemente wie Diashows, Videos, Tondokumente und Animationen. Auf dem neuesten Stand bleibt das Lexikon dank monatlicher Online-Updates. Das Lexikon lässt sich nichtvollständig auf Festplatte kopieren, die DVD muss für das Nachladen der Multimedia-Dateien während der Benutzung eingelegt bleiben. Das Nachschlagewerk lässt sich intuitiv bedienen, die meist knappen Lexikon-Texte werden durch Multimedia-Elemente und Internet-Links ergänzt. Der Atlas bietet keine 3D-Globus-Ansicht und umfasst nur zwei Einstellungen: "Länder" für geografische Karten und "Sehenswürdigkeiten" für eine Übersicht über "Metropolen", "Kultstätten" und "Naturlandschaften". Spezielle Themenkarten etwa für Klima, Niederschlag, Zeitzonen oder eine Mondkarte fehlen.

    "Die Bitmanagement Software GmbH und der Medienkonzern Bertelsmann treten mit ihrem gemeinsamen Angebot, dem 3D Globus, gegen Google Earth an, wobei sie mit wesentlich niedrigeren Investitionen und besseren Diensten punkten wollen. Aus 160 Gigabyte Satelliten- und Kartendaten mit unterschiedliche Auflösungen entstand ein voll integriertes DVD-Konsumprodukt mit 3D Graphical User Interface (GUI). Die 3D-Technologie basiert auf den 3D-ISO-Standard VRML/ X3D, dem weltweit meist verbreiteten Standard. Für sein Globusprojekt hatte die Bertelsmann-Tochter "WissenMedia-Verlag GmbH", München, den 3D-Software-Hersteller "Bitmanagement Software GmbH", Berg, beauftragt, einen Weltatlas in Globusform zu entwickeln. Dieser Globus sollte interaktiv, - mit Überflugfunktion in Echtzeit -, 3D-animiert und einfach zu bedienen sein. Die Anwendung wird auch im Internet genutzt werden können und mit einem One-Click-Start besonders einfach zu bedienen sein. Der Globus als Teil des voll integrierten Wissensprojektes ist mittlerweile als exklusives Produkt auf dem Markt. Damit hat sich auch die Software von Bitmanagement bewährt, die Erwartungen des Auftraggebers wurden sogar übertroffen. Die Visualisierungs-Technologie BS Contact Geo Software von Bitmanagement ermöglicht das Interagieren und ist auch auf - im Konsumentenbereich verbreiteten - Windows PCs und Laptops aller Leistungsstufen einsetzbar. Die Software basiert auf dem 3D ISO Standard VRML /X3D, der sich bereits bei den Programmierern etabliert hat und für die Nutzung im Internet konzipiert ist. Die Zahl der VRML/X3D Anwendungen im Internet hat sich in den vergangenen zwei Jahren verzehnfacht.
