Abstract

First in a series of articles on archival description. Describes the experience of French archives in the creation of thesauri with special emphasis on the following: the context within which French expertise in the description and analysis of archival documents was developed; the 3 principle thesauri currently used in French archives for the description of public administration documents, Vocabulaire de Varenne, Thesaurus W, and Priam 3; and some considerations for archivists in Quebec
